I bet the people still alive in this film are singing a different tune now and wishing their council estates hadn't been pulled down because it was all part of a bigger more sinister plan of social cleansing for the future of hackney & london on a whole!!!
The one that the kids were playing on in the video actually still exists and still has a lot of the same swings. I’m 17 now but used to play in that playground
Childhood Vandalism in London. Broke in to a skeleton key factory in wapping once. Happy memories of when London was an adventure playground of wild bombed out abandoned cool!
Fascinating to hear at 11:35 some vowels which are beginning to sound something like the modern London accent, Multicultural London English. Hasn't it always been assumed that it didn't really develop until well into the 80s? Most participants in this video though speak very traditional Cockney rather than M.L.E.
Wow, nice hear the original East London accent , from the black and white youth, Now in 2017 all the youths from all colours and backgrounds sound like they were born in Jamaica.
6:43 "do you think you would have been better off if you had more discipline?" i think he wants to say "yes!" not that he wants to get "the stick" harder or more often, but that someone, probably male, would impose some structure on him. he's like a dog looking for an alpha leader. could be at school, a family member, or some really cool guy at a boxing club. (hopefully not an alpha who leads a pack about doing robberies or such). someone strong enough to tell him what's-what, and stick to it, no matter what test or challenge Charlie threw back at him. especially when you add that bit from him at 14:20. as of 2018, all the kids featured in here are in their fifties -at least if they've not been forced into dirt naps. hopefully they found and made their ways alright.
1976 was a blistering hot summer, everyone was acting up with the heat!

G P yes I grew up in the 90s when all the kids spoke like Jamaicans, and remember thinking their own Jamaican parents actually sounded more cockney
And they all say ‘like’ and ‘innit’,drives me mad.

What a legend, wonder what became of him.. I still pass by the estate now and then, unfortunately the golden shoe is long gone. Great days..
Guttersnipes and Tearaways. Those "Adventure Playgrounds" wouldn't stand up to Health and Safety standards today.
rumour has it that some of these kids (now men in their 50s) are still doing pretty much the same!!

Up until summer 1975 I played at the rec next to the Kingsmead. That estate was very dodgy especially after dark.

Didn’t many people take advantage of Thatchers right to buy your council house? That’s what I did in a different town.
"Hackney Vandal Patrol" sounds like a graffiti crew. could picture HVP or HVP76 tagged up everywhere
