Am I the only one who wonders what happened to her family? As far as I've heard, the maniac regime of north korea would punish the family if defectors enslaving them for life and for 3 generations on prison camps.

I've been watching North Korean vids the whole evening and now I can't help but feel sorry for its citizens.
Then you need to go look up the history of the two Koreas and get educated.

I am currently reading her book. I was born the same month and same year as Hyeonseo. Its sad to have to live your life in constant fear of being watched and tattle neighbors whose allegations can ruin your entire life. This book has made me appreciate the freedoms that I have as a American. With all of the college campus protests and petty grievances, its time to take a step back and humble ourselves to the gifts we have as a nation that allows us to move freely without suspicion.

GrandAdan her family sent her to live with relatives in china. she says in on ted talk.
She crossed the border in order to meet her relatives in China, but mostly because she was simply just curious for the outside world. Bear in mind that there are a lot of foreign goods that are smuggled into North Korea, such as South Korean music and tv shows. Of course it's illegal to own them but they can always bribe someone to keep their mouth shut.

The interviewer lady looks fine, a bit tense or stiff maybe but that could just be her posture. She is doing what any good host/interviewer should do, ask the relevant questions then let the guest talk, Charlie Rose would do the same. Hyeonseo Lee is quite wonderful and I am proud to have her in the USA, proud to have her out in the free world wherever she may go.
Honestly don’t know why they keep replacing the bits where the interviewer asks questions with words on a blank screen. Feels more natural if they just show both of them having a conversation.

What make her think of the idea of escaping from North Korea if she initially believed that they were living happily and that the whole world is the same situation as in North Korea? what make she escaped in the first place?

Honestly, most of people from North Korea are much more naturally beautiful than any of their neighbors countries . I believe they don't have any plastic surgery clinics there. The women are naturally beautiful. You can see it from the documentary videos or something.

because of the famine when she found out her relatives are actually dying for the first time. She probably didn't know what death or starvation is, besides killing americans. no one told her
