  • Many business analysts prioritize BA certifications over gaining the domain knowledge they need to work effectively with their customers. This is not an optimum career strategy for most business analysts.
Business analysts who can speak intelligently about the subject matter will always have a better chance of success in their interviews.
This is why I advise business analysts to prioritize gaining domain knowledge ahead of certifications.
In this previous video, I encouraged you to think more broadly about where you invest your time and money when it comes to certifications. I put a lot of emphasis on the importance of domain knowledge because of the value employers see in your ability to speak intelligently with your customers.
Rishi Poptani was kind enough to join us again to help us understand how his capital markets domain knowledge has helped his career. This is a perfect real-life example of why domain knowledge trumps BA certifications.
    Subjects We Covered:
    • What have you been up to since the last time we talked.
    • Can give us some insights into the interview process you went through for your current job?
    • How much of your interview was behavioral vs. domain knowledge?
    • Can you help us understand why you've chosen to specialize?
    • It seems to me like you specialize in Capital Markets, can you help me understand this domain a little better?
    • Do you also specialize in any specific systems?
    • Do you fit more on the business side of things or the systems side?
    and much more...

One interesting insight that I learnt from this video is that not all industries require domain knowledge equally. Thanks for the video.

Excellent Excellent real life BA conversation by Rishi n Emal..love listening to Rishi and congratulations for ur new job. Rishi do u have any junior position under you where I can be part of ur team..? There can't b a better BA mentor than you. I Have read enough of BA content through lot of other BA online channels..but nothing matches this.. Special Thanks to Emal for deep diving into the domain subject..! Also a request to have Rishi for frequent on ur channel.

This conversation resonated so much with me. Why? For the first 12 years I was like Emali( generalist) but past 9 yrs I specialised

Thanks for conducting the interview Emal. Thanks also to Rishi who is so great to listen to.
I have one question and I'll be glad if you can answer that as it will effectively decide my career path.
I currently work in a commercial bank as SME lending officer. I have two years of experience at the bank. I am also a computer science engineer and has previously worked in IT company as developer, closely working with a BA.
Now i quite excited about the BA role in BFSI domain as it will allow me to use my experience both in IT and bank. I can also know about emerging tech and stay connected to finance.
But I am not sure how to go about it. What should i be doing to make that switch given that I have no BA experience.

It's very different and refreshing site of Rishi I saw here. Probably didn't interact or heard Rishi as much in these 2 talks than whilst on the floor, domain and organization! 👍

Hi Emal, I am a IT graduate with a major in web and mobile application development and with sales and customer service background . I am currently preparing for the ECBA certification and looking for an internship or a job as a graduate/junior business analyst. However, I am not getting any interviews or my application does not seem to be strong enough to land my first business analysis role. Would you have any resume tips or any other tips for fresh graduate like us?
