- My thanks to romelovesdan for providing me the DVD files used for this project. I've enhanced the broadcast recording of the 1975 Week 1 Raiders at Dolphins game. The game was on two separate discs. I ran both through Topaz to denoise, sharpen and double the framerate, and then used Da Vinci Resolve to remove an awful green hue and to fix the very dark picture. You can see the original shots and post enhancement/color here -- imgbox.com/g/A.... This wasn't a great recording to begin with, but it's WAY better than it originally was.

That opening music brings back some great memories - simpler telecasts - no constant, streaming graphics, talking heads and sideline reporters telling us things nobody cares about.

I miss the score being shown constantly. I miss seeing the down and yardage, and seeing the clock. It is hard to follow games without that information.

i haven't watched MNF in a while , they're still using that original theme song aren't they? That's all that's left of the original MNF.....as a kid I hated Cosell....now 50 years later, he ain't so bad .....miss those days, well not the part where I had to go to bed at 10 for school tommorow

I was 9 years old and remember watching nearly the entire game. Prior to this, I was allowed to stay up for the whole game on MNF only if the Vikings were playing. But my mom and dad said from now on, I could watch as long as I stayed awake lol. I remember my mom warming up Patony's Pizza (Ellet, OH) at halftime for a late snack for me, which became a sort of tradition. This was a really good game. Thanks for uploading this.
I was 9 as well. Loved watching the raiders, dolphins, steelers play each other back then. I was a fan of players more so than a team then. Loved Csonka, Villapiano, Hendricks. Hated the Steelers though. lol

My Mom's Side are all from Dallas & you know it, the Cowboys are right behind my Cali. Teams. These 2 teams are the Real Old School Football🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈👏👏👏
9 but I couldn’t stay up on school nights until the Boston v Phoenix NBA Championship series . The commercials during this time were straight to the point with mostly original music. Thanks for this!!1
I was around that age, but I wasn't so lucky. Bed time was 9, unless the Steelers were playing. Then, I was allowed to stay up for the 1st half. First thing Tuesday morning, my mom would have the score from the night before. These videos do bring back some cool memories.
Kenny Stabler is my all time favorite quarterback.
Stabler was an ace. I still wonder what he was smoking on the sidelines back in the real days.

Mine too. I lived in Maryland back in 68 when Stapler was drafted from Bama, where both of my parents went to. I was a Baltimore Colts fan at the time. I switched to the Raiders then. Moved to the Bay Area a year later. Oh those games in Oakland. Those beatings in the parking lot.
Dolphin fan here for over 50 years, Sad to see so many of the greatest players passing on: Stabler, Branch, Kiick, Jake Scott, Shula, Madden..... I miss Madden and Summerall broadcasting more than anything though :(

Yes, I was a dolphin season ticket holder as a young man then and I was there. And of course the last second throw from stapler going down in the AFC championship game 1974. Broke my heart. But seriously I believe nfl football was greater then. I really, and truly do. Fewer teams, smaller salary contracts , equals much better and tougher competition. Great times to be alive.

It would be hard for anyone under 40 to understand how huge Monday Night Football was in the '70s. It was the event of the week. It had no competition in the sports world, and precious little competition on TV. You either read a book, drank a beer on the porch, or watched football on TV. Cosell was bigger than life. Everyone knew who he was. I doubt my mom could name two sports broadcasters in the history of TV, but she could absolutely name Howard Cosell. What an amazing decade. The game had become modern, but it was not yet so heavily commercialized. The game was still the focus. Everything else surrounded it.
Absolutely right on the money. As a school age boy, Monday Night Football gave us a reason not to completely dread the coming of Monday after a weekend with no school. Looking back at these broadcasts through these videos, seeing all of the home-made signs around the stadium directed toward the ABC broadcast crew makes you realize what an event these broadcasts were. When is the last time we saw signs and banners focused on the broadcast crew. Frank, Howard and Don/Alex/OJ were real celebrities, but didn't overplay (debatable with regard to Cossell) their role. Their banter gave the same feel as watching Johnny Carson, Ed McMahon and Doc on the Tonight Show.
Very true plus this: Back in the days of 3 channels, MNF was how we would watch all the Sunday highlights. No sports center, the local news didn’t spend enough time on it. And then relive and replay all we had seen on Tuesday.

Real football!! Not a damn Carnival Arena Football League with a bunch of guys crossing their arms after every play and taunting their opponents .... I miss these days
Kind of ironic that the Miami Hurricanes introduced the taunting clown show in this very stadium a decade later.
The game ended the NFL's longest home win streak. The Raiders were stronger than 1974 thanks in no small part to the addition of Ted Hendricks. The Dolphins lost key players to WFL defection and injuries.
After the loss, Miami went on a tear winning all games until late season losses against the Oilers and the Colts (after more injuries and a blown call that denied Nat Moore's touchdown catch on 33rd Street). The Raiders, for good measure, rolled on back to their fourth AFC championship game in five years...which ended up being played on a mysteriously sudden skating rink at the confluence of the Allegheny and two other bodies of water.

Miami had won 31 in a row (including postseason) at the Orange Bowl dating back to 1971-still the NFL record as stated above #HomeFieldAdvantage
No one except Raiders fans sheds a tear for any of Oakland's tough losses. They had their own share of luck, too, remember? The Holy Roller, which to this day is the worst officiated play ever, the Sea of Hands, all those comebacks by George Blanda, plus 3 SB victories by 1984. They were lucky to get to play the Eagles in 1980. The AFC was weaker, by then, and Philly is one of the worst teams to ever make it to the big game. Oakland had an easy path to get there, and didn't have to face a great team once they did.
People don't give a damn about the Crybabies by the Bay, nor their fans. That is due to the cheap shots and other unsportsmanlike antics by the team. I have never in my 64 years seen a team like those Raiders. They tried to injure players on the opposing teams, and repeatedly. And they are whiny b1tches, too, always complaining about how they got screwed.
They can all go to hell where they belong.
Anyone who rooted for them should be ashamed of themselves.

Stabler was just awful the first 5 games of 1975, yet Oakland, with that great Offensive Line were still able to win 3 of the 5.
Games 1-5: 47 of 98, 600 yards, 1 TD, 12 INT, 47.96% and 6.12 Yd/At
Games: 6-14: 124 of 195, 1696 Yards, 15 TD, 12 INT, 63.59% and 8.70 Yards/Att
Oh man! I miss those days. No ridiculous on screen graphics; no celebrations after each play; no dancing and gesturing. It was just men doing what they were expected to do.
When Miami's skyline had a lot fewer towers than today, when Saturday's college games led into "Wide World of Sports" and were regionalized (ACC vs. Big Ten, Big Ten vs. SWC, ACC vs. SEC, Pac-8 vs. whatever conference San Jose State was in).

I love to watch these old actual telecasts of games not just to see the old players I idolized as a kid and the old commercials (Mr. coffee vs Norelco coffee machines, lol well before Kurig). But the history, this game was played on the day of the assassination attempt on Pres. Ford by ex-Manson follower Sqeaky Fromme which Cosell mentions just before half. Thank you for posting this!

That was amazing. I watched the entire broadcast, brought back a lot of memories-how about those commercials. And really enjoyed the discussion about the Eagles, they had only been around for about 4 years at the time. Thank you for bringing us down “memory lane”.

I cannot watch the NFL games today because I was born in 1958 and grew up watching REAL gridiron football back during the 1960s and 1970s. My favorite teams were the Jets, Chiefs, and Raiders.
Regarding the Opening tease: Cossell could make a backyard Nerf football game exciting. Great voice over.
One thing I noticed about Howard Cosell, is the fact that he habitually interrupts other commentators who are speaking at the time, instead of waiting his turn, he did this to Alex Karas during this game and to O.J. during a Raiders/Dolphins game in 1983....gg, Tampa Florida

I like how the towel boy at 2:40:00 was wiping the sweat off Neal Cozies head and then turned to another player standing there and wipe his head and face with the same towel. Yep, the 70’s.
Wow cool stuff, thank you for taking the time to produce this. I was 7 years old when this game was played. The replay of the earlier game with the MNF theme playing totally gave me goosebumps and I'm now 54. Good stuff. Nothing like the good ole days. 🙂
54 here also. The "Sea of Hands" game is one of my earliest memories, watching it at my grandparents' house at Christmastime.
Raiders verses Dolphins was one of the greatest rivalries in the NFL. Thank you for all your fantastic restoration work on the original video and sharing this full game with some terrific memories.

I became a Dolphins fan in 1975 when I was 6. My 2 favorite players were Bob GRIESE & Nat MOORE.
The Namath burger maker commercial is classic.
Remember his Noxzema shaving cream commercial a few years before when at the end he had chicks rubbing their faces against his freshly shaved one? I was like 6 or 7 at the time and for a moment wanted to be as cool as him so I went into my father's bathroom and busted out the shaving cream one day. I lathered my face and started singing the jingle as I reached for a razor to swipe my face. A minute later I'm bleeding all over the place and go to find my dad to have him help me. He says to me what the hell was I doing?? I told him I was pretending to be Joe Namath!!

How refreshing! Commercials for United Airlines, Ford, STP, Owens-Corning Fiber, Mr. Coffee! Today it seems for each commercial break there's just two ads, one for a 5G coverage device (I refuse to call them a phone anymore, because they're so much more than that...as they contribute to the ruin of society) and the other being an ad for an electric car that no one wants or can afford, starting around 55K! I was starting my junior year in high school when this game was played!
The 1975 NFL season was one of my favorites, I was an 11 year old third year fan unsure which team I wanted as a favorite, I must've had at least a dozen teams I liked during this era, Vikings, Raiders, Dolphins, Bills and my hometown Redskins, But this 1975 Oakland team was really good, Plus these were the true golden days of Monday night football.
Hey Jay! I must concur with what you said. I was a 9 year old kiddo in Cincinnati and though I loved my Bengals.....as you said, when you're a kid at that age...haha!!! I hated the Steelers. The Raiders actually *skeered me* for some reason *lol* - but I loved the Dolphins because of that Powder Blue color with the white of their uniforms etc. Of course Griese and the Czonka Warfield and Co. - these were the years that cemented the NFL in my kid mind.
NFL suxxx now IMO. I watch the Bengals when they play and that is it, I don't live and die with it like I used to.

I used to love the opening of MNF, and to hear the voices of “Dandy” Don Merideth, “The Giff” Frank Gifford and Howard Cossell. Those were great broadcasts.
All it took was Cosell and his recap of the "Sea of Hands" game to bring back the PTSD of that era-ending loss. Those first five seasons under Shula brought ever-increasing success until the Ponzi Scheme known as the WFL took full advantage of Joe Robbie's miserly ways. The franchise would make two more Super Bowls, and lost the second one 36 years ago. Claiming that loss as something this organization never recovered from may be a stretch. But I became a pro football fan when my family moved to Miami in 1966, the Dolphins' inaugural AFL season. Miami could have been the Steelers of the 1970s, but Pittsburgh had the best draft of the decade in 1974, maybe the all-time best one. Miami lost their core of "skill" offensive players (an obsolete term) in that year, and things were never the same.

Oakland's Neal Colzie was a prep legend playing for some powerful teams for Miami's coral gables high. Many of those games in the late 1960s were played in that same beautiful Orange Bowl. Gerald Tinker, Olympic sprint champion, was a teammate of Colzie's.
Nat Moore was a star running back for Miami Edison High who played all of their home games in the OB.

Ahh, Gerald Tinker. As a kid growing up in Atlanta, that name is a blast from the past. I think the hope was that he would be another Bob Hayes. Didn't work out that way.

had the dolphins won the playoff game against the raiders they would have hosted the steelers in the afc title game. pittsburgh was starting their dynasty , but the dolphins were invincible at home. with the roster from 71-74. my utterly worthless opinion is miami would have won
Dave you did a great job enhancing this broadcast even though as a Dolphins Fan I did not like the outcome as it ended the Dolphins record 31 game home winning streak which is still a record as the last time the Dolphins lost in the Orange Bowl before this game was in October 1971 vs the Jets.

Back when we had Night Games in Miami. It was beautiful. When football players had a true sports heart. Now they're just a bunch of money crazed people with free agent thinking. I worked a few times with Earl Morrall in media He was the real thing. Now the real thing is gone.

Though I was about a year or 2 to young to remember this game, I grew up in South Western Pennsylvania, and I don't know which I was taught first, to Love the Steelers or to hate The Raiders!!! (Though, tbh, I was also taught to hate The Browns, The Oilers and ESPECIALLY The Cowboys) But, there was no favoritism, i was definitely taught to hate them all equally. The Browns because Cleveland and Pittsburgh just hate each other. The oilers were a really good team, and biggest division battle, the Raiders because it seemed like every AFC SuperBowl Rep was always either the Raiders or Steelers. (Though Miami was always in the mix too, but, I don't understand why I wasn't taught to hate them!!! Lol.) AND let's face it, EVERYONE from that Era hates the freaking Cowboys!!! Thats about the only thing The Black and Gold and The Silver and Black could, and still can, agree on!! Screw Dallas!!

The Sept 22, 1975 "Rematch" after the Dec. 21, 1974 "The Sea Of Hands" Playoff game. Classic Teams of this true Classic era.
Rematch of the same franchises but not the same teams. The Greatest Dolphin in franchise history, Larry Csonka, was no longer on the team.

Imagine a QB today going 23 for 47, 266 yards, with zero touchdowns and SEVEN interceptions today. That's BOTH QBs combined in this game. Both Hall of famers. Just a different time.

Despite this being a great opener, the game was blackout in Southern Florida. It did sellout after the 72 blackout deadline. Orange Bowl had issues selling out games in the 70's and 80's.

Awesome - Thanks Dave! Question - Have you guys noticed how many mistakes (e.g names, ) that Frank Gifford makes throughout the game? I had no idea!
I recall in the prior season with the Bills versus the Raiders, with both Joe Ferguson and Stabler having the # 12 jerseys, in the latter part of the game when the Bills had ball possession with Ferguson at QB, Gifford kept calling out Stabler's name.
Hard to guess the cause of such verbal gaffs. Maybe too much info was being fed to Gifford, via an audio ear piece, by the TV director that distracted Frank?

Lol, just noticed something. Good thing there was no instant replay. @ 1:19:01 if you pause when Morris is crossing goal line, you can see blur by his helmet, it's the ball leaving his hands. He threw it up in the air a split second before crossing! No TD!
I just watched the multiple angled replays. It IS SO CLOSE!! His foots on the line the split second the ball leaves his hands, but he's kinda leaning back, so, while I believe that it left his hands PRIOR to him crossing, I don't think there would be enough evidence to overturn it either way. So, whatever they would've called on the field, would be upheld. In this case, TOUCHDOWN Dolphins!!!

#3: Watch the game.
