    My favorite derelict. The perfect family car, It's a grocery getter, Room for road trips, and the rear door folds down for picnic's. Absolutely Perfect !

      Its also perfect when you don't change the wheels, put the original engine back in, and paint it a mid century color.

      @MTR what do you mean, are automobiles far better than modern society not "good" enough for the law. Ahjeez of course modern government started that regulations. "Hey, we took away those fantastic automobiles and changed their design, but now you can't drive them either!"

    • @artdecotimes2942
      @artdecotimes2942 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @MTR well, your calling it naturally restored to its very paramount beginning of a finish, clean working as it did back in 1938, not good enough for the plastic computers on wheels we have to show for progress. More of an offense as when they put the orange caution triangle on the back of the model T disproving its many advancments for the world and rendering it to "old" and "slow" practically.

    Brings back memories. Until I was 15 (I'm 69 now) the family car was a 1953 Desoto Firedome V8 station wagon. We had it for many years. It was two tone green. I remember it had a semi automatic transmission with a clutch pedal. My dad always had a glass pack muffler on it so it had a nice rumble. We lived in NJ and my Grandparents lived in NC so at least once per year we would drive down to visit them. There were 6 kids so I spent many hours with blankets and pillows in that wooden floor cargo area in back. My dad made a wooden rooftop luggage carrier for it so we were quite a sight all loaded up going down the road. Probably got the plans from Popular Science or Popular Mechanics. I never see any of those, even restored, on the road these days.

    Keeping the original steering wheel is an oft-overlooked lovely touch.. nothing disappoints me more to see a beautiful hot rod with a modern machined steering wheel.

    this car is awesome! I don't get why more people who restore, or rebuild cars like this, don't want this original patina of the body, which probably took the entire life of the car to create, mounted on all new, safe modern frame and engine. This is the kind of car that is a pleasure to own and drive. Love the patina and the wonderful old shapes of the body. Interior is not overdone either. Great car, and I'm not a car guy!!! I'd love to have a few vehicles exactly like this!! Thanks for letting us see it Jay and Jonathon!

    Hello Jay I had a 55 2nd edition chevy pickup for over 35 years . It had several motors due to hard use . With a super charger under the hood. It was repainted inside and out with new glass and interior twice . But it had been driven hard and vandalized twice as a daily driver . But I really enjoyed it more when it was left in its dented , scratched stated . It was always left alone in that state when parked . Never needed more than the windshield cleaned . And wiped the smile off the face of more than 1 corvette owner .

      Castro wouldn't, but other Cubans might. Now that relations between the US and Cuba are being normalized, I'll bet there are hundreds of old car nuts that will descend on Cuba to buy those old Cuban cars. And I'm sure at least some Cubans with old cars would like to replace them with new cars in trade.

    An actor buddy of a friend of mine pulled up to a party my friend was having in a chevy pick up truck. I didn’t know him and thought his truck was in the process of being fixed up. He was talking to me about my 2003 ford f350 dually, that was all fixed up. 24” rims, painted, stereo system etc. i told him it had been stolen and i just got it back from the shop. He told me his was a derelict. He proceeded to show me. Old looking rims, but top of the line tires, willwood disc brakes, chevy corvette motor, new suspension, and it actually was painted to look all rusted, with bondo showing etc. Like it was being worked on. Truck ran amazingly

    My question would be: How does the exterior paint
    ust affect the long-term health of the car. I would prefer a car with a traditional paint job that was then distressed on top of the elite paint job. Onlookers wouldn't know the difference and the car would be protected by the superior paint job underneath. Just like in a house, the exterior paint is a major part of maintaining a car.

    I have a 2001 Ford Ranger. Talk about derelict. A tree fell on it, paint faded around the huge roof dent and holes, doors are dented to match the roof dent so they can contour to the heavily dented roof, cargo bed has one dented side, dents on one fender. I kept the old nightmare after insurance paid me for it. It still ran so I kept it for working on my rural property. Then I started to tinker and fixed the damaged suspension, gave it a tune up, fixed the air conditioner. Then I decided to to go ahead an register it again after I sealed the holes on the roof with silicon. It gets a lot of looks. But not necessarily the looks of, Wow! It is more the look of, "Um, that thing still runs?"

    Back in the day, cir. 1967, we referred to these big lumbering type cars as "Jungle Cruisers" , sometimes "Detroit Sleds". Both still seem fitting today. What's sort of interesting is that you rarely see an original 1952 anything on the road in original patina that hasn't been fooled with. So now, this 1952 De Soto is quite the "Sleeper".

    • @thebrain9384
      @thebrain9384 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Didn't need them in cars that size.. That would absorb a lot of impact.I had an early 1970s Caddy Eldorado, I could've cut a wooden telephonepole down and still drove home with it. I don't think this weighs much, Maybe the same as a 1957 Chevy or a Yellow cab of that time, but it's still big enough to get away with hitting things. These maybe 2700-3200 LBS. My car was 5000LBS.

    • @berrytharp1334
      @berrytharp1334 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Everyone knows that seatbelts in those old cars would only trap you underwater or in a fire. You want a rigid car that will throw you free of the wreck at high speeds.

    • @ohwell2790
      @ohwell2790 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@berrytharp1334 As in modern cars do not have seat belts. And then you thing flying through the air at 70 mph will save your life. You are already dead going through the wind shield. Are sure that you are not from Mars?

    • @roberthaworth8991
      @roberthaworth8991 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good heavens, what suicidal thinking. At anything over 30MPH in one of these, the only thing you'll be thrown through is -- the windshield! You're much safer if the car can disintegrate in a controlled fashion, dissipating crash energy rapidly and AWAY FROM the passenger compartment. Modern cars are designed to do this. After a collision from almost any angle at highway speeds, there isn't much left -- only you, still buckled-in and surrounded by deflated airbags. Anyway, I'm pretty sure he had to retrofit at least a few modern safety devices (not shown here) to get a road license in CA for this piece.

    I dig organic beaters, but can't stand cars built to look like true beater. I appreciate the work that went into this & is a daily driver, but it pretty close to being a fake beater. IMO he should reworked the original hemi, instead of going with an engine that's a hemi in name only. Make those valve covers mean what they say dammit. :) His iron, his money, but I don't have go nuts over because Jay does.

    That's really sad. A nice old car like that should either have the original engine in it, or at least a "real" engine, with a carburetor and no electronics. The main reason I got into old cars was to get rid of all the modern crap. I absolutely hate that stuff. In my state anything 1967 and newer is subject to emissions testing, so I stick with '66 and older, so I can do whatever I want with it and not have to worry about interference from the govt. A stock or hot rodded '60s hemi would be great in that car. EFI and computerized engine management systems are the worst thing to ever happen to cars. The modern chassis is a great idea. Modern suspension, steering and brakes are wonderful (as long as you don't use ABS) These old cars were strictly mechanical, and should be left that way.

    • @faithismine128
      @faithismine128 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. All that computer stuff is great until it starts throwing trouble codes (and it will). Most shops would not touch that thing. A 4 barrel Big-block is the way to go. AC would be the one thing I must have. I hate ABS, I swear I can stop almost as fast without it.

    I love it. This car puts a smile on my face and I believe it would stay there if I ever rode in one, indefinitely. Well done concept, proven reality for many of us. It is human because if reminds me of my history. Right when you are reliving the past, something modern about the car hits you and you say, heck ya! Personally, I like leaving it derelict, but resto-mods are equal. It must have modern brakes, suspension and power and assorted electrics.
