Watched this video, remembered I had an old band brake in the garage, plugged in my welder and finally made a brake for my mini bike. Thanks! ha. Only bad part is rolling backwards, it likes to grab (possibly because of the direction of wear on the go-kart it was previously used on, because the band would only work good for me placed a certain way). I actually welded a post to the frame instead of mounting a bracket / post to the motor. Silly me wasn't thinking of chain tensioning at the time... oops. Well it works though! little jittery as all band brakes are, going to add a spring tomorrow to keep it more stable during a free roll / coast.
Best video I have found searching on youtube I'm in the middle of restoring a go kart that needs brakes and has the drum on it for band brakes and now I have a basic understanding of how to fix them thanks!
Thank you for posting this video. I just bought a 1968 Cushman Minute Miser 3-wheeler and the original break system is shot. I found the clutch break system on-line but just wanted to see if anyone had a video on how to install it. Thanks again.
Good video going to get a set of band brakes for my off road lawn mower. And I remembered seeing this video awhile back. Y'all do some really good work on whatever you work on. So thanks all your video's keep them coming. hopefully next week I'll get it done. I think it will work real good about 20 times more brake surface then the little stock disk brake pad's. Their just not make for off road and mud riding.
I was thinking that maybe you should flip the band so as the clutch is spinning and the band clamps it would be pulling at the bolt instead of pushing. the brake may work better if it was working with the rotation instead of against it. like self actuating drum brakes on a car.
I've tried it both ways on other Bikes and it works equally well both ways!! I like this set up better because the cable set up is more direct and cleaner looking!!☺
Picking up a used mini bike tomorrow, I think I'm going to follow your setup. Q- when tightening/adjusting the cable, does it hold the band in place so it won't drag on the drum?
Sweet!, That's a nice fab job brother. Love that lime green, for a 70's (or 80's) minibike it's perfect! Racer is in Vegas? I am sure he is having fun, it's beautiful here now and it's probably a lot cheaper than other times of the year! And less crowded! Too bad I didn't know beforehand, I could have checked on stuff for him... oh well, next time maybe!
+0MARLBC Nah, it's not a stupid question!! There is no forward or backward with the clutch, it will work in either direction!! It depends on how your chain lines up with the rear sprocket, that's how you determine if your clutch teeth face in or out!! The band brake will work either way!!☺
great idea, but i heard of people having to take off the band brake because it would make the clutch so hot that it had to be greased before every ride. does it heat up the clutch or is it working alright for you guys?
805ROADKING yeah, either that or they were using the wrong grease, or they were too hard on the brakes, or they had a faulty clutch to begin with. whatever the reason, i'm no longer discouraged to make one of these things.
What is that part you used for adjusting the cable called? I wanna pick one up because im doing something very similar with my bike but I dont know what its called.
I woulda flipped that so you were using the bottom mount holes in the shaft side cover. Then woulda made a pedal brake outa rod and metal. Seems like that hand brake would be hard to squeeze? But... if it works why change things. Just thinkin out loud so to speak. :)
That brake looks great! I've been using opened up bicycle hand brakes to stop the clutch.Same theory. My bikes are on you tube under wademademotorozedmayhem. or john wades motorized bikes
I'll bet Racer will be surprised when he gets back...no brakes reminds me of a car a the auction..notice on horn that brakes don't work..use emergency brake! LOL! Jack
one would highly doubt that using this for intermittent braking (which stops entirely or almost at least the motion of said clutch drum which cause no more slipping for any longer than riding) would cause more heat than the slipping clutch pads would cause trying to pull an adult with a kids toy.....The last thing I would really be worried about is the clutch not lasting as long. Maybe it rusting...
What a fantastic job! I'm re building my mini bike. It also had no brakes. You have no clue how happy I am for this video. Thank you so much!
absolutely love the modification and ingenuity shown here. I hope to be this good someday. and build a few mini bikes as well.
Thanks alot Bud!!☺
That's worked out really well. Lil' Racer will love Lime Green :)
Sweet, I never had go karts or mini bikes. Never heard of a Band Brake. I bow to the master fabricator
Lol!! Thank you Joe!!☺
ingenious, great job, thanks for showing this.
Genius! He's going to be a happy guy upon his return.
Gotta take care of Lil' Racer!!☺
Craig Arndt
Yeah and a safe one at that!. :-)
Nice brake set up !!! Great job there buddy !!
Thanks Sloky!!☺
Very cool place for that band brake.

Nice solution...well done my friend. I'm sure Racer will be happy when he comes back.
Thanks alot Bud!! I know I feel alot better now that I know he can stop!!☺
That was some good fabricating on that !!! and that was some fast drilling on those holes
Thank ya Buddy!! I didn't want to waste your valuable time showing you how to drill a hole!! You get the idea eh!!☺
I was wondering if You used a drill press or hand dril But I got the Idea !!!
Best video I have found searching on youtube I'm in the middle of restoring a go kart that needs brakes and has the drum on it for band brakes and now I have a basic understanding of how to fix them thanks!
That's cool!! I'm glad it helped!!☺
Yeah maybe I'll post a video of the assembly and a test run on my other channel (Jyxed Editor) I'll let you know
That was some seamless editing with the hole drilling :) Thumbs up.
Lol!! Thanks Mate!!☺
good work, he needed that prolly, cheers
Thanks Mate!! He sure did!! Cheers!!☺
awesome idea
Great job there Buddy!
Thanks Bud!! We gotta keep the Kiddies safe eh!!☺

Hi Roadking. I had missed this video. Great job !
All the best.
Bobby

805ROADKING
I'll get them watched Roadking. Thank you for the great videos.
All the best.
Bobby
I had a mini bike when I was just a little kid and it had the same brake set up it worked real well. Nice job.
Thanks Mick!! Yeah they do the job and they're cheap!!☺
Finally Google is gonna let me comment....I been watching though !....That Green with a few Black accent colors would look awesome !
Good to have ya back Capt.!! Yeah that would look cool, don't know if he'll do it though!! I think he likes the Rat Rod look!!☺
Another good video , all I need now is the mini bike LOL
Thanks Mate!! Keep lookin' you'll find one!!☺
LOOKING GOOD ROADKING ALWAYS ENJOY YOUR VIDEOS
THANK YOU BUDDY!!☺
Nice work sir
Thanks Bud!!☺
Hey do you think that a band brake like this would mount right on a torque converter?
better than new and ready to drive to vegas
Lol!! Yeah Buddy!! Better than new!!☺
I was thinking that maybe you should flip the band so as the clutch is spinning and the band clamps it would be pulling at the bolt instead of pushing. the brake may work better if it was working with the rotation instead of against it. like self actuating drum brakes on a car.
I've tried it both ways on other Bikes and it works equally well both ways!! I like this set up better because the cable set up is more direct and cleaner looking!!☺
Oh OK I was over thinking it maybe LOL!
***** l was thinking the same thing,,that it would assist in keeping the band tight with less effort, but it may lock up so easy that it dosent matter
Picking up a used mini bike tomorrow, I think I'm going to follow your setup. Q- when tightening/adjusting the cable, does it hold the band in place so it won't drag on the drum?
Ray Cadd Yeah the band itself is like a spring, it wants to stay open!! You won't have any problem with it dragging!!☺
Rotate your brake bracket 90° counter clockwise on the motor so that the cable is at the bottom
john matthews but wouldn’t the bracket touch the motor plate when mounted that way?
Not tryin to 'jinx' ya or anything... but how ya gonna stop if the chain comes off/breaks?
Hey whats the distance between the holes center to center for the flat stock bracket?
Sweet!, That's a nice fab job brother. Love that lime green, for a 70's (or 80's) minibike it's perfect! Racer is in Vegas? I am sure he is having fun, it's beautiful here now and it's probably a lot cheaper than other times of the year! And less crowded! Thanks Bud!! Lil' Racers Honey is from Vegas, The rest of Her Family is still out there!!☺
Oh, well that explains a lot... most tourists don't come to visit when the weather is great like it is now! He has his own guide to Vegas!
I need to do this to my crazy ass pocket bike
nice job
Thanks Bud!!☺
i like this ideal but what size of band do you need to get for a stander clutch brake deal they come in 4" and 4-1/2" to 6" in.
4"
I bought a harbor freight clone motor for 30 bucks with a clutch brake and little performance exhaust on it to.
Does the pad on the break wear out quickly? because i have a project of my own and I'm looking forward to doing this
+Mw3TheOriginal Nah, never had one wear out yet!!☺
I need to add one of these to my ruttman....
They work great until you throw a chain!!☺
You should make an update vid of your bike dude!!
What size is the brake Band 4" or 4 1/2"
Wouldn't you be SOL if the chain popped off or broke?
Ya know ,funny thing is I'd prefer the rainy day in the shop :)
Lol!! I've been workin' Him pretty hard lately!! It was a well deserved vacation!!☺
Still watching!!... 🙂 but you can solder the end of the cable as soon as you cut it so it doesn’t fray!
I’m looking into brakes for my lil beast
My mini bikes brakes are absolutely horrible , would this fix that
Matthew Abt
Most definitely would it's the best alternative believe it or not!...
so you need to install the clutch backwards or is that a different clutch? im new to building so sorry if its a stupid question.
+0MARLBC Nah, it's not a stupid question!! There is no forward or backward with the clutch, it will work in either direction!! It depends on how your chain lines up with the rear sprocket, that's how you determine if your clutch teeth face in or out!! The band brake will work either way!!☺
+805ROADKING Awesome! Thank you so much for answering me that!
great idea, but i heard of people having to take off the band brake because it would make the clutch so hot that it had to be greased before every ride. does it heat up the clutch or is it working alright for you guys?
I've never had problems with any band brakes!! if it's getting hot like that it must be rubbing all the time!!☺
805ROADKING
yeah, either that or they were using the wrong grease, or they were too hard on the brakes, or they had a faulty clutch to begin with. whatever the reason, i'm no longer discouraged to make one of these things.
What is that part you used for adjusting the cable called? I wanna pick one up because im doing something very similar with my bike but I dont know what its called.
The part thats on the band not the one for clamping the outer casing
Don't know what they are called!! Check OMB Warehouse, they will have them
805ROADKING Thanks for the help!
I woulda flipped that so you were using the bottom mount holes in the shaft side cover. Then woulda made a pedal brake outa rod and metal. Seems like that hand brake would be hard to squeeze? But... if it works why change things. Just thinkin out loud so to speak. :)
will this set up work on a go kart?
Yeah I should work fine!!☺
If the chain breaks or comes off then he has no brakes.
mr.one more question.what size is that band?
It depends on the size of your clutch or drum, where ever you're gonna put it on!! Most of the time it's 4 inches!!☺
Yes thank you i just now realize that.i ordered a band that was 4-3/4 but then changed it to 4inches.my clutch size is 4 inches so it makes sense.
That brake looks great! I've been using opened up bicycle hand brakes to stop the clutch.Same theory. My bikes are on you tube under wademademotorozedmayhem. or john wades motorized bikes
what brand and size motor is that?
5 HP Briggs
805ROADKING thanks!
Is lilracer gonna get hitched out there?
Lol!! That's what I asked him before he went!! I got hitched out there when I was his age!!☺
I'll bet Racer will be surprised when he gets back...no brakes reminds me of a car a the auction..notice on horn that brakes don't work..use emergency brake! LOL! Jack
Lol!! That's funny!! You just have to hope they put a Jockey in there that can read or speak english eh!!☺
Isn't that bad for the clutch
one would highly doubt that using this for intermittent braking (which stops entirely or almost at least the motion of said clutch drum which cause no more slipping for any longer than riding) would cause more heat than the slipping clutch pads would cause trying to pull an adult with a kids toy.....The last thing I would really be worried about is the clutch not lasting as long. Maybe it rusting...
Is this a 4" Band Brake..??
Yeah!!☺
805ROADKING
Thanks man..i need it for a gokart project im working on since i will be using the same setup..
Taghiol
Who needs brakes?
700 vids eh!!
Give me a brake... brakes are over rated... and for chickens lol
Seems like it was just 699 videos we got started eh!! I hope Racer don't make me take it off!!☺
