      @ShyFly221 ปีที่แล้ว +423

    • @cynicreviewer
      @cynicreviewer ปีที่แล้ว +178

You both have good points, but I would add that panic attacks and anxiety attacks are entirely different. Yes some people get both-but panic attacks are experiencing the feeling that you are about to die in the next second constantly for sometimes hours, to the point where your body is mimicking the precursors of a oncoming heart attack, which therefore increase the panic attack in a vicious circle. I have panic attacks but don’t have social or general anxiety at all, sometimes I get one when I’m in the middle of a happy mood in fact

I understand the premise of the joke, but mental talks are case-by-case. Personally, I have a friend who I also think blows things up way out of proportions - stressing over things that, also in my opinion, are just small things and calling it depression. Then I learned of the personal things that makes them be like that and it makes sense, after years of them supressing it to avoid being called "soft". I guess it's better to have compassion than just tell someone to suck it up since you can never put yourself exactly in the shoes of others.

My brother uses mental health as an excuse to be the laziest mfr in all of reality. There's another issue of mind over matter and the power of mentality.
There's a reason therapy even works in the first place. Sitting down, talking, sorting out your thoughts, and getting solutions from a doctor.
There's a reason placebo can work, too. The brain is powerful.
Illness can manifest itself even when there isn't any if you believe you're I'll. There are studies finding that some of these kids of tiktok who think they have stuff wrong with them in some cases are literally causing real damage with their delusion.
The mass psychosis and glorification of mental illness on tiktok and social media among young kids is literally creating mental illness from nothing.
This kind of hard talk is a necessity.

There are definitely people who blow things out of proportion for "silly" reasons and it's easy to laugh at them and tell them to "suck it up," but anxiety is a real thing that real people struggle with, and you don't have to go through immense amounts of trauma to have it. Heyo. I rarely make comments, but I enjoy your content, and as a soon to graduate psych major and someone with personal experience with mental illness, I'd at least like to lay out some disclaimers. I'll preface this by saying I'm not offended by this content or anything, nor do I think you're entirely wrong. Big pharma is a giant scam, healthcare overall sucks. But I've seen the take in this video growing a lot recently, and idk how I feel about it, at least in reference to my experiences and what I've learned in college over the years.
An important thing to keep in mind is that, while it may seem like mental illness has become "so mainstream/acceptable" now that people are "abusing" it's language, this is predominantly the case in cis-white cultures. Multiple studies have shown that minorities struggle to be seen and heard when voicing similar struggles, to receive diagnosis, treatment, or medication. This is especially true of black communities.
Also, many non-white cultures still carry HEAVY stigma against mental illness or therapy of any kind. Even in white, intellectual spaces like my college, I have been discriminated against by my own professors and not given the accommodations I am legally allowed to have under disability law. People don't "believe" its "that bad" because of how casually I can speak about it, and how smart, successful, and happy I look on the outside. But I am very mentally ill. I have been suicidal, have had to be pulled out of school for months to go to intensive psychiatric care. The first time I hurt myself was to convince my parents I was mentally ill because I kept telling them I didn't feel good, that I was suffering, but they didn't believe me enough to want to sign me up for therapy until I crossed that line. And I knew many people in my high school, at my current college, who are avoidant of therapy because of that internalized stigma that's still there.
Yes, things are better in our culture, and maybe some people are being wrongly diagnosed and using these terms as a crutch. But everyone's pain is relative. I never went through anything awfully traumatic, and I still became suicidal. And that doesn't make my feelings any less valid. I would just be very careful of invalidating people's experiences and steering those away who need treatment from getting it. It's my personal opinion that I would rather some people be possibly overdiagnosed but everyone who needs treatment gets it rather underdiagnose populations that need help.
I still really enjoy your content, and don't think you're entirely wrong, but I wanted to share my opinion because I also don't entirely agree, and this is something I'm educated in. I'm not intending to start a fight of any kind, only sharing my views.

i don't think this video is "oh people with mental illnesses need to suck it up"
i think it's more of people just saying that they have anxiety or depression over the most mundane things you've ever heard of
i had a friend who said he had depression because he had to watch a powerpoint presentation in class in the morning
people just don't say that they're 'stressed' or 'sad' anymore they just jump straight to panic attacks and depression almost numbing the phrases
and it's so often just an excuse not to work as hard as everyone else, it's really tiring.

Reality is the middle ground. Far too many people call stress anxiety and sadness depression. Anxiety is not eating for a week because you’re too scared to leave the house, but it’s also calling in sick to work because you woke up feeling dread about having responsibilities. Depression is my grandmother getting bedsores because all she can do is cry and sleep for 9 days straight, but it’s also failing a University paper because you can’t bring yourself to feel anything resembling motivation or hope. Mental illness is irrefutably a real and debilitating condition, but using it as a crutch to get away with being a bad person is very rarely acceptable.

I have ptsd from my parents but i didnt know for years until i took a psych class, asked a question and it shattered my view of reality, because i had always thought i had a good relationship with my parents and it was healthy... if i had this happen then, that would have caused me to think i was wrong and avoid a serious issue i had in my life... ptsd as an example is incredibly. I don't know man I think this video is kinda tone deaf.
First thing is associating depression and anxiety with gen z, like is something that showned up because "genz can't handle a little inconvinience" but you have to consider that mental health problems weren't considered a thing by society until very recently, so one of the reasons why more people are showing up with anxiety or depression is that more people are going to a psychiatrist and being diagnosed.
Secondly, the socialeconomic status of people overall declined over the last 30 years, people are earning less and paying more, and that tends to make people very stressed constantly, being stressed constantly leads to things like burn out and anxiety that if not treated can lead to panic syndrome and/or maniac depression.
Thirdly, people and their enviroment react diferently to certain things, a thing not being a big deal to you can be a big deal to others, and if someone deals with anxiety that can be a trigger for a panic attack, who are you to judge?
This video just reinforce the shitty idea that mental health issues are "just being dramatic" and it's really disppointing to see such an insensitive video out you.

What really bugs me is when they use it as an excuse to not work as hard - That's not how it works (At least for depression - I can't say for other mental illnesses) Your mental illness may be the reason you don't get as much done, but it's not an excuse - NEVER an excuse. Hyperventilating, legs bouncing around from muscle spasms, drenched in cold sweat, and when its over ur body has been through so much u just fall asleep. I dont have them anymore and i dont know what caused them but they are not a casual experience they are brutal.

Can be triggered by thought patterns or tons of different stimulus depending on the person and situation. It's the brain going into hardcore fight or flight mode without a genuine trigger like a life or death situation. Panic attacks exist mostly of abstract fear and lots of adrenaline (thus the feeling super tired afterward). I've had plenty of them.
Best advice: Sit down somewhere calm, focus on deep breathing (as you'll naturally want to hyperventilate with small breaths), and think about everything positive in your life. Friends, family, possessions, religion, whatever you're grateful for and happy you have. If you can muster up enough willpower it'll end in 5-10 minutes. I've had one that lasted for 8 hours :D But that was also fueled by bad choices.

I’m conflicted. Some of these points are accurate, but it’s very oversimplified and lacks nuance. I think people do overuse these terms, but at the same time there are people like me who are working every day to be better. These labels might seem strange or irrelevant to some, but they help me find solutions and move through my problems. I think society is just in a vulnerable place. Yelling at people to suck it up won’t do much. Just because someone’s trauma isn’t as simple as someone dying doesn’t mean it isn’t valid. Of course there are those who call a slightly uncomfortable experience “traumatic” which makes the word redundant. This video feels more like hitting someone down when they are weak rather than helping them up and letting them take time to heal and move on. I don’t know if that was the intention, but society has just become self aware. The problem is we only have two view points that people love to support. Either everyone is a victim and life is horrible, or stop being a wimp. No getting stronger or trying to become a better person while acknowledging your flaws and insecurities and trials… people only care about making bold statements for views and attention. I don’t know. I kind of understand because I’ve known people who have done really crappy things and just said “yeah sorry it was my anxiety” but I struggle a lot. SO MANY PEOPLE DO. I think our role in society is to help others and let others help you, all heal and become better people together. Not just “get over it”- that’s the issue. Society has been about building up anger and then taking it out on someone and it’s a horrible cycle. We (in the western world) are just over correcting. I sob over the stupidest crap. It doesn’t make me feel any better to know that it’s worthless to do so. I just have to let go and eventually move on. I don’t know. This approach might be bold and trendy but it’s just not it. I won’t unfollow you or anything, there are just people I won’t agree with and that’s life, but I hope you at least read some of the comments disagreeing who aren’t just plain offended and lashing out. Have a good one.

It will make people feel less about themselves and feel inadequate to the standards that are pushed onto them through their physical environment and their online ones. People are complicated, and while some make stuff up for attention, others actually need the help and support of the people around them, and videos like this perpetuate the external and internal struggle of the people who need help and push them further away from asking for the support they need.
It's videos like this that perpetuate stereotypes, isolate affected people and push others to become more judgemental, negative and unhappy. That's my two cents, and I hope anyone who is struggling with anything (whether you know what it is or not) is doing ok and takes this video with a grain of salt, knowing that not everyone thinks this way, and that there will always be people willing to support you even if you have to look for them.

It's very true that people toss around mental health labels because they're just edgelord sigma 12 year olds that are sad they can't stream Fortnite for a living, but this type of gaslighting is exactly is what is harming mentally ill people. This frankly feels like a take that someone who has never dealt with mental health before would say- specifically granted the specifications of the conversation, such as having panic attacks and taking meds for it. News flash, you don't need to witness a building blowing up to have a panic attack. Anxiety strikes irrationally and it strikes randomly. Instead of this lecturing, black and white method of responding to mental health problems, maybe we should try to...idk... understand more?

I get how people could get the opposite idea of what he wants then to when they watch the video, whether they think he's calling all mental illness and medication fake and attacking him for it, or taking the same message from the video and agreeing with it. Mixed thoughts on this video - on one side it's a legitimately good message towards the numerous amounts of people nowadays who have Munchausen's syndrome, but it's also a direct attack on the people who legitimately have a mental disorder/illness they have to fight.
Many guys are certainly not tough enough and should suck it up, especially if they're faking it, but at the same time, many guys have also been told to suck it up so many times, they eventually become desentisized to that, and end up being worse than what they could've been had they been helped.
    Very controversial video
EDIT 1: After some thoughts, ultimately, the approach the creator of this video has towards someone who's expressing their feelings is very, very questionable as well. Instead of listening to the concerns the 1st guy has, he just shuts it down.
It depends on how the 1st guy takes it, but if he doesn't take it well, that can cause trauma. Repress too much of it, and it will explode, and the 2nd guy, if his mental threshold is not strong enough, will end up doing something that will harm him.

I get that it’s a comedy but depression does have several causes and sometimes it just comes completely out of the blue. My generation HAS made the word depressed a sort of slang for just being sad but most of the time actual depression just isn’t caused by anything. Some people are just built differently and only feel a really small amount of happiness so it’s hard for them to not feel sad and I think that’s clinical depression, probably not PTSD. Stress is quite rational but the longer you hold onto those thoughts, the more irrational it gets. So if you’re a student with a lot of stress just remember to put the thoughts down for a few hours.

On one hand, you are absolutely spot on, we should stop saying we are OCD about what are just pet peeves, stop calling high stress moments in life panic attacks, or feeling sad, even distraught depressed (depressed =/= sad, in fact sometimes its almost the lack of any emotion). I endured a depressive episode before, fortunately not major depression disorder, that lasted several months which I pulled myself out of by changing my lifestyle (would you have guessed it was during the pandemic, no sad event triggered this).
