Today this video would be a mass of tackle plugs, slow mo clips and R&B music. Thank God I can remember when angling was this simple and enjoyable. Great watch. ❤

Thanks for posting. Fred was a real gentleman and was always pleased to share his methods and love of his barbel with others. Only fished with him once, at the Old Mill, Aldermaston, on a freezing day, one of the ABE fishing days. He is still in our hearts and sadly missed.

Very good. Love watching the older videos. Fishing is so commercialised now.

Takes me back to when tackle and tactics were simpler, and fishing was an enjoyable pastime.

Guessing this is early 1980s, the tackle and watercraft is timeless. Love the old VHS how-to videos, a comfortable warm glow of how fishing used to be (and for some of us still is!).

Eight minutes in, he mentions that this was the spot where he caught his first ever barbel "More than 40 years' ago . . . .in 1956". So, this must have been filmed in the late 1990s.

@@portcullis5622 Crikey, as late as that? I watched it again for clues but the tackle Fred displays is difficult to date. I have some Drennan hooks like the ones in the video, and I think they date back to the 1980s. I remember blokes in the 1970s fishing with gear from the 50s, maybe earlier. Video technology has come on so far it all look old, so you are likely correct.

Wow. Watched this last night. I remember reading about Mr Crouch in Dave Costner's Anglers Mail cartoon diary when I was a kid. Even Dave Costner said he 'was a character'. This is a definite, fascinating insight into a bygone era. Homemade rustic feeders and homemade wonky leads.

"I like to keep my rod tip down low, as I explained earĺier, just because everyone else likes to put their rods up in the air".
    Love his attitude!

That was really great, I enjoyed that a lot. Back to the times when bait selection and tactics were quite simple. Do you know what year this was filmed? It’s a great shame you haven’t got the summer episode. Neil

I'm not sure if the Summer episode actually exists. I'd be interested to see it myself if it does.

I had a 9.5 yesterday freelining meat. Admittedly the rod and line were heavier than Fred's 6 lb line and pound and a bit cane.
