A timeless classic for every midlife crisis
This and road to nowhere
Nailed my mood 👍
I don't think this song is about midlife crises. You can be any age and realize the absurd reality the vast majority of us have been forced into since probably the mid 20th century. Just utterly thoughtless and selfish, placated with sugary meals and entertainment. Joy redefined as acquiring a bigger TV or car or house. Made to believe life is only about pursuing short term joys and endless comfort.
@@M00SE414yes. The realisation that our lives are futile. Lived on the hamster wheel of a rich man's exploitation.
@arandorapress7561 Life isn't futile. The rich would like you to think that. Life is a mystery. We should it explore it. We should learn and teach other. And many, many people do. But there is a lot to overcome. Most people are busy trying to survive the exploitation. Add in the commercial conditioning, the distrust we are fed, and the distractions of entertainment, it seems bleak. But it only takes a few moments of beauty to show someone there is more to life than what we are led to believe.
I hope I don't sound aggressive. I don't blame people for being nihilists given the dystopian state of things and past decades that have led us here. But I also don't think that outlook is doing anyone any favors. The system breaks down if the components don't work. The rich need us nihilistic and hedonistic and hyper-individualistic and a bunch of other "-ics" because in these states we've given in and accepted the idea that life is only to serve some selfish purpose.

the kind of song that only comes once in a lifetime
Fr its amazing
This is one of those songs that you hear when you're young.
You like it.
You may love it.
It's catchy.
But then someday you get a little older and you're listening to it one day and you realize just how incredible this song is.
And then you start watching more Talking Heads stuff and then you realize that you were right there in the 80s when this dropped.
And you realize that you didn't fully appreciate them.
And you realize that it's just because you're old and stuff means different things to you and that your perspective shifts greatly across your life.
Then you just sit back and ponder life.
I was there.
Then I was in another place.
Then I was somewhere else.
Now I'm here.
Where will I be next?
Where will I be next?
Thanks, Talking Heads.
You beautiful artists.
You NAILED it! Wonderfully stated.
100% agree
Great post that mate. Nailed it
At 9 years old I somehow heard this as the inevitable quarter and midlife crisis I saw coming that was utterly powerless to stop hitting me like a tsunami, but I'm somehow still standing, and it scares me to this day
What a pretentious comment 😆
That was literally my exact experience lol
And you may find yourself... replaying this song on loop.

Are you a Gen Z kid?
I agree. And the song is far better than the video.
The "same as it ever was" theme is PERFECTLY alluded to in the bass line. What really bends your ear is that through the verses and chorus's the bassline does not change one bit. It supports the I in the verses and inverted it supports the V in the choruses. I'm sure that is a Brian Eno move and it's just pure absolute genius!!
Guess you could say the bass line is the same as it ever was
Yeah because Brian Eno played bass on the track and wrote the song.
Eno loves those kind of loops. He didn't play the bass, but likely played around with a loop of it.
This is Tina on bass.

Same bruh, you got this, King
The Cathartic Heads, yes; you're right!
Keep your head up. GOD bless you, bro.
Same, this song touches on so many different things and moves me so far emotionally. I always tell people that it's profound and has a ton of meaning, when they ask me what it is I always say "listen to it and tell me."
when the days come around
I literally just bought. “Shack”.
A small farmhouse with a big porch overlooking a beautiful flowing river.
I was 16 when this dropped and I had it on vinyl and 8 track. I listened to this song hundreds if not thousand times back then.
40 years later and listening to it after a long time,……I realize it’s my life’s anthem and the fact that I just bought a “shack” on a river to watch the water flow by is not lost on me for one minute.
Life is a wonderful experience…….go get your “shack” !
Brilliant. Enjoy your “shack”. I hope I end up owning one. 😊
Tina Wentworth’s bass play is absolutely awesome.
Wentworth is a town in England.WEYMOUTH is also a town in England. However, only the second one is also the bass player in Talking Heads!.
"Remain in Light" is one of those albums that just never stops rocking. Every single song is perfect. Brian Eno, David Byrne, and the rest of the gang cooked up something special with this.
Never gets old.

Best album they ever did and they made some greats.
This year is 2024, but I don't feel old-fashioned about this song even now. It's really amazing.
Suffering from bipolar disorder and owning one of the best restaurants in my town, sometimes this song goes through my head after a good manic episode.

I smile every time I hear this song.
I always see the music video in front of me even if it's not there, so catchy it is.

What an amazing and unique track! I love the intro - it feels like a culmination of all the elements that the Talking Heads are known for, fused into one cohesive song. It makes me wish I could travel back in time and experience the magic of the 70's and 80's.

And you may find yourself
Living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself
In another part of the world
And you may find yourself
Behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house
With a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, well
How did I get here?
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground
And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?

HEY MARIA
I recently went on a cruise in the Caribbean and I had this song on one of my playlists. I had this song on repeat so many times walking around the ships. It fit so well on the deck with the waves washing up on the ship, even during night. It felt so good walking around inside as well, it felt moving, fast and happy. This is one of my favorite songs because of that cruise.
Here’s a fun challenge for you and your friends: try listening to this song the entire way through without smiling at all.
Or bobbin your head lol
Challenge level: impossible. 😂😂😂
Or without ripping the bong

As a upper middle class man at the time this came out I could relate to this tune. As an old fart I truly miss those days gone by
I will never forget the feeling i had when i heard this song for the first time. Something clicked in me. What to do in my life. What not to do. Now, 40 years later it still brings a tear to my eyes. Once in a lifetime.....

A song about the futility of every day life and being stuck in a middle class loop. A very nihilistic song presented in a very entertaining and creative manner.

No you can I hear this song about 7 to 9 times a day at work
HI

Guilty: I just listened to this 5 times straight...and dont feel bad about it.
Dixit David Byrne about the lyrical inspiration behind this piece : “Most of the words in ‘Once in a Lifetime’ [1980] come from evangelists I recorded off the radio while taking notes and picking up phrases I thought were interesting directions. Maybe I’m fascinated with the middle class because it seems so different from my life, so distant from what I do. I can’t imagine living like that.”
A myriad of musicians cite “Once in a Lifetime” as ONE OF THE BEST SONGS EVER RECORDED❗️
Among those people :
Charlotte Church, who named it the first song she fell in love with : “The first time I heard it, my mind was blown. There’s magic in that song. I think David Byrne is an absolute G.”
Nick Fieldman of Wang Chung, who loves the “almost randomly cacophonous keyboard burblings, the wonderful bass line and rhythm section groove and David Byrne’s slightly preacher-like vocals.”
Glen Balard,, who produced and co-wrote hits for the likes of Alanis Morissette, Dave Matthews and Aerosmith, stated : “That song can’t be touched. I listen to it like once a month because everything about it is so perfect.”
A MASTERPIECE BY A MASTERMIND‼️ 💎🎶💎

Often when I listen to music, I will focus on different parts of a song.
This bass line is the same four notes, all the way through, never changes.
But all the other instruments around the bass give the feeling it's a changing bass line.
Blows my mind.
Still legendary 💕💕💕 🎶

Ok so I’ve always liked the outro sure but today I was in a mall-like place with that part of the song playing and it just struck me… that’s mindblowingly good… like imagine if they decided not to go with that outro/did something else. I played the outro over and over on the way home… I’m in tears. How is that sound being made? Is it feedback mixed with a synth? The outro elevates this song from a truly excellent song to masterpiece.
And then a twister comes. Here comes the twister.
