  • Shelling corn with an old IHC 1-hole hand cranked sheller. Here I try to show how an old corn shelling machine works and then demonstrate its operation. Yes, you could install a belt pulley on the flywheel side and run these machines with a gas engine. And having a 2nd person helping to feed the ears makes things go faster. One of these days I'll tear the sheller down and clean and repaint it so it looks better, but for now it works well and that's the important part.

My mom has had one of these sitting on her front porch for years and I finally decided to try to restore it for her. Her model doesn't have the blower feature on it, so it might make it easier on me. But it's missing the hopper, handle, and cross pieces for the feet. But it also has a tip at the end of the shaft that I assume is for hooking it up to a motor. I need to do a lot more research on this to be sure I fix it right. I really appreciate this video!

We have this same machine. I used to put walnuts down it when I was a small child. I do remember seeing ours working off a tractor once, but that was long ago. I haven't seen the machine in years but my dad says he still has it. I think I'm going to check it out during my next visit.

I looked a long time for mine. I ended up buying one at auction that was nearly gone. I rebuild the iron and made a complete new box for it.
They are a fascinating bit of equipment. A motor is a nice touch. If I ever get the chance I want to pick up one of the hit and miss engines.

I remember one of these in my grandparents chicken barn, I believe it was bigger but it's been 50 years. I think Dad told me he had to turn the crank a lot when he was younger or until about "52" when they bought the "Farmall Cub Cadet" and ran it of the PTO. Different life back then!

very neat old machine. i have an 1890's corn sheller but it doesnt have a feed tray. its one ear at a time so its slower but works just as well. its one of the old cast iron ones.

My grandpa had one. I use a cast iron small deal. I need one of those much less chaff and a lot faster and smoother. Nice video

I had a friend who lived on farm and they had one of those. We shucked a few ears and were told never to touch it. Then a chain with a lock appeared on it. Apparently these are notorious finger and hand grinders.

I found our sheller. It was buried, but I have moved enough stuff I can get to it and test things out. It actually does have the fan, but the belt is missing and the fan is frozen solid. A little oil will get that going, but I'll need a belt as well. The only other problem, besides a lot of rust, is a screw that fastens the crank appears to be missing and the crank just slides loosely around the shaft, but I was able to spin everything by the flywheel and it will work! I hope to get it pulled out even further so I can take a better look at it while I'm still here.

For the belt, you can just use the rubber band from an old 5 gallon bucket lid. Make sure to put a figure 8 twist in it.

Nice video! I have one of these I.H. corn shellers I use, only feeding one horse, but mix the shelled corn with oats and store bought 12% sweet feed. Also have a New Idea sheller, but it doesn't work nearly as good as the I.H.

For a small operation, that's really efficient! If you built a bigger hopper you could really go to town.

Thanks for showing how it worked and what is inside of a sheller, I have never seen one, what was the dry corn used for? corn meal? surely you didn't hand process all of your corn crop for seed or feed?

My Dad had one of these on our farm when I was a kid in the 50's - 60's... I had fun with it then!.... I am "farming" now on 2.5 acres and would like one again! I want to play with growing heirloom corn and save seed for the next year... My Quwstion is... Will this model shell and clean the corn without damaging the kernal? So it will be free of damage to grow as seed next year?? Thanks!

I never bother with husking the corn if still has a husk on it. . . . It seems to make no difference at all with my older sheller. . . The sheller in one of my videos is turning at 200 RPM on the flywheel. . . Mine was considered obsolete long before your was built. . . Check it out.
