    I am wanting to establish a digital sewing pattern business and be able to draft patterns directly on Adobe Illustrator . What you described on this video was perfect for the stage I am presently at. I will look forward to some more digital pattern making videos from you. Thank you!

      Ginette, thank you so much for your kind words! That's so exciting and a great industry to get into. I'm so glad you found the tutorial helpful. I will definitely be doing more in-depth digital patternmaking videos in the future. :)

    I really enjoy your videos, clear and concise and with a load of new information. I've been pattern cutting and sewing for over 20 years and it's great to see somebody giving out industry relevant information for free...thank you and good luck with your new ventures. (wish you'd been around when i started out!)

      Thank you so much for your kind words! Part of my reason for doing what I do is because I also wish I had this type of resource when I was first starting out. I hope this will help a lot of people! Thank you so much for your support!

    Super helpful video. I’m feeling more confident about digitizing my patterns and making them from scratch in illustrator. Thanks!!!

    Hi, thank you so much for providing all these resources, but I was actually very curious if you could make a video series about doing the pattern making from scratch (using your own take on it and maybe the the resources from Helen Armstrong). I would love an in depth series on it. I have watched so many videos and I'm not sure what is the "right way" to do it. I feel that could be an extremely applicable video for all viewers and may bring more subscribers to your channel. I haven't really found a concise video on youtube explaining why or how the specific measurements are added. I'm not sure what's the correct one and why. Each pattern maker seems to have their own "technique" on adding measurements. I really enjoy your style of teaching. You seem extremely seasoned in the field and I can't wait to keep binge-watching all your well thought out videos!

      Thank you so much for your feedback! I definitely would love to show a more in depth walkthrough of how I create and manipulate patterns. My plan is to dive more in-depth as time goes on so that I can really expand into the technicalities of each part of technical design. I am planning to show some more patternmaking as a part of my new vlog series that will be on my channel here on TH-cam!

    This video is very helpful! I am wondering how you would go about setting up printing in the "cut the edge and glue" way that I see in many Indie Patterns. This isn't like what you showed, where you'd essentially draw in the line that isn't printed at the edges. I'd love a video on it or if you could send me to a blog post :). Thanks for all you have shared!

    • @POINTSofMEASURE
      @POINTSofMEASURE  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Melissa, thank you so much for your question! Essentially what you would do is cut the pattern pieces apart to fit the printer page size. I like to use a shape to make sure that everything is lined up (like a star for example). I mention this method at the end of this article: www.pointsofmeasure.com/tutorials-education/the-basics-of-patternmaking - The reason I prefer to do it the way that is outlined in this video is because there is less room for error because your only variable is the paper size which is already highly regulated to only vary by a fraction of a millimeter. When cutting and lining up you have to consider, are you cutting consistently on the line? What is the width of the line? are the angles correctly matched? All of these variables can add up to big variations in the final printed pattern!

    I'm so happy to have found your channel! I've been drafting blocks and patterns on paper, and doing tech drawings in Ai, but now I want to make my blocks and patterns digitally. My brain works in such a way that I'm not able to fill in the blanks --- At 19:23, you start with a file that's already been set up and has preliminary lines on it. I'm wondering if you have a tutorial that outlines the settings you use, to set up your files.

    • @POINTSofMEASURE
      @POINTSofMEASURE  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there, thanks so much for your kind words! In this tutorial I talk a little bit about grids and guides which are the main things I recommend when setting up your file (those can be found under the "View" menu at the top). You can also change the unit of measure (in the File menu at the top or you can also change it for all files in the Illustrator menu at the top). Other than that I pretty much just use the default menus set up in AI. This is a great topic though and I'll add it to my list for future videos! Let me know if you have more questions :)

    • @POINTSofMEASURE
      @POINTSofMEASURE  ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on what path you want to take - do you want to learn how to create digital patterns in Illustrator or do you want to learn on an actual patternmaking software like CLO3D, Tukatech, Gerber, Optitex etc?

    • @POINTSofMEASURE
      @POINTSofMEASURE  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Linda, just replied to your email! All you need to do is cut apart the lines in AI and spread them like you would on paper. You may need to draw in some additional lines to keep things organized. I have a tutorial on slash and spread here: th-cam.com/video/OsyaAWJHLOY/w-d-xo.html

    THank you so much for this info. One question - at 31:00 Your pattern is outside the print tile "dotted line" , this is where my confusion is that is that part going to be printed since it is outside of printing border, if yes then isnt your printed pattern going to not correct size to tape it? Im sorry im so confused, been trying to figure out printing settings since morning :(

    • @POINTSofMEASURE
      @POINTSofMEASURE  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, that's correct! So it's OK if your pattern goes across the print tiling. You will be taping your pages from edge to edge just like they're set up in AI and can fill in those small gaps. I would caution to not put any main points over those gaps - you can easily rearrange to your liking. It's sort of hard to explain - but I can show you a visual example! Send me a DM on Instagram @ pointsofmeasure or contact me via my website and I can send a photo that better illustrates what I'm talking about.

    How do you that a photo of the pattern to upload to Adobe Illustration if using a brought paper pattern?

    • @POINTSofMEASURE
      @POINTSofMEASURE  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can either take a photo and import it into AI or you can take a scan and import it into AI. Just make sure that the images are to scale! I like to draw a 1" x 1" box on the pattern to double check it once I have it in AI.

  • @AllIsWellaus
    @AllIsWellaus 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm wondering if there is software out there for 1/5 scale out there.

    • @POINTSofMEASURE
      @POINTSofMEASURE  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure on that specifically, but I'm sure you can scale in most Patternmaking software. You can definitely create a 1/5 scale pattern in AI!

    Hello❤️❤️❤️ I’m interested in creating and selling sewing patterns. I’ve only been successful in drafting patterns using Helen Joseph Armstrong’s technique, which I have been using since 2018❤️❤️(I’m self-taught, I didn’t go to university or have taken any courses for sewing. But I’m worried about running into legal problems if I use this technique. I’ve noticed almost all fashion designers on TH-cam use draping. Is that the ideal way to draft patterns if you plan on selling the patterns or making clothes for people. Thank you in advance❤️❤️❤️❤️

    • @POINTSofMEASURE
      @POINTSofMEASURE  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there! A lot of designers (including myself) use Helen's method. You shouldn't have any legal problems using that method to draft patterns that your selling, that's what her book is for! As long as you're not replicating her technique and selling it as a course/book. You can definitely use draping to create patterns, but draping and flat pattern are two very different techniques for two very different purposes. Draping is best used when the design is fluid, you want to let the fabric decide the shape of the garment, or you want to experiment with unique pattern shapes. Flat pattern is best used when you know the pattern shape and measurements. They can be used interchangeably, but that is the basic overview of what they're intended for.
