Sam McClure and Caroline Wilson arnt qualified to talk about footy for a job. Leave it to the blokes that have actually played at the highest level. McClure and Wilson literally have no idea what they are talking about
Wilson is. She grew up in a football club, her father was president of Richmond for 10 years. She’s been a journo since 1982. You may not agree with everything she says but she knows more football people and administrators than you’ve had showers. McClure on the other hand is just a suck up.
McClure and Caro trying to justify that we shouldn't discuss umpiring decisions is insane. Footy never used to be like this. In fact it was perfectly fine for decades.
Have a look at Leigh Colberts great mark that wasn't paid in 1997 against Adelaide. That shows that nothing has got better. Although the deliberate behind against Essendon was the correct decision as he wasn't under immediate pressure as the Geelong players actually moved away and he had plenty of space to play on.
There wouldn’t be a problem if the umpires knew the rules! Every fan can’t believe a handful of decisions each week that change the course of matches when an umpire is only meters away from the action!
I stopped watching football this year because of umpiring. I am sicking of seeing outcomes based on umpiring, I want to see outcomes based on the players. Players cannot bet on games yet umpires are allowed an earpiece. Why?
Lloyd is right, when you change rules so Willy nilly in the middle of a season, and interpretations the next week on the whim of one coach’s comments then you’re opening yourself up for criticism. Now the AFL is back tracking on the transparent explanations (which personally I think is a stupid idea that opens a whole can of worms - unless you’re going to explain every incorrect decision during the games). Of course Chris Scott’s opinion carries weight but no more than the other 17 coaches. Making decisions on the run opens up the idea that the AFL can be coerced into making changes that benefit certain opinions. And the cycle continues. Don’t make decisions without proper consultation and don’t change things mid season. The AFL has opened itself to multiple criticisms because it has been very reactionary on multiple fronts and every change has a cause and effect.
Did Matthew Nicks get a call from Laura after the bombers game? And I can only assume Brad Scott was desperately seeking clarification on the htb rule after Draper’s performance to seal them the game.
Laura has been a joke, every Monday comes out with a big smile going through the decisions the umpires got right and says she has no problem but pretty much ignores all the howlers. First step to fixing this debacle is acknowledge there are issues with umpiring instead of trying to cover it up and not take about it!
The only way this horrible sport is ever going to change for the better is if the fans stop going to the game. I honestly have no idea why people still pay to walk thru the gates
Essendon players made mistakes. Geelong players made mistakes. Umpires made a few mistakes. Do not blame the umpires...its the AFLs fault. The only sport in the World that constantly changes interpretations of rules that have been around for a hundred years.
There was around 18 incorrect decisions as per the rules that went against Essendon in one single quarter. There is a list that the club and AFL discussed. Of the 18 the AFL said two were correct calls in their opinion. One of those two they claimed was correct was insane.
You can’t blame the league for some of these decisions. They’re clearly obvious. My 7year old sat and watched and correctly made the decisions these high paid umpires don’t get right… he’s 7 and can do it. Stop excusing these idiotic umpires that don’t get the game

When you have no good, or believable, answers to provide, the safest option is always to provide no answers. The fans' and media's focus on umpiring will continue regardless of whether there is a weekly decisions explanation interview or not.
This is what happens when when you appoint people on the basis of diversity and inclusion and not whether they know what they're doing. It's no coincidence that the umpiring is at its worst in VFL/ AFL history while a woman is in charge.
Exactly. She has literally never played the sport before. Not once. Of course she has no idea what she's doing. It's like if the International Council of Chess appointed me as their President.....what the hell do I know about that?
I don’t see what qualifies Laura Kane to have her current job despite the AFL needing a woman in a high position. She has no footy experience nor footy knowledge. Which seems odd for a “footy boss”
There should never have been a rule change to make rushing a point illegal in the first place. If it ain't broke.. don't try to fix it. If it costs the opposition victory at the death of a close game, then it's no different to the other tactics used to slow the game down, including kicking backwards. Correction.. Kicking backwards in the last three minutes of a game is much more common and much worse, and should be made illegal. Like most, I also hate the stand the mark rule. How many more 50 metre penalties are going to be triggered, as players try to rush downfield past the player who's just marked.. almost always at a distance of at least five metres, with no intention to restrict or interfere with the ball in hand player's options? The whole thing's a recipe for disaster that would have been easily identified as such by parents watching an under 10's game. Just make it illegal to approach the player, including cutting off his option to play on, until the umpire calls PLAY ON. Common sense would then prevail if an opposition player running past tried to disguise an interfering or restricting action. the umpire would be on the spot, and could easily and accurately read the situation.. moreso even than whether a player didn't make a sufficient attempt to keep a ball he had possession of in the field of play. etc etc..
Coaches shouldn't be giving their opinions about rules anyway, they flip flop on interpretation depending on what just happened to them directly because they are the ones under pressure. Stop asking Chris Scott what he thinks, its totally meaningless.
There was a lot of frees that should have been given to the dons, but I feel like that rush behind was fair, he had no pressure and ran over the line like its rugby
Laura Kane funny enough isn’t the problem people thinking the rules have changed is the problem the fundamental rules of the game haven’t changed in over 100 years but the AFL want to put their own spin on it and confuse people when in actual fact nothing has changed
@Wikl6932 Didn't watch the game did you. Essendon might well have lost but that 3rd qtr was absolutely diabolical. If Geelong has copped it the way the Bombers did, they would be screaming for blood, just like the coach was earlier in the year.
It won't change the result. Be honest too many rule changes at Headquarters during the off season. Have it's affect on the way the game is played now. It's called sadly consequences.
The umps completely ruined a great contest on Saturday night. Geelong got one BS decision after another go their way. I switched off right before the end of the 3rd qtr to go and watch a movie.
The AFL Corp thinks it’s above reproach and criticism. It’s currently showing contempt for the fans and players. Im noticing this is starting to become the norm across the upper sphere of Australian society.
This is such a typical spineless move by the AFL. The game itself is becoming unwatchable! Lordo - Dempsey thinks one thing, and Langford thinks something else McClure (I can't even kick a drop punt) - That's OK Lordo - Looks dead in his eyes and says, no it's not! McClure - Um, I don't understand.
Its a mess. . Ex players opinion vs Administrators ..I think i know who has a better feel for the game.. My 89yr old mum would have given a better explanation on the none 50mtr penalty than Laura Kane she has no clue ..out of her depth
U font have to explain every decision but when you get at least 6 howlers in a quarter and the momentum swings completely in one direction if prob deserves some explanation.
ALL AFL clubs spend vast amount of money in an attempt to gain an additional 1% on field advantage, AFL clubs are big business.......yet they are not allowed to question an umpire's decision that cost them games? Adelaide vs Sydney 2023 and the "No Goal" as an example that cost Adelaide (and others e.g. SANFL) vast sums of money, no final's tickets sold, merchandise, 2024 memberships etc......along with the fact it also cost individual's money e.g. Crows coaching staff bonuses, players contract clause payments etc. AFL if you don't want to be questioned on umpiring decisions the key is to GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME, not to stick your head in the sand and hope it goes away. - 4 umpires and yet it seems there are way more incorrect calls than ever, pay them properly and train them properly and then the standards will lift - technology is available and not used, look at sports world's best practices C'mon AFL....make the effort in actions not words.
It looks like the AFL have forgotten that they are merely the custodians of the game which belongs to the fans. They are screwing the game up and they can’t/won’t explain decisions. If nobody understands the rules, how can coaches train players how to play within the rules? There is too much left to interpretation of the umpires. A succession of poor decisions cost the Bombers momentum and possibly the match against the Cats. Bad umpiring should not be the conversation we are having, but it is. Stonewalling by the AFL is only ruining the game and will ultimately turn fans away. I wonder how this shamozzle is going to be viewed against Laura Kane’s KPIs.
Admitting wrongs does not help the team affected after the fact….there are multiple stuff ups with basic calls which well paid umpires should not make - all teams are confused
No comment from Laura because she didn’t want to admit there were more than 5 wrong decisions in one quarter against one team that would make them look bad🎉🎉
The umpires fckd up , afl is becoming unwatchable, almost every round there is a poor umpiring decision that affects the outcome of the game. If the afl can’t see this , then we have the wrong people in charge .
Poor Brad Scott he should have learnt when he was at North about umpiring and he should have fixed it when he was in the seat now he's on the wrong side again.
The media and disgruntled coaches like the Scott Whingers have created all of this drama and hysteria. Analysing every umpiring decision is making the umpires jobs harder and harder. Teams get good and bad decisions, but games are won and lost by the players and coaches. Essendon lost on the weekend because they were crap, not because of two bad decisions.
We talk about the umpires because the umpires are deciding and changing games. Holding the ball changes from game to game. Even in game, you can have two basically identical moments and one is called play on, and the other is called holding the ball. It's frustrating the fans, let alone the players who have no idea what they're supposed to be doing. For 100 years, if you've had prior opportunity and get tackled - that's a free kick. I understand it isn't an easy gig but the umpires aren't stupid. There is clearly a direction (or misdirection) from AFL house. I bet even the umps have no idea half the time. The games have become a basket case since Laura Kane was appointed. Imagine if the Essendon V Geelong game was a prelim or even GF. Is that what we want in our game?
The rushed behind rule is the worst rule in the game. It doesn't make the game better in any way. No-one really understands it, so just let players rush behinds as they did for over 100 years.
The AFL can't help but tinker and meddle with the game. It's OCD behaviour. Just leave it alone. Get somebody in that position who has actually played AFL and understands the game.

AFL decided there was too much focus on accountability, especially on Laura’a.
DEI hire not up to it .. ....again
Diversity hires are rarely successful. I give you exhibit A.
Players make mistakes they get punished.
Umpires make mistakes and sometimes cost teams a game and all they get is a pay rise.
Yes right on.
About time they start paying fines for bad decisions that changes outcomes of a result
Players make a mistake and they a crucified all week and hounded by the afl but umpires make mistakes and anyone critical of them gets attacked by the AFL and the AFL acts like there’s nothing wrong.
Dwayne russel said it best in SEN last Friday “the problem is not all umpires are on the same page when it comes interpretation” we’ll get them all on the same page to begin with it’s not that bloody hard seriously it’s getting worse from game to game not to mention there’s 6-8 umpires on the field it’s become a fascicle
She needs to resign ,,had enough of this bullsh ,she’s fking our game
who is she like what's her background how did she get the job?? sorry yeah been living under a rock
Andrew Dillon gotta go too
Sam McClure and Caroline Wilson have got to be the worst two "journalists" in sport.
She’s destroying our game
Its now HER GAME
McClure and Caro trying to justify that we shouldn't discuss umpiring decisions is insane. Footy never used to be like this. In fact it was perfectly fine for decades.
Funny how dimma gets fined but brad gets an apology
Can't ignore the trash umpiring it needs to be addressed NOT ignored
I liked when Llordo shut down McClure @3:50
Have a look at Leigh Colberts great mark that wasn't paid in 1997 against Adelaide. That shows that nothing has got better. Although the deliberate behind against Essendon was the correct decision as he wasn't under immediate pressure as the Geelong players actually moved away and he had plenty of space to play on.
Sam McClure-No
Mark Maclure-Yes
Uber Eats, Get Almost Almost Anything
There wouldn’t be a problem if the umpires knew the rules!
Every fan can’t believe a handful of decisions each week that change the course of matches when an umpire is only meters away from the action!
Why does it matter if the games are close? That doesn’t mean it’s a good game to watch
Run the Tape on the third Quarter Quarter and you will see plenty of decisions that pointed to blatant Umpire bias
Disgraceful
McClure for the whole video: "yeah, but you don't have to ".
Okay fella, great contribution.
The competency of the umpires is equally damaging as the Afl.
Ego and being bulletproof has made the umpires a blight on our game.
@@Littleyeti7 Yep...I get what you are saying. But what did the 7 year old think of Draper laying on the ball a few months ago?? If Draper had of got pinged, and he should have, Essendon would be ninth on the ladder.
@@00higgo they like being more visible and involved than they should be. They remind me of the Joker’s comment… “some people just want to watch the world burn”
Fully agree with you, she does not know what she is doing, completely making it up as she goes along.
100% ✅
DEI = Destroys Everything Intentionally
Looks like a thing more than a woman.

@@Jazzanaught Nah maybe better off in the corrupt state Labor Party.
Just make the penalty box a no rule area, where you can do what you want with a warning foul play will be reported.........how easy!
Common sense would then prevail if an opposition player running past tried to disguise an interfering or restricting action. the umpire would be on the spot, and could easily and accurately read the situation.. moreso even than whether a player didn't make a sufficient attempt to keep a ball he had possession of in the field of play. etc etc..
When are supporters going to understand most sports are rigged? It’s a show and a distraction to what really effects you
Rigged for gambling like in American football.
How can they admit it was wrong when the written rules say it was right? No wonder everyone is confused.
The reset was cause she was doing a horrible job, she was talking like a politician which we don’t need for her job
That’s what happens when lawyers run the AFL
Who the HELL is Laura Kane. Anyone, anyone bueller.
Local footy is where it's at.
Ok don’t explain to the fans that bring the money into the game and us fans won’t bring in the money anymore then
Has there ever been a bigger flog than Sam?
Coaches shouldn't be giving their opinions about rules anyway, they flip flop on interpretation depending on what just happened to them directly because they are the ones under pressure. Stop asking Chris Scott what he thinks, its totally meaningless.
There was a lot of frees that should have been given to the dons, but I feel like that rush behind was fair, he had no pressure and ran over the line like its rugby
Port did it against St Kilda and didn't get pinged.
Either way, one of the decisions is wrong and back to where you started.
Can Sam McClure be removed from all forms of AFL media. I can’t stand listening to him.
Sam McLure = the epitome of unearned confidence
What about the Tom McCartin one a week earlier? Same thing
Laura Kane funny enough isn’t the problem people thinking the rules have changed is the problem the fundamental rules of the game haven’t changed in over 100 years but the AFL want to put their own spin on it and confuse people when in actual fact nothing has changed
I thought the umpires must have put a few bob on the Cats.
blaming a 45 point loss on poor umpiring is embarrassing
Geelong and Sydney are always the best to bet on with the umpires
@Wikl6932 Didn't watch the game did you. Essendon might well have lost but that 3rd qtr was absolutely diabolical.
If Geelong has copped it the way the Bombers did, they would be screaming for blood, just like the coach was earlier in the year.
@@anthonyg6705 Razor Ray brought a nice House rigging Games in the past especially North one's !
Essendon won the free kick count still .
It won't change the result. Be honest too many rule changes at Headquarters during the off season. Have it's affect on the way the game is played now. It's called sadly consequences.
I look forward to the totally incompetent umpires and AFL ruin multiple games of football again this weekend 🤡
The umps completely ruined a great contest on Saturday night. Geelong got one BS decision after another go their way. I switched off right before the end of the 3rd qtr to go and watch a movie.
We don't want clarity, we want correct decisions. I dont believe umpiring is that difficult.
The AFL Corp thinks it’s above reproach and criticism. It’s currently showing contempt for the fans and players. Im noticing this is starting to become the norm across the upper sphere of Australian society.
Kane is a complete clown. Put a Sheila in see what happens
Just like old Caro who is another DEI that just won’t go away … 🤡😵💀
Forget Menzy what about the push in the back prior
Sack umpires that can’t do the job to the standard that fans expect. The AFL needs to stop defending poor umpiring and taking us fans as fools.
Because it’s so poor and effecting games,
This is such a typical spineless move by the AFL. The game itself is becoming unwatchable!
Lordo - Dempsey thinks one thing, and Langford thinks something else
McClure (I can't even kick a drop punt) - That's OK
Lordo - Looks dead in his eyes and says, no it's not!
McClure - Um, I don't understand.
Sam McClure makes Caroline Wilson look like an angel
Its a mess. . Ex players opinion vs Administrators ..I think i know who has a better feel for the game..
My 89yr old mum would have given a better explanation on the none 50mtr penalty than Laura Kane she has no clue ..out of her depth
Lets not forget who employed Kane and Dillon
The same bloke who gave us Alan Joyce
If Collingwood had won, the commentators would have cherry picked umpire decisions to complain about.
U font have to explain every decision but when you get at least 6 howlers in a quarter and the momentum swings completely in one direction if prob deserves some explanation.
Caroline and Mathew... wouldn't be biased.
- 4 umpires and yet it seems there are way more incorrect calls than ever, pay them properly and train them properly and then the standards will lift
- technology is available and not used, look at sports world's best practices
C'mon AFL....make the effort in actions not words.
If that is not a deliberate behind, just get rid of the rule altogether.
How does Sam get a gig on anything footy related?
Because of his father
Corruption disguised as incompetence.Easier to manipulate games with vague rules and no leadership accountability.
The weakest parts of our game are the umpiring and Caroline Wilson.
DEI at work. I trust she won't be flying planes anytime soon?
No comment from Laura because she didn’t want to admit there were more than 5 wrong decisions in one quarter against one team that would make them look bad🎉🎉
The umpires fckd up , afl is becoming unwatchable, almost every round there is a poor umpiring decision that affects the outcome of the game. If the afl can’t see this , then we have the wrong people in charge .
And the incompetent keep their jobs!
Poor Brad Scott he should have learnt when he was at North about umpiring and he should have fixed it when he was in the seat now he's on the wrong side again.
Laura shouldn't be explaining the umpiring decisions anyway, that's what the umpire boss is for.
The AFL’s DEI pick fails. Shocked.
'2 bad decisions'
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Righto champ
Too many rules. I don’t know if any other sport in the world changes it’s rules more then AFL, maybe the NFL
All Fans should boycott the games whether that be live or on TV
Wilson she has not been bagged for doing it, she is being bagged due to the way she is doing it!!
The rushed behind rule is the worst rule in the game. It doesn't make the game better in any way. No-one really understands it, so just let players rush behinds as they did for over 100 years.
I think get rid of it and keep the ball in play …
The AFL can't help but tinker and meddle with the game. It's OCD behaviour. Just leave it alone. Get somebody in that position who has actually played AFL and understands the game.
No one listened to Justin longmuire when the Dockers lost 2 important games due to poor umpiring!
