28 Zaandam: Bonifatiuskerk

Het is 31 oktober 1948, drie jaar na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Voor het eerst wordt de gloednieuwe klok van de Bonifatiuskerk geluid, ter ere van de onthulling van het Christus Koningmonument. Het standbeeld is door de parochianen zelf betaald, uit dankbaarheid omdat ze ‘van oorlogsgeweld gespaard’ zijn gebleven.
De oorlog is echter niet aan de kerk voorbij gegaan. Integendeel: het katholieke gebouw bleek een centrum van verzet, waarin pastoor Van der Marck en kapelaan Groot diep in de illegaliteit terecht kwamen, BS commandant overste Wastenecker kantoor hield en waar verzetskrant de Typhoon ontstond…

Most wonderful article, Though I live in the USA I was born in Zaandam in 1941. This article brought back memories during and after the war. We immigrated in 1955. The suffering and hostility none should never be a part of life ever again. In our home we had a bunker build and hid many. I remember visiting the Koppel poort in Amersfoort where my Uncle and Aunt lived which brought many people to safety bij boats through the river that ran under the Koppel port. Let us remember always the horrors of war and though the younger generations have no clue, we should be reminded that to be bound by a few causes calamity among humanity.
