  • In this video, we discuss another topic before starting your homestead. Neighbors can be an asset or a liability and many times you don't know which they will be until its too late. Kelly and I discuss some things to consider about your potential neighbors before buying your land.

    Always a concern... what do you do if your neighbors are good when you move in and new neighbors move in after the fact that cause problems with your efforts? That'd be an unfortunate bummer. You're right though... neighbors can be a huge asset for rural homesteaders!

      That's kind of our situation. Our neighbors started out cool when we bought our place. But they became buttholes when they tried to dictate what we did on our property. Now they don't speak to us and ignore us when they drive by. Really ashame and childness when you think about it.

    Yes on the wanting to be a hermit. I just think you find a different kind, if not better, of people out in the sticks. Want to be left alone but always willing to lend a hand.

      "Always willing to lend a hand"... I like that. That is a good way to summarize it.

    That is a point many people forget and get themselves into a miserable situation. Thank you for bringing it up.

    Excellent advice. After I moved into my place, I found out the fellow down at the end of my road has a bad reputation, allegedly stealing stuff and harassing his neighbors. I just lucked out that I didn't buy anything closer to him!

      We had one of those neighbors when I first moved here. We had to incorporate some "tough love" experiences for him to realize we were not the neighbors he wanted to mess with. Now the four families that live in our community keep an eye out for each other and our properties.

    I agree. If, sadly, things were to go off the rails. Who else could you work together with to keep all of you going? You and your neighbours are all you would have.

    WELL said. Community is VERY important! Barter and shared resources/equipment should be as natural as sisters sharing clothes. With a few minor exceptions, the scale stays well balanced here.
    As I get older tho, I struggle with a tendency to become more reclusive. To their credit, my neighbors ain't having any of that. I get drug out of my 'shell' more than I'd like, but I suppose it works out to be good for me.

      Very good neighbors! I find myself not looking forward to an activity with neighbors but then once we are around a camp fire telling stories, I have a great time.

      Again, well said. Same here. If I can get out of it short of insult, I try. But when the neighbor's 14 y/o son shows up in the farm truck and says, "Mom sent me to drag you over for supper", ya get in the truck.....LOL. As the evening goes along, the part of me that wants be home gets smaller. Last time, the bitty 'un says, "I want Eli to tuck me in". Just about broke this old widower's scarred heart.

    PLEASE LISTEN to Troy and Kelly's advice. Am a bit shy and a loner with no family, so talking to strangers has always been hard (even when I'm out sharing the gospel). I have neighbors who have dogs that are constantly chasing our barn cats. Now am not sure I was mistaken thinking it wasn't them that killed a bunch of my chickens (out of 15 only have 3 hens and 1 rooster left). Then he told me he hates fences. sigh. And there is NO community here, and NO ONE does micro-farming or homesteading here. So there's no trading going on, and NOTHING is given away free, not even old busted pallets, old rotting lumber, or used coffee grounds, or buckets usually thrown away (they want $4.50/bucket from the donut shop here). I was even lied to about the well... the water is contaminated in the whole area.

    I bought 60 acres in the Missouri Ozarks, I really lucked out with my neighbors. One neighbor even offered to let me use his tractor anytime I needed it and let me store a wood cook stove in his barn and another neighbor let my son store a bunch of his tools after he went through a devorse. Neither one will take money so I offered to help with anything whenever they are in need. Also gave each a deer summer sausage for a small appreciation gift. 4 family's on a dead end road and all really friendly, yes I lucked out to have good neighbors.
    Now to get my off grid homestead built from scratch, check out my channel if you like. Good luck and God bless.

      Yes, the ash borer has pretty much wiped us out. I have hundreds of dead ash trees.

    Are you sure you’re responsible if the livestock get out? Or does the open range law come into affect?

    • @seamonsdoug5141
      @seamonsdoug5141 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course you should do you best at containing your stock.

    • @RedToolHouse
      @RedToolHouse  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In WV that is the law. If your personal property destroys someone else's property, then you are liable whether it is a tree falling across a property line on a house or an animal getting out. We have a precedent set where a farmer's cow got out and was hit by a car on the road. The farmer was liable for the damages. Insurance covered it all of course.

      Interesting how different states have different laws regarding this matter

    • @jeanettewaverly2590
      @jeanettewaverly2590 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the two states I've lived in (California and New Mexico) there are bounded open range areas in which the animals have the right-of-way. Everywhere else, it's the animals' owners responsibility to contain them.

    Have you ever done a video on AI'ing your hogs? I'm getting into raising hogs and am thinking of AI'ing instead of keeping a boar on the farm
