Octopath Traveler has eight very unique characters, and it can be a bit daunting to choose which characters you should start with. Let's go through each of the characters and see which one best suits your play style enough to be the character you start with! In Part Two, we go over the four Noble Heroes. I mean no disrespect, i love your videos and watch them on upload dates, but coming back to these two videos seemed very heavily opinionated... I understand you dont wanna sway others opinions, but if you are asking your audience which play style could best suit them, try to highlight the characters in other ways then just stats and gameplay.

P.s. I started as Cyrus because I've always had a love for wizards. His sorcerer skills are over the top ridiculous thanks to the hidden job.

Alfyn's Concoct ability is the best way to deal with status ailments. The ability is like Rikku's mix overdrive from FFX.

After testing all the characters I decided to start with Tressa because i thought she would be the best choice in the long run and I didn't regreat it I'm bathing in money. I find money walking since the start of the game, i steal money from bosses (now even more with the thief skill to collect double money), her skill to give action points to others is very useful to buff the actions of the most useful member in the team in each situation, this makes her very strategic and very rewarding if you do it properly. Her divine skill is a spell that doesn't only deal a lof of dmg but gives you a lot of gold by using it. Not to say that her 4º passive skill makes her the best spell caster in the game once you have the multy class option.

I started with Primrose. But after about 9 hours of game time, I found out you cannot replace your first choice in the party. I restarted and selected Tressa this time, for the money!! :)

I started with Primerose. My main party is Primerose, Cyrus, Ophilia and Olberic. I have everything i need, 2 casters, 1 healer, 1 tank.
Tressa is actually an extremely effective character.

Ophelia was adopted by essentially the Pope of this world after her parents were killed in a war(15 years ago). She was raised alongside his daughter as sisters. The time has come for her adopted sister to complete a sacred pilgrimage rekindling the sacred flame at several churches. The sacred flame was a gift from one of 12 gods, and used to stop an evil 13th and save the world. However, Ophelia breaks tradition, and takes the journey in her sister's place so her sister can spend time with their dying father.
TLDR: Ophelia is a chosen un-undead trying to rekindle the first flame, and engage in jolly cooperation.

Her "adoptive sister." Adopted sister sounds as if the real daughter was the one adopted and not Ophelia. So fucking confusing. -_-

Tressa is kinda op for some reason she is tanky and has a huge amount of health close to olberick and her hired help ability is just over powered and after bathing in money and defeating bosses with just using 150 bucks I think she is really good
Ophilia’s healing is simpler and easier, but Alfyn’s is much more effective. All you need is soothing dust/purifying dust and essence of grape and you can heal right up to full instantly
I went into the game pretty much blind and I only have maybe 3 hours of gameplay in. I chose Olberic cause I think knights are kinda cool and I guess it turned out great since he is so tanky. Definitely agree that he’s a good starting character.
Dude I tell you what I think your starting party sounds perfect definitely something I will give ago you definitely need somebody to steal you need someone to captures monsters and you also without a doubt definitely need a healer if this game is anything like bravely default I am going to absolutely love it thanks again for this video bro keep up the amazing work can’t wait for your next upload and remember keep on gaming 👊
Thank you so much for these two videos. I'm in my mid 50's and haven't played many turn-based JRPGs (I did play and love Bravely Default and Bravely Second) so I really needed to find out who is the easiest to play for someone like me which you answered.

Well your strait forward honest explinations of all of the characters set my mind at ease in my choice to pick Therion. I thank you for that because my switch has been sitting at the character screen for about 3 hours now. Tressa is 100% going to be my main character but I'm not sure quite yet who else I want on my 4 man team for my first run through, I figure I'll decide along the way and then the remaining 4 will be for my second run-through

Tressa for me as well. Since she seems the most well-rounded, being the "always in party" character allows her to fill any team comp. I was thinking of Alfyn, but since he's a healer I would be less inclined to include Ophilia in a regular party for instance.
I love Ophilia's kit. I plan on making her either a paladin archetype or full coverage of magic types (scholar secondary).
TIP: the guard on the left of her dungeon entrance is VERY useful against the boss as he can break him in as little as two turns.

Alfyn's Concoct skill is basically chemist mix from other Final fantasy games its amazing how dare you xD
in my playthrough, Alph has basically become my tank. He has a truck load of health and deals immense damage.
I chose the Light Type Pokemon Ophilia as my starter Pokemon.
I chose the merchant. She can collect alot of money and can buy things from townsfolk. Once you get a second character, in my case the scholar, it gets very easy. Everyone in our household is starting with a different character to see how different it is for the other. So much fun.
Great vid Wishful. I think Olberic is a good starting character too learn the game but as i have started as the Thief in the latest Demo and the saved data carries over too the main game, i will probably continue with him till the end and then go back too Olberic who i played in the first Demo, although he is more generic, i still wanna see his story out but playing more of this quality game can be a bad thing ;-).
All the 4 characters you mentioned as your picks in the end of the video reflect my party selection.

Tressa’s Rest ability is probably one of the most OP Solo skills in the game and makes her an amazing first character to start with. Also how often do you get to play as a merchant! 100-% choose her as my main character.
Alfyn is easily the most versatile mid and late game, with his ingredients allowing you to do almost any type of magic damage twice on single targets and once on multiple(this goes up by one for ruinous speeds and dust) which is amazing for breaking enemies, as well as having flexibility in healing, getting rid of stat debuffs, inflicting stat debuffs, reviving flexibility, as well as him having alot of health aswell as alot of dmg potential. so if you can get past the "complexity " of him, then he's definitely a great support class pick
"hired help is neat but essentially a waste of money" Not at all. I find myself constantly one shotting random encounters with one cast of hired help alone. Ofc it's pretty draining on your wallet but I still think it's borderline broken
Edit: I barely started doing chapter 2s when I first wrote that comment. Hired help does fall off as you progress further into the game since it doesn't scale with anything at all, but in the first half of the game it's mighty (hired) helpful!

Tressa's hired help is disgustingly high damage when boosted, combine that with a stunned (broken) enemy and that one ability makes her a literal nuke. Should you start with her? No, but you should beeline for her as soon as possible for the extra money. Primrose and Ophelia have high damage summons too, but accessing them is more difficult (since it is level gated or based on allure success chance.
As an aside later on Alfyn with a sub-job (i.e. secondary class) as a cleric will probably make for a better healer than Ophilia since then you will have access to all apothecary and cleric skills along with Alfyn's unique crafted support items and buffs/debuffs). Granted Alfyn's base magic is lower than Ophilia's afaik, so that is the trade-off.

Your selling Alfyn short he is basically a combat medic if you speck into the right abilities he can do almost as much physical damage as olberic also with the ability to get sp back from said physical damage you always have the sp to cure allies he is definitely one of the stronger characters in the game especially once all his abilities have been unlocked

The Rant honestly can’t go wrong.
I feel like Therion is the only real choice here, although it'd be worthwhile to make a beeline for Cyrus as soon as you finish his Chapter 1. No matter where I go or what I do, I'm never going to want to backtrack for some locked chest, so always having Therion in my party feels like a no-brainer. Cyrus's Analyze seems extremely valuable as long as you keep finding new enemies, but once you know what everything is weak to, you're weighing his usefulness against other party members.
Are the same townspeople re-recruitable after you use them up? Or are they all single use until you eventually run out of people to recruit
Good question! Confirmed, they do respawn in town after they have reached their max summons and disappear.
H'aanit was my starting character....just got a full party of 4 right now. so it's H'aanit,Therion,Alfyn and Primrose. Just arrived in Obleric's town. Absolutely loving this game so far
Sean Barrett nice! I’m working on chapter 2 of all my characters, my current party is usually Cyrus, H’annit, Ophelia, and a rotating fourth chair. I’m glad this game is living up to the hype! It keeps getting better as it goes, too.
My uncle gave me this game and i did a little research and i see this game is 3 years old I was so surprised cause the game has really good graphics. I picked alfyn as my starter as i went in the game without knowing much and alfyn just looked cool. Now I have completed all characters chap-2 and my main team is
1. Alfyn secondary job warrior
2. Haanit secondary job thief
3. Cyrus secondary job merchant
4. Ophilla secondary job dancer
I picked Teressa while playing blind. SP Saver + SP self healing skill+ Scholar sub job is overpowered by the time Ch 2 rolls around and is usable by the endgame (probably outclassed by Runelord or Sorcerer though).
Hired Help is actually one of the strongest abilities of the game. The way it boosts is the same as a normal attack, so it's great at breaking barriers, Mercenary gives a defense buff, and Veteran Soldier almost always does at least 10k damage when fully boosted. 30k leaves isn't too hard to get by Ch 4, and you only need 3 or 4 in a Ch4 boss battle, assuming your other party members are pulling some of their weight. It also works with the Cleric's divine skill, making damage output even crazier.
I let my kindergartner select my first character. Obviously, he chose the warrior.
He thought the thief was a bad buy because thief, so he didn't want that. He doesn't think a dancer can fight, has no idea what a scholar or merchant would do in battle, and a priest just talks about Jesus, right? So it was either warrior or hunter.
Alfyn does require items for Concoct, but he saves items with skills to heal, revive and cure ailments. I started with him and am loving every minute.
In a game I am making the first healing job (found super early btw) is the Chemist, which requires and rewards item management. I also feel like it helps early game by not adding new mechanics right away and making items more efficient: it doesn't fall off endgame if you invest in it. Maybe I am wrong to do that...
PS - The game is like the Bravely series and a bit of old Paper Mario
The real choice is ophilia! So when ur traveling in caves shes carrying the lantern ;) a bit of game lore and mechanic sync-up
Idk olberic is fun to me, he's simple, but I love going to every strong npc and fighting
If I were to replay I would suggest Therion. He is useful in town and in combat. Stealing in town, opening the occasional locked treasure chests, boss debuffs, and hp/sp self replenishing. Since that character is locked in your party almost the entire game I’d say Therion is the one I want with me most consistently.
Therion's usevis steal and purple chests, he has no other use than these two, and later you find out that some are imosible to steal
I agree with your choices! Cyrus, H'aanit and Ophilia are my top 3 choices :) Not 100% sure who I want as that 4th slot. How often do you think we'll need to alternate our party members? Do you think I could keep those 3 consistent, or will I likely need to interchange most of them?
I think you could safely pick your entire party and lock them in. However, if you want to experience all stories, you'll want to swap them out because there are level requirements.
My crew is definitely going to be H'annit, Cyrus, Therion, and Ophilia for most of the game. But, hey, they might surprise me later down the road?
I have a feeling Cyrus will be my 4th slot as well. Those 4 seem the most interesting, and Therion's steal ability would be really nice to have. I do want to experience all paths, so I guess I'll just do a bit of grinding for the other party members when that time comes.
I started with H'aanit. I'm going to try and use all of the characters, at least for each of their respective chapters. This probably means a ton of grinding.
Some people might be saying this is a great game to start with for anyone who's not played or familiar with an rpg. I beg the differ, since if you start your journey into rpg with this game, I think it'll be hard to find any next game to top the experience of this one....
Try using the clerics divine skill on a merchant and have them fully boost and summon the veteran soldiers, it does soooo much damage
I use alfyn just because he’s fun as heck to use and has higher dps than Ophelia plus axe skills cannot be understated
My Original Team was this:
Cyrus, Ophilia (Hunter Secondary), H'aanit, and Tressa (Thief Secondary)
Tressa is actually a GREAT character. Sure, her original abilities aren't that great, but if you equip her with a Secondary Ability such as Warrior or Thief, she has a ton of SP. And she even has a Support Skill where it halves the amount of SP needed for Special Moves.
I got the Thief Secondary ability and equipped it on her, and boy. She was OP for Chapter 3 when I eventually leveled her up. 15 SP for an attack that does around 3000-4000 Damage on every enemy (When broken), (Which is Aeber's Reckoning) she became a powerhouse, and became a crucial part of my team.
Overall, Tressa is a good character, but you need to put in the work, to find a mainly physical secondary ability, level her up, and get all the Special Moves for the Secondary Ability, but in the long run, she will become very crucial to your team.

My orginal party was going to be therion, tressa, primrose and cyrus, but after doing each of the first chapters of each charecter it become therion, alfyn,ophelia and hannit.
Alfyn, sword guy, dancer woahman, and Cyrus shadmage is what my teams looking like.
Does it matter though ? If you like in about 5 hours you can have full party. It is just the beginning of the journey. What matter most is what roster you bring for later encounters.
Tressa is my favorite character, all of her skills are useful in battle, rest gives you HP and SP for free. She has use of multiple weapon types to break enemies. Her ability to find money is very useful for getting strong gear for all your characters. She is the only character with wind magic without using an item. Just my thoughts.
Also Alfyn is amazing for causing status effects to the enemy using concoct, and he has better healing skills than Ophilia using concoct as well.
My main team will be:
Tressa
Alfyn
H'annit
Olberic.
Cyrus, Ophelia, Olberic would pretty much be my core party. Then it'd either be Primrose for the support or H'aanit for more damage through her summoning.

What do you mean by “in your party”? Theoretically couldn’t you just build up all characters since there is no main overarching story?
Brohansan Sure, and I have been, but there’s for certain characters that I would rather not have in my main group of four, and some that I can’t imagine swapping out for anyone. I keep some in there for their story chapter and then remove them ASAP.
Because everyone’s all about that CUSTOMIZATION nowadays lol
So just to clarify: The character you pick at the start is locked in, but wouldn't the character whose path quest you're currently doing also need to be included? E.g. you pick Tressa to start, but you're doing Ophilia's chapter 2 path quest, so wouldn't both of them NEED to be included for that current quest?
Alessandro Nicastri exactly. They have to be in your party in order to continue their story, and they must also be the required level.
Ah, so the recommended level is actually a requirement? It seems like if one wants to experience everything, then having a dedicated 4 person party would be limiting and instead you one need to frequently swap in and out? I actually like that.

Definitely do. It seems like a great entry point for people new to the genre. Like I said in the video, try starting with Olberic so it's not too overwhelming!

In the end, after careful consideration, I decided to go with Olberic. Mainly becaause of how bulky he was in the demos, but also because he SCREAMS protagonist to me. He feels like THE main character and I love him. He's the man

IDK. I felt the same about Primrose, so I chose her. After playing through the game, I was surprised at the individual journeys- many lack cohesion and most have... interesting choices for final bosses. TBH I feel like in terms of story arc, Primrose was my favorite and, in my opinion most well crafted. In terms of raw power and utility, I def. agree that Olbric was best.
(Spoilers- To both kinda back up my point and so I can rant)
(Like half of the characters face antagonists with literally no build up before their 4th chapter. Tressa, though she’s my second favorite- WHAT WAS HER FINAL BOSS? It felt INCREDIBLY forced and kinda flimsy in terms of motivation- we still don’t know WHY this woman wanted her journal or the reason she wanted to kill Tressa? Also, Oblrics final boss was... anticlimactic? The climax was literally in the 3rd chapter so... it felt kinda bleh. Hannit, Prim, and others to an extent (Ophelia/Thereon) had bosses that we spent the entire game preparing to fight. I love ever character and each of their stories, but there are some arcs like Tressa whose arc is basically just happening upon things that have little impact on anything further down the line, but then there’s arcs like Primrose’s where everything is a small step in achieving a larger overarching goal. Characters like Tressa and Alphen just didn’t feel like protagonists in their own stories. Not that that’s anything against them, Terssa’s my be problematic, but it was definitely the most upbeat and enjoyable, Alfen’s was actually surprisingly good, and they are both staples on my team! (Tressa is so balanced she can handle ANY support Job and raked in money/ Alfen was strong and enough to pack a punch, can heal and inflict status ailments, AND concoct is broken if you splurge a bit- it basically gives you the ability to exploit ANY magical weaknesses sometimes multiple times, and heal HP/SP/BP or any stat ailment inflicted on you.) if I had to point to the “Protagonists” I’d point to: Primrose, Olbric, Hannit, Therion, and Phili.
How good is Octopath Traveler so far still thinking about getting it. Also did you get it digital or physical?

Ever think about what happened to RTS tile games, like FFT or Tactics Ogre LUCT? Personally I love these types of games,but why did they die out?

Haha, I went on a tangent about FF Tactics during my video about Square Enix games coming to switch. Love those kinds of games. Fire emblem is the closest thing scratching that itch for me any time recently.

I picked Cyrus, no regrets, used him in demo too. I'm a literal god with him.
My Party Olberic (Warrior/Warmaster), Ophilia (Cleric/Sorcerer), Cyrus (Scholar/Starseer) and Primrose (Dancer/Cleric). All Bosses using mainly magic are ridicoulisly easy with this setup (dont even need the starseer to force magic users to commit suicide :D )
A lot of people like Primrose the most because of her dark story and revenge motivation. However, that was a common trope for me as I read a lot of Martial art novels (wuxia) that this is very normal story for me. My favorite story so far is Ophelia's. It reminds me of I am Setsuna's story and that game is a let down for me. I want to see how Ophelia's story spans out, and it is rare to see a church that's not evil (at least it seems now...)

I started with Alfyn who I find a very good character but Cyrus is my staple. He is so powerful and his AoE is too good to say no to. I take Therion in my party wherever I go because he is all round a good character in battle as well as his amazing field skills of stealing and lockpicking. Currently I'm rotating my last character for whichever the story I'm doing includes but most of the time k have Tressa as she has alot of the skills and abilities the other 3 members miss. 2 new weapon types and wind magic. Plus the money generation is really useful. I don't dislike the rest but they haven't really resonated with me. Ophelia I find difficult to play and much prefer Alfyn as he has the strength and viable healing (although I am using items often too). Olberic is all round good but I feel like everything he is, is already done by a combination of other members (e.g. Therion and Tressa). Primrose is good but I fell like her only use is dark magic of which I could just break using something else or equip dancer as a secondary job to use it. H'annit is powerful in damage and abilities but she has a low accuracy with her bow skills and having to capture monsters all the time is a pain that is barely worth it for limited summons (plus her bad old English hurts me as someone in the UK)

Definitely. It will take a while, because I want to see everything I can before giving my full impression, but it will be up at some point!

I’ll go with an all noble party for a good challenge.
I would think an all Rogue party would be more of a challenge seeing as none are a healer or tank.
You need all 8 at high level and well built to beat the endgame.
Ophilia is the closest character to the games protagonist.
What's the difference between guide/inquire and allure/scutinize
Kefkaownsall guide and inquire require level to use, whereas allure and scrutinize use a percentage chance to use successfully. Also, with allure/scrutinize, if you fail, you can hurt your reputation in town.
BTW- When you clear the story of the character you selected to begin with, you get to swap them out of the party if you wish.
(Considering my Primrose build has more Maj Attack than Cyrus... I’m not giving her up anytime soon!)
I don't get this. Does it matter who you pick for a character? I just want to play and beat the game like any other traditional RPG.
who ever you pick, you are stuck with until you complete their chapter 4. So this video just helps players make sure they pick someone they will like

Also the best character to start whit is probably Tressa she crazy good alone (good damage physical good magical damage, Solide bulk and great dodge, she gain money so if you start whit her you will make money quickly, she also got some self heal so until you get a support alie she even more subtainable than Olberic) AKA This one is the true Easy mode.

I started with Ophilia because:
1) She's a healer and I usually like healers.
2) That way I could play the stories in alphabetical (OCTOPATH) order.
My final party will probably have Cyrus, because I like mages and he's decently strong, Primrose, because I've found having a buffer to be super effective in doing damage, and Tressa, because she can create BP and generate SP, which when combined with a thief, can then be given to my SP heavy characters so I don't need to worry about items or anything.
The one problem I can find is that it's way too support-based, but Tressa is holding her own in damage dealing and somehow Ophilia has my highest damage output by far.
I did this too but I started out with Cyrus. I find that if you use primrose to power up Cyrus he does a lot of damage

The best thing about this game is that you're not forced to get all Characters. You can even solo run it if you're into that. For now though, my plans are to get through a 100% clear with H'aanit as my starter (loved her theme since she was revealed for the first time). Once I'm done with that, I actually plan to start a Rouge% and a Noble% playthrough just for the challenge each of them provide for the player.
This game is just that amazing, I can't see me getting tired of it anytime soon.

1.Apothecary divine skill + Alfyn's concoct is actually very game beaking. .
2. Tressa Runelord. Handsdown breaks the game.

Tressa could be decent, because later on I found that I was really stretching for money. But Cyrus’s Study Foe ability really cannot be overlooked. It helps soooo much, especially early game.
Wishful Thinking Channel yea I love any game where you can be a merchant (I’ve been on a moonlighter kick recently) so Tressa gonna be my starter then Cyrus then probably Ophelia and 4th up in the air
You’ll switch out party members more often than you think! It surprised me how dynamic and fluidly they swap in and out of your party.
I went Tressa. I love all the extra money I can get. I haven’t had any trouble getting $ from enemies, yet. It’s great how much you get from bosses and such!
Picked up Cyrus, Ophelia, and Olberic so far. I kind of want to add Therion to see how much extra loot that adds with Tressa, but adding a Thief to my party seems to directly oppose Tressa’s origin story, so I might completely avoid Therion all together. Depends on how much I care about role-playing Tressa.

Yes i know the games been out for over two months now but i find odd and kinda funny that almost everything you said about the characters was wrong. Especially in regards to Tressa and Olberic Olberic is by no mean the strongest character nor is he "easy" mode. And Tressa is one of if not the strongest character in the whole game. Isn't this a review channel? i only ask because you seem to be spouting huge amounts of misinformation.

i started with tressa cause i thought she was the cutest and i think shes a great start character shes really useful all round and pretty strong but that was just what i felt.
Cyrus by far. He makes quick work of trash mobs with his AOE spells.

Olbrek is bottom of my list (boring) and Prim just above because revenge storys are meh to me (like her move set but not enough to replace members easily).
Lol you say you prefer a challenge rather than facerolling with the easiest characters then proceed to pick the simplest easiest min/max party as your own, while saying there's no point to choosing Tressa or the apocathary. Choosing them as a main is exactly what would make the game more challenging and interesting.
