Bro. Skyhooks, AC/ DC with Bon Scott and Ted Mulry Gang were rocking Australia in the 70s with these beats. And he was And Still is a Aussie Rock Star before the TV shows. RIP Shirl.
Jon & Dolly if you want to see how good of a singer “Shirl” was then you should check out “Shirley Strachan soundcheck - Living In The 70’s (Live 1988). He is so casual, he just walks on stage, hand in pockets and wearing thongs, belts out the song for a soundcheck then casually walks off again. Just a brilliant voice and talent. RIP Shirl the Curl.
Thongs, by the way, are Aussie footwear, not underwear, although I wouldn't be surprised if Shirl wore the underwear variety. Check out Shirl's neighbourhood- a kid's tv show from the 80's. Not really for kids, it was for the adults having to suffer through kids shows.
Any Aussies here remember the old Rock and roll estedford that high schools used to perform in? My hight school done this song and after the estedford mental as anything played a gig it was fantastic
A lot of Skyhooks early songs were filled with double entendres and were also Melbourne suburban based. This song is very late in their career after original bassist Red Symons had left the group. Their earlier stage presence and costumes made them stand out from the crowd during Australia’s great Pub Rock scene.
@Johnny1p5 Finch- Thunderbird is a great album, sadly it never really got the respect it deserved, Crystal Country Gorge is a great song. Finch were never the same after Bob left.
I remember seeing them live and they sung this song as an encore and the song was so loud I couldn’t hear for days. But man what a fantastic concert full of energy
Graeme "Shirley" Strachan was lead singer of Aussie band Skyhooks. They were a leading Melbourne band with a unique style which loosely fitted into Glam rock genre. Many of their songs were based around local places and culture. As the 70's ended the bands popularity faded. Shirley had a job on a kids TV show, then on a home renovation program (he was a trade qualified carpenter as well). Shirl was a very personable and friendly guy who was very popular. The band's lead guitar Red Symonds went on to be a successful breakfast radio host. Shirl was killed in a helicopter accident. The bass player Greg Macainsh is a board member of the Australian Performing Rights Association and is an intellectual property lawyer. The entire band was very talented and unique.
My Dad went to Uni with them in Melbourne. I used to watch Shirl's Neighbourhood when I was a kid and I remember Claude the Crow making me laugh. RIP Shirl.
Just to let you know... In the original film clip (not this one) It was filmed at around 2 am because that was the only time everyone was available. It was also filmed in one take and the last 7 "Women in Uniform" phrases were sung in ONE breath. We here in Australia miss Shirl😪
They rocked. How about a take on The Angels with “am I ever gonna see your face again”. A live version…. Or the masters apprentices living in a child’s dream
Shirl did this album and then left the band to host. Shirls Neighbourhood. Skyhooks and Shirl would reunite in 1983 for a Massive national tour of Australia
So sad that Shirl died when he did. This could have been there best song.. I saw them live in 1974 in a relatively small venue (it was a pub in an Adelaide suburb) one week after their first album "Living in the 70s" was released. They blew the roof off the place. The outfits were a lot more colourful than here.
Shirl left Skyhooks not long after this. Then he hosted Shirls Neighbourhood. Then returned to skyhooks in the 80s. He had a few solo hits while also in the band in the 70s
one of the guitarists is Red Symons is well known in australia ,he used to appear on a show called Hey Hey its Saturday he done a bit on the show called Red Faces check it out was really funny at times and creative
Ar the time of his unfortunate passing, Shirl was a presenter on a lifestyle program as the carpenter, which is what he worked as before becoming a singer for skyhooks. Main thing is, he really only wanted to spend his time surfing, byt did so.much more multi-faceted things. Totally talented and reportedly he was a genuinely nice person.
About time Skyhooks had some coverage 🥸 Since hearing their track "Horror Movie" on the 1977 "New Wave" compilation album I have been a fan, and managed to get most of their albums from Australia. I recommend checking out more of their tunes.
Kiss listed Skyhooks as one of their influences. AC/DC are contemporary of Skyhooks. Skyhooks were banned on radio and T.V. at various times and Shirl's move from Skyhooks to Kid's T.V. was protested because of their on-stage antics... things like urinating off the stage into the crowd as one example. The lyrics of their songs being another. Listen to their song "SMUT" then compare it to thir song "Blue Jeans" to see how gifted they were as well as crass! Aussie Pub Rock is awesome.
Always sang this in Melbourne to the female coppers on traffic/point duty in the CBD. We'd stand on the footpath and sing it to them as they controlled traffic. Some saw it as funny, other's didn't 🤣oh to be 17 again.
Also he was a carpenter before and after Skyhooks fame, did a home improvement/renovation show for a while, killed in a helicopter crash. Imants "Freddie" Strauks on drums.
I saw them live over a dozen times, and met freddie and greg on the street in Kalgoorlie when they were touring in the eighties on there Juke box in siberia comeback
Great fun Aussie band in the 1970s...Sadly the singer Shirl died tragically while flying his chopper, witnesses claim to have seen him flying the chopper upsidedown shortly before it crashed...R.I.P. Shirl.
Are God Skyhooks what a great Australian band. They just give everyone the bird and the public love them. Their first Albums Living In The 70's had 6 out of the 10 song band on the radio for sex or drug references. Red Simons can't remember what guitar he played but had a talent segment on TV's show Hay Hay, it's Saturday called Redfaces, where he tried to be the dignified person, all I could remember was he once wrote and sang a song called Smut about masturbating in a picture theatre. All their song would be fine on radio today.
Shirl left the Skyhooks in 1978, and started a kid’s show called ‘Shirl’s Neighbourhood’ in 1979. Skyhooks tried another lead singer, but their popularity dwindled and they soon disbanded. Shirl’s tv career also didn’t last long. Skyhooks reformed in 1989, with Shirl back as the lead singer, and released a song called ‘Jukebox in Siberia’. They were huge in Australia in the mid to late seventies, and their biggest hits were: ‘Living in the Seventies’, ‘Horror Movie’ and ‘Ego is not a dirty word’
So the thing with Skyhooks, they were really on the way out when this song came out. It was their last hit. It is by far the rockiest thing they ever put out. If you want to see this band in its prime you need to give songs like Ego, Horror Movie, and my personal favorite Baldwin Calling a spin. They have a bunch of other great tracks like 'Smut' which would probably get you banned from TH-cam lol. Strachan left Skyhooks in 78. Did that kids show from the next 4 or 5 years. Then did a lifestyle show in the mid 90s
Shirl didnt start his tv career until the eighties after the band retired. But you must check out Million dollar riff by skyhooks its better than Women in Uniform.

RIP Shirl.
RIP Shirl. Such a warm and talented man. Never be forgotten
Yes RIP shirl great talent
Shirl was a lovely, naturally funny soul with an amazing voice that died tragically too soon.
RIP Shirl the curl. We miss you.

Yes, that performance is amazing!
@@MargaretGuppy yes wasn’t it Margaret and just so effortless
Yep...Brilliant raw footage & he kicks it it the d!ck 🎤👍♥️

Finally.. Someone's reacting to one of my all time favourite Aussie Hits..
Kudos.
Shirley Graham Strachan killed in a helicopter crash on Mt Archer in Queensland , totally Australian . I was 16 when this was on im now 62
RIP shirl ya deadset legend of epic Aussie culture! Skyhooks has some of the most catchy songs ever!
Shirl was later a presenter on a lifestyle programme using his carpentary background in DIY segments, he had a few solo songs too
Any Aussies here remember the old Rock and roll estedford that high schools used to perform in?
My hight school done this song and after the estedford mental as anything played a gig it was fantastic
RIP Greedy 💔
Yeah my school won a few of them. Loved the eistefords! Is yours on youtube?
ours was in the 80's so I don't think so

Yes, same era. Good times.

Their earlier stage presence and costumes made them stand out from the crowd during Australia’s great Pub Rock scene.
Red was one of the guitarists not bass , he was replaced by Bob Spencer of Finch, the one with the glasses.
Red never played bass
@Johnny1p5 Finch- Thunderbird is a great album, sadly it never really got the respect it deserved, Crystal Country Gorge is a great song.

She is absolutely gorgeous! You're right.
You must must check out Shirl doing a sound check for Skyhooks performing Living in the 70s…Amazing performance for a sound check.

Iron Maiden did a cover of this song with their first singer and a music vid along with it. Definitely check it out.
I think it was an early early cover too. I have it on my Visions Of The Beast dvd that goes from then to Brave New World.
Yes I heard that years ago and from memory was a brilliant cover
I never had any idea that was a cover until now.
Kiss listed Skyhooks as one of their influences. AC/DC are contemporary of Skyhooks. Aussie Pub Rock is awesome.
The "outro" as you call it is supose to be akin to a vinyl record jumping track. RIP Shirl Oh and a gong for RED
Always sang this in Melbourne to the female coppers on traffic/point duty in the CBD. We'd stand on the footpath and sing it to them as they controlled traffic. Some saw it as funny, other's didn't 🤣oh to be 17 again.
Check out 'You Just Like Me Coz Im Good Im Bed'
This was from the album "Living in the 70s". About half of the songs from that album were banned on radio.
wasn't on that album.
Guys, you should check out Skyhooks Horror Movie, another of there big hits
My favourite Skyhooks song.
Also he was a carpenter before and after Skyhooks fame, did a home improvement/renovation show for a while, killed in a helicopter crash.
Imants "Freddie" Strauks on drums.
Another terrific Australian talent.
My favourite band in the 70’s…saw them live twice
Rip shirl
I saw them live over a dozen times, and met freddie and greg on the street in Kalgoorlie when they were touring in the eighties on there Juke box in siberia comeback
Living in the seventies ALBUM,THE BEST,😂😂😂😉⏰
The whole album is brilliant
If you love this, you'd probably love some of Skyhooks earlier stuff, like Living in the 70's and Ego.
Used to surf with Shirl the curl as we called him down at Phillip Island. A funny dude on and off stage.
Great band and great reaction 👌
I got Aussie Bands to refer to you no one else can :) I am an Aussie musician.
3rd year high school when this came out. Wasn't into Skyhooks myself but they had some good songs.
Wonderful band!
A couple of great Skyhooks songs are Million Dollar Riff, This is my City, and Blue Jeans.
You guys should look into the back story of the "Wiggles" if you think think Shirl's transition into kids show host was strange
Shirl was also a TV carpenter.
Shirl was a musician and singer of Skyhooks for MANY years before being a TV kids show host...
RIP Shirl. I use to watch Shirls Neighbourhood. He can definitely sing. 🎉
Shirl is just super talented , Skyhooks were an awesome Aussie band
Yep Shirl the curl I was 10 years old then
Great fun Aussie band in the 1970s...Sadly the singer Shirl died tragically while flying his chopper, witnesses claim to have seen him flying the chopper upsidedown shortly before it crashed...R.I.P. Shirl.
Love it! Easily The ‘hooks best song. RIP Shirl.

He was in kids show in 80s and band in 70s
One of the alltimers!
jukebox in siberia...one of Skyhooks big songs
Shirl left the Skyhooks in 1978, and started a kid’s show called ‘Shirl’s Neighbourhood’ in 1979. Skyhooks tried another lead singer, but their popularity dwindled and they soon disbanded. RIP Shirl, a great Aussie
Not so strange, some of the members of The Cockroaches left and formed The Wiggles.
Shirl the Curl one of the best Hard Rock voices ever Million Dollar Riff is another one to have lidten to
So the thing with Skyhooks, they were really on the way out when this song came out. It was their last hit. It is by far the rockiest thing they ever put out. Great Aussie band! I believe Iron Maiden covered this song too.
Smut,is a banger😂😂😂😉⏰
You guys need to watch the Live in 80's stuff from Skyhooks.
Million Dollar Riff is a must.
Believe it or not, but Iron Maiden used to play this in the late 70’s. They even made a music video. Check it out!
Ozzy GOLD
The sample at the beginning is exactly the same sample Kanye uses for his song Jesus Walks.
Hmmm, fictionally, at the end of the Van Halen "Hot For Teacher" video, David Lee Roth went on to be a game show host. 😉
Australia. Telling truths et al. Enjoy
RIP Shirl. BTW early Iron Maiden did a cover. I prefer the ‘Hooks original
Shirl was a great carpenter.
Listen to jukeboxes in siberia
Shirly neighbourhood was the show was full time gig
Iron Maiden has a great cover of this song
Shirl was carpenter & John Farnham was a plumber.
I like women in uniform
Shirl didnt start his tv career until the eighties after the band retired. But you must check out Million dollar riff by skyhooks its better than Women in Uniform.
And a helicopter pilot
In later years they dressed up and had make up on like kiss did
iron madien covered this song
Classic...where was Red, not that I missed him, it was better without him.
Back in the day you could of seen these guys and other great bands at your local, pokies "slots" ruined the live music scene
americans always late to the event ww1 ww2 real rock and roll OZ style
The pre-Bruce Dickinson version of Iron Maiden released a version of this song in about 1980. It's nowhere near as good as the original.
