    1. Check out our limited time Midway collectibles here: timeghost.tv/collectibles/
    2. This week there are three regular weekly episodes. Today's episode - the second of three is the “normal” regular one and covers everything except Midway that happens this week in 1942, and then we return to Midway tomorrow again.
A big week of change this week- the situation in the Pacific changes, as does that in North Africa and on Malta. The death of Heydrich is certainly going to cause a stir as well. That's covered, as I said, in the War Against Humanity subseries. You can watch that right here: th-cam.com/play/PLsIk0qF0R1j4cwI-ZuDoBLxVEV3egWKoM.html
And since Midway is going on, you may want to refresh your knowledge of the beginnings of the war between Japan and the US at pearl Harbor. You can watch our ten-part mini-series on that right here: th-cam.com/play/PLsIk0qF0R1j6ydMvoUBKj_WrnP4PtBlfk.html
And please read our rules of conduct before you comment, saves everyone headaches (and loads of time): community.timeghost.tv/t/rules-of-conduct/4518

"Listen to Buck, use you nukes" failure hits Nazi Germany. The USA would not make this mistake. "Just one Year in the trenches of World War 1" was reason enough for the USA.
Primary target was Rabaul and to be annihilated by 1943 now that the "Battle of Midway" had been decisive both in anticipating the attack ("There must need be a 2nd Pearl Harbor") and in executing upon this understanding at Midway Atoll.

@@truegrit1860 Midway wasn't a country either, just a small island controlled by the U.S. Thus the question rolfsuege1284 asked is reasonable, despite Malta not being a country in 1942 as rolfsuege1284 stated it was. This is especially so since Malta gained its independence from Britain in 1964, became the Republic of Malta in 1974, and joined the EU in 2004. I'm pretty sure most people outside Malta are unaware of these details. In fact Malta is now a country contrary to what your criticism of rolfsuge1284's question states. It's OK to be unaware of Malta in fact being in fact now a country. But at the same time it's needlessly harsh to criticize rolfsuege1283 for not knowing Malta wasn't yet a country in 1942.
Officially the Republic of Malta, consists of the main island Malta and the smaller islands of Gozo and Comino. The country covers an area of 316 km; compared, it is about twice the size of Washington, DC, and would fit into Luxembourg eight times.
      www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/malta.htm.
The difference between Malta and Midway is that the Battle of Midway forever ended Japanese naval superiority mainly in a matter of a few critical minutes. But the Axis failure take Malta although it took much longer and didn't end in an Allied victory on the scale of Midway arguably changed the outcome in North Africa. After all, Axis victories in North Africa and the Pacific area both featured many triumphs by often vastly numerically inferior but much better prepared and led forces.

Even if they had been killed or wounded, there should have been men within that unit capable of filling their boots. If a lieutenant was not performing some task to expectations, they could be relieved of command & replaced (by someone much father down the chain than Rommel), or if there was some extraordinary task required of them Rommel could make that known and delegate without taking direct control.
I'm not familiar with the circumstances of that event beyond it's brief mention here, but a general performing the role of a platoon commander or platoon sergeant is micromanagement to an insane degree, and it is hard to see how there could have been any benefit from that.

When you call that testimony "questionable" you mean it was questionable in the eyes of the British and Americans in mid-1942 right? It should be needless to say that by the end of World War II there was plenty of trustworthy documentation that millions of people had been murdered at Nazi death camps. Then after the war there were many, many war crimes trials. Those trials greatly added to that documentation and established the existence of Nazi death camps beyond all doubt. To this day some people deny these horrific facts but relatively few people take those denials seriously.

Of those British ships sent to help the Americans, one would care a special meaning to a small village on the coast of North Carolina. HMT Bedfordshire, a converted anti sub trawler was on patrol off the coast when a U-Boat torpedoed and sank the ship with all hands lost in May. 4 sailors' bodies from the vessel washed up onto the island of Ocracoke, near the village with the same name. The local Coast Guard/Navy base buried the sailors with military honors and locals cared for the graves. In 1976, as a gesture of goodwill, the US government donated the very small plot along with another British Sailors cemetery on nearby Hatteras Island to Britain so that the sailors could rest enterally on British soil. Today, the graves are documented and kept to the standards of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

RAF Bomber Command Weekly Report (I'll start adding these going forward):
    Night of June 1st/2nd:
-Two days after the 1000 bomber raid on Cologne (my animated time lapse of that raid can be seen here: th-cam.com/video/JF-jsPCYN4A/w-d-xo.html), Arthur Harris launches a 2nd "1000 bomber" raid on Essen while he still has the training formations on hand. The plan is a lead force of Gee equipped bombers marking Essen with flares, and the rest to bomb with incendiaries and HE. However heavy industrial smog hides Essen, and the flares are dropped as far as 10 miles NW of Essen.
-The resulting bombing is scattered, thus the raid is not a success. Some 12 towns (including Essen are hit). At least 165 people are killed.
-31 bombers (3.2% losses) are lost. 20 fall to German night fighters; three Nachtjagd pilots shoot down two bombers each. A leading Nachtjagd Ace (Helmut Woltersdorf - 23 kills) is killed by a RAF Hurricane flying intruder operations around his airfield. Wolfgang Schnaufer shoots down his first aircraft, the first of 121 RAF bombers he will destroy in the next 3 years.
    Night of June 2nd/3rd:
-Essen again, but only 195 aircraft. The 1000 bomber fleet has been temporarily disbanded. The plan is similar to the previous night, and the Raid is just about as unsuccessful. Flares are scattered, in one case bombing photos shows one aircraft dropped flares 56 miles West of Essen. No concentration of bombing is achieved, damage is minimal and German casualties are minimal
-13 bombers are lost (6.6% losses), at least 8 by night fighters. Leading Nachtjagd Ace Helmut Lent increases his score to 39 when he shoots down a Hampden bomber of 408 "Goose" Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force. No Nachtjagd casualties.
    Night of June 3rd/4th:
-170 Bombers Target Bremen. The flare force does a decent job, and about 65 bombers are estimated to get their bombs within 5 miles of the aiming point. Some minor damage to U-boat construction yards and the Focke-Wulf factory, damage to housing on 5 streets, dock facilities recieve some damage and Destroyer Z-25 is hit. 83 die in Bremen, 258 are wounded, Bremen's 3rd worst death toll it would suffer in WWII.
-11 bombers are lost (6.5% losses), 7 by night fighters. Leading Nachtjagd Ace Helmut Lent again scores (a 76 Squadron Halifax), bringing his tally to 40. Two Nachjagd fighters are shot down by RAF bomber gunners, 3 of the 4 crew perish.
    Night of June 5th/6th:
-Essen again with 180 bombers. The raid is again scattered, industrial smog continues to protect the Ruhr cities. 10 people die and 68 are injured in Essen. Minor property damage.
-12 bombers are lost (6.7% losses), six by night fighters. Leading Nachtjagd Ace Helmut Lent shoots down two wellington bombers, for his 41st and 42nd victories. Two Nachtjagd fighters are lost, one shot down by an unidentified bomber (pilot killed), and one collides with a Stirling (the German pilot so severely wounded he will never fly again).
    Night of June 6th/7th:
-233 bombers target Emden, thanks to good weather the flare force accurately marks the town. 71% of camera carrying bombers are plotted within 5 miles of the aiming point, suggesting most bombers found the target this night. 17 people are killed and 49 injured. 300 Homes and destroyed and 200 damaged. Various docking yards, warehouses, work shops, and facilities are gutted.
-9 bombers are lost (3.8% losses), six to night fighters. Oblt Ludwig Becker shoots down three bombers: a Manchester, a Stirling, a Wellington, for his 20th, 21st, and 22nd victories. Becker has shot down 5 bombers this week. No Nachtjagd losses this night.
    Weekly Summary:
-1779 sorties dispatched on main raids (excluding mining operations)
-76 Bombers and ~450 Bomber crew lost, a loss rate of 4.2% of dispatched sorties.
-Odds an RAF bomber crew will be shot down before completing their mandatory 30 mission operational tour:
--> At 4.2% losses --> 72.4% chance of being shot down.
--> Less than 30% of bomber crews survive being shot down
--> Mortality rate for those who serve in front line bomber squadrons is well above 50% in 1942

Because they typically attacked at night, the survival rate of RAF Bomber Command crew in planes shot down was lower than in the case of the later American daylight bombing raids. Roughly 15%, as opposed to about 50% in the case of the Americans. The discrepancy was at least partly because finding the escape hatch of a plane at night and bailing out was harder - perhaps the only available light was from the flames that were also destroying the aircraft.
Despite its legendary reputation, the Lancaster had a lower survival rate than either the Stirling, the first major four-engine British bomber, or the Halifax.

Going back to the Battle of Midway, and why it was so important. The Germans had sunk 377 merchant ships off the U.S Atlantic coast. Allied warships are finally being deployed to stop the u-boat attacks off the U.S. Had the U.S. lost the Battle of Midway, those ships would have had to go to the Pacific to slow down, not stop, just slow down, the Japanese advance. That would have allowed the u-boats to continue their attacks on merchant ships relatively unimpeded. Had those merchant ship losses continued, the Allies would not have had the sealift capability required for the D-Day landings, or even Operation Torch, the landings in North Africa. The U.S. victory at the Battle of Midway made subsequent victories in Europe and the Pacific possible and very likely determined the outcome of the war.
As Mr. Neidell puts it, ' ....in six minutes. " ;-)

The strategic effectiveness of the plan matters very little in comparison to the Commander's ability to convince his peers and subordinates that an easy victory awaits

Midway through the battle of Midway update!

So, the Royal Navy was right; there _was_ a Japanese attack on Madagascar! Granted, it was a bit smaller than the one on Midway, but maybe the presence of the British fleet acted as a deterrent. That should be good enough to tell Admiral King, right?

A couple of midget subs doesn’t exactly compare to the Kido Butai. Not to mention the entire Combined Fleet.

@@aaroncolby6124 well, the midget subs still exist, Kido Butai not anymore

@@aaroncolby6124 Yes, but the British only had one, count it, one carrier east of the Suez. They'd lost their only other carrier, only a light carrier at that, off of Ceylon.
King asked and expected far too much from the Royal Navy.

@@tams805 around this time there are 3 British carriers in the general Indian ocean area: Illustrious, Indomitable, and Formidable, who were involved in the Indian ocean raid or the invasion of Madagascar. All will remain in the Eastern fleet until at least July. King was seemingly right to ask given that he was leaving the south Pacific exposed to move his carriers to midway, but he also knew from intercepts that the Japanese weren't planning on trying anything there for the time being, whereas burma and the Indian ocean were still open to attack. Ultimately there were downsides either way

@@aaroncolby6124 We know that now, but there was no way for the Royal Navy at that time to know that the attack would be fairly limited. Considering the attack from the IJN came so soon after the British took Madagascar, the decision to keep the fleet there had been justified.
There was actually a fair amount of activity from the IJN off the coast of Madagascar at that time: Five Type-C IJN submarines (with midget submarines) were operating on the East African coast along with two auxillary cruisers (Aikoku Maru and Hokoku Maru) from May to July, 1942.

My family lived on the south shore of Cape Charles VA. My grandma told me stories of watching the ships blowing up and sinking in plain view of the beach. The next day the dead wash up and they call shore patrol. They had to use black out shades all the war. In my youth I SCUBA dived so many war wrecks. Shells still in the holds and every so often a bone of more of a long dead sailor. It was not that long ago really.
