Builds Quonset bunkers for a living. Lives in Dome Home in the woods

- David builds underground Quonset huts, so when he saw a rundown Monolithic Dome for sale, he bought it and began rebuilding it into a custom home for himself. Built from steel-reinforced concrete with polyurethane foam insulation, the framework is disaster-proof and highly insulated (R-80).
Built to be entirely off-grid, with solar panels, batteries, and a propane washer/dryer, it is very affordable to heat during the wet and cold of the Pacific Northwest winter and stays cool even during summertime heat waves.
- Check David's work building Quonset bunkers: • Building Bunker Villa ...
While the exterior was zombie-proof, the interior was mostly a blank canvas with a cement floor and a large open space. David designed a curving serpent wall to frame a round bedroom. Using 24-foot-long beams-the maximum length from a local mill-he set the room’s size and the exposed-wood bedroom ceiling and the floor of the office above it.
As an experienced carpenter, David works on his home at night and on weekends, so it’s a long-term build that he can tailor as he lives in it and finds new needs.

Thank you for coming to visit the Dome Home with your family, I love the production of the video. We'll continue to share updates on our channel as they happen, along with other videos to do with other projects, etc! Take care and hope to have you visit for an update one day !
What is the plan for the Hobbit houses you want to build? Guest houses for family and friends? Airbnb? Just for fun? The house looks beautiful by the way.
Greetings from Canada:
Thanks for sharing your most incredible home. You’re truly a master craftsman.
I may have missed it - what is the diameter of this dome?
@josephhoward8735 Great point ! It is 52 Ft
Thank you for sharing your story with the audience; it’s quite challenging to do partitions within half a sphere and you make it look easy; looking forward to seeing the rest of the work you were about to finish when we visited.
I wish more contractors would be willing to build homes like this.
Another awesome episode! Thanks Kirsten & crew!
That dome looks so much bigger inside than it does outside. Great work so far. Can't wait to see the finished product.
Seems like a magic trick with how much bigger it looks on in the inside
Thanks Kirsten and family for this tour. Its so good to know these people and places exist.Salute to this hospitable gentleman.
I live in a self built geodesic dome we started in 1980. Very efficient. Very comfortable and flexible with many possibilities for interior designs. I love mine.
Really enjoyed the thought process and the addition of his video showing the completed spare bedroom and couch. Another great video Kirsten.
That sliding door gave me crush vibes on this Carpenter....excellent!!!...the curved sliding door too...can't even handle how awesome this is
This guy is absolutely brilliant with his thoughts of designs
Thank you ! Wait till you see the Dome once it is all finished !
I can't wait to see it finished...so inspired!!! Love how you taught us of the frequencies...you got me day dreaming!@@VikingShelters
I like David's style. I remember watching his last featured video on your channel. Lots of novel solutions, and creativity on display. Great inspiration.
Not to mention his plan to make a hobbit village.
I honestly don't understand why more homes don't take advantage of the fact that the temperature doesn't fluctuate much beyond 65 under the frostline. There should be a network of underground communities in places above sea level. Hobbits and ants know what is up
That gem of information regarding the sound recording is absolutely fascinating.
A fabulous abode. I love his design process...definitely inspired by Yah.
Praise Yah
Monolithic domes, like this, are the best kind (made from a one piece shell of concrete). They are extremely strong, very insulated (with foam), and not prone to leaking. The problem with Geodesic domes is all the seams where the triangles meet. Eventually, these seams may leak.
I’m typically a very linear person and struggle with curves unless they are do e very well. This is incredible- it’s curved but still clean looking and less “artsy/whimsical” - I’m in love
Really great. I could love living there, especially as a retirement home for two.
That half circle couch looks perfect from the balcony view!
Have always admired dome homes. Have been to Monolithic Dome Homes in Italy, Texas twice.
When he could hear the people talking in the corner, that is the Whispering Gallery effect, due to curvature of the structure of the dome
Amazing artist and person, thank you for filming this! ❤❤❤
What a great Dome. I like what he has done with the in side. The door upstairs is awesome. Thanks for sharing his home. I
really like his idea of the Hobbit village.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🌺
He has got a-lot of talent. The palm trees made with the light blue plaster is a perfect touch.
Dave has great vision and vibes. Love his idea for a hobbit home village!!
Ahhh...curvi-linear architecture always been my absolute favourite. Thanks Kirsten - really loved his take & response to living in a curved space
There is a huge dome in upstate New York .
Just past Woodstock, it was the film critic, Judith Crist ..
My mom used to clean for her , she lived in the city , but
The dome was her country home.. I’ve got fond memories of her
big parties with the likes of Woody Allen , and Marlin Brando ..
As a kid it was just another party…..
Cool house, google it ❤
So neat to see how he is working with those curves to bring practical function and beauty together. Such an interesting house!
From the outside, it didn’t look like much, but inside it is magnificent!
This guy is brilliant!!
NIce job. I would like to see more dome and underground houses. Thanks for the work you are doing.
Oh and I love the dome colour and the "blisters", gives the dome a post appocolypse feeling to it❤❤❤❤
Just wondering how the drainage works as the rain water comes off the structure and that it sits on the bottom of a slope. Very cool house.
This is a seriously cool house created by a creative and amazing person!
Very beautiful..... love the semi-circular sofa.
This is such a beautiful interior!!
Interesting, it seems so much bigger on the inside than the outdoor view reveals. Nice wood beams. Would be great to revisit once it is all done.👍
I really liked his underground Quonset Hut.
Thanks for continually bringing us such great content.
great house, didn't expect to be so big this guy knows what to do
My cat was watching with me. He was trying to look around the corners. He wants to explore it! 😸
Yea for Domes! Love the stability and gorgeous curves!
I absolutely LOVE this dome home. I'd love to have a tour..I'll be in NoCal wwoofing over the summer and would love to meet this innovative man.
I love this house!
You are an artist 🎨 and an architect mate. Greetings from Greece 🇬🇷.
I also live in a dome home! Mine is a 50 foot diameter monolithic institute’s dome and half buried on the north side. It’s very energy efficient but we are not off grid. I’d love to chat some time!
Glad she got to do your own dome home, David. You probably have a couple other designs you did that could be showcased on her channel, too. You have unique solutions.
Stunning! Great house, great episode again! Thank you!
Gorgeous! Thank you for sharing!😊
I Love it so much more than the underground bunker. Great designs Ty for sharing
This guy is an artist.
I loved this episode! I have always wanted to build a dome home. Thank you!
🤗 THANKS KIRSTEN,VIKING HOMES YOUR HOME HAS SO MANY GREAT IDEAS 💡💡💡, AND YOUR WORK IS MUCH MORE CLEVER TOO 🧐 I LOVE ❤️ A DOME HOME AND BEING OFF GRID 🤗😎💚💚💚
Very Cool Dome Home.
The Hobit village will be an Awesome addition to the property.
I love the bunker feel to a home.
I Love This Dome Home & Hope I can own 1 in the future. It feels so Comfy/Cozy. Thanks Again for Sharing❤
Very cool! Thanks so much for sharing this one.
Love the house and future dreams.
WOW.... I am not easily pleased, but love it.
Wow! I really love domes! Keep them coming! Also curious about the hobbit homes.
Beautiful design. What a talented gift to have.
Really beautiful on the inside, his property and location are so very nice. Practical and efficient.
That dome needs more blisters of various sizes to give it a more organic look.
Love the dome home concept......I hope you revisit this place once the Hobbit village is completed.
Very creative he is highly skilled.
I love how the updates have been edited in! A lovely dome home. It felt good. And looks good too. Can’t wait to see the Hobbit Village.
Pretty amazing build. Can’t wait to see his hobbit homes once they’re built and hope you go back for another video to show us. 😊
Will definitely be visiting when he builds more.
I will be ready to live in one of his! 5 years is perfect 👌
Skilled craftsman
Thanks for another great video! I've wanted to have a place like this for a long time. Or underground, or carved out of the side of a cliff,... etc. LOL
Your channel helps me keep that dream alive, and inspired to keep working towards it.
Another masterful presentation Kirsten! Thank you so much for your channel.
Looks cozy.
I love this guy, so creative
I also live in an unfinished geodesic dome home. It's a 50' and a 20' diameter three story wood dome structure.
Man oh man, loved this design and build, one of the best you guys have reviewed for a while. Loved the internal balconies of the dome.
Wow- a pretty cool aesthetic. The curved stairways look lovely though I always wonder how you get things upstairs but I am sure that this guy can figure anything out.
Brilliant!
Awesome artist and build! Thank you.
Beautiful house, very nice!
ENJOYED IT!!!
Love it!
good episode
Awesome design, balanced space in a unique way.
Those acoustics happen in Grand Central Station too!
I would love a dome home.
Use a cable to open the balcony door from the left instead of leaning out. Lots of mechanical animations on folding sliding door mechanisms running around.
What is the diameter of this dome? Seems like a very good size.
52 feet
This thing is amazing, Nice work
Thats a lot of work. 👏
I wonder what he plans to do with the 10 the Hobbit houses that he wants to build. Airbnb? Guest houses for friends and family? Simply for fun?
Thank you for one more Artis Dome . Love It ! I got little money . Want this man to build it , yea ? You could use epoxy paint on the outside of the dome .
Great place very inspiring, it must be wonderful to be able to create your own home and living space in this way, also love the spaciousness within and some connected to the height of the roof.
Barn doors make me cry
Loved the tour , be good to see his hobbit houses , I just saw an amazing tour of those in my country NewZealand yesterday ❤️🙏🇳🇿🇳🇿
You got to love Curves as fitting straight things into it is hard!! Solar panels look in shade??
The dome appears much larger inside than the outside profile would suggest.
Great place. Wonderful.
cool dome, awesome guy!
I'd love to learn how you build those the exterior structure or get some plan
Monolithic daught orghe.
3:32 THOSE DOORS!
r80 that's amazing! how thick are the walls? and where did he locate? what part of the world is he in Kirsten/Nicolás?
Pacific Northwest
@@kirstendirksen sorry how thick were the walls? the dome exoskeleton? i'm curious to know detail how his spray foam achieved r80 ! i don't recall you or he mentioning it in the video... since i am looking at 32" thick walls with a r150 goal i really wanna know!
thanks kirsten/nicolás :)
The most interesting man in the world! 😎
Hahaha 😆
Thanks again Kirsten + Team. What will your children do later; build or buy? Buy the way any Underwater Houses since the Jacques-Yves Cousteau era?
keep the blisters
More blisters would be cool.
