    @jerryalder2878 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +12

    Thangham Debbonaire will be elevated to the House of Lords soon and will continue being arrogant and incapable of accepting any responsibility for her defeat. The new constituency of Bristol Central is a slightly smaller Bristol West. Debbonaire had a huge majority at the 2019 GE and one of the biggest CLPs in England. Suspensions of members and disillusionment with Starmer resulted in the hollowing out of the CLP. In the May 2021 local elections only three Labour councillors remained within the boundary of Bristol West as the rest were Green. This should have been one of the safest Labour seats in the country. At the recent local elections the last three Labour seats within the boundary of Bristol West also went Green. If Thangham had been defending her seat using the old boundary of Bristol West she would have had an even worse result. The council wards of Easton and Lawrence Hill have substantial Muslim communities but are now within the revised boundary of Bristol East. A huge Gaza ceasefire demonstration had assembled in Easton to march to the city centre. There was no official Labour presence on that march. As regards Bristol East the Labour vote at the general election was much reduced with the Greens coming in second. Within the new boundary of Bristol East there are three Labour councillors, two LibDems , two tories and nine Greens. Maybe this will cause concern for Labour MP Kerry Mccarthy.

    All any of them need to do is show a belief in the rule of law. The laws of this country AND international law.. They love to complicate this, but its really simple - conduct your foreign policy within the law.

    Labour didn't lose Bristol Central because of Gaza.
    Bristol has been swinging Green for years, and Debonaire only got in in '17 and '19 because the Green support lent Labour its votes to shore up the anti-Tory bloc.

    I think dropping the 28 billion climate change target and the general shift of Labour to the centre right when Bristol is pretty progressive and leftwing was much more behind her loss in Bristol Central. I expect Gaza was a factor for some but I’d guess the other two were larger factors for more people. And I live in Bristol Central and did a day of campaigning for the Greens. Green won by over 10,000 votes too so it wasn’t a close run thing.

    It's 5 pro-Gaza independents, you forgot Jeremy Corbyn. On Gaza and many other issues Plaid Cymru (4 MPs) and the SNP (9) have the same position, so that's 22 altogether. At least 4 Labour MPs will vote against their whip if there's such a vote again, probably a couple more. So the total could get to 30.

    One of the big decision points in the polling booth is: which of these candidates do I want to email if I need the support of my MP? Thangam needs to deal with the fact that Bristol Central thinks they'd get a better response from Carla and she'd be more likely to raise a question in the house. They didn't want YA centrist Starmerite. Gaza is an emotive issue, but so is climate change. Debbonaire isn't a bad politician and it was just unfortunate for her that she ended up against Denyer. The Greens landed all four of their target seats, two unseating Tories, with all due respect, this wasn't personal to Debbonaire. She'd get more sympathy if she learned to lose graciously. She lost the election when she ran away from Owen Jones! 🤣

They totally broke democracy just to suit themselves. All of them should be kicked out of government.

    Thangam Debbonaire is such a nasty piece of work. I was in the Labour Women's conference meeting (via Zoom), where we were consolidating the social care policy from all the different proposals from different constituencies into a single policy platform. I and a lot of those other women there noticed that the commitment to providing free social care - which was in every single proposal - had been removed. That was against the rules - Labour head office wasn't supposed to interfere with the policy. We started to raise hell, and referred back to our own versions to point out how it had been removed and that wasn't OK- it was a key thing disabled people wanted to see.
    In comes Thangam, to lecture us about how if we included that promise of free at the point of use social care, it would be just another stick for the Tory press to beat us with. It would cost us the next election! Did we want that on our conscience? Just think of all the other good that a Labour government would do for disabled people, we'd be throwing all that away! Surely we could see that?
    Some argued against her, she just kept repeating that it would be just another stick for the Tory press to beat us with, and would cost us the next election AND IT WOULD BE OUR FAULT. It didn't matter that it was a clear demand that came direct from Disabled People's Organisations. She bullied us all until we dropped our objections to that part. I cried, she sympathised with me like I was a child but told me how it was too big a thing to promise and Labour would lose the next election because of it. It was horrible. I stopped paying my subs and am no longer a Labour Party member.
    (If you want a more contemporaneous account, I did speak to John Pring of the Disability News Service or DNS about it, just search for Thangam Debbonaire DNS & it comes right up)
    So I celebrated somewhat to hear she couldn't get elected, and I am completely unsurprised she's being just as manipulative and untruthful as I know her to be.
