Here is the neglect..On Wikipedias page on history of Baritones, the line states, "The leading Verdi baritones of the 1970s and 1980s were probably Italy's Renato Bruson and Piero Cappuccilli, America's Sherrill Milnes, Sweden's Ingvar Wixell and the Romanian baritone Nicolae Herlea". I take exception with this and think Zancanaros is better than Bruson, Wixell, and Herlea. Milnes never struck me as a good baritone. I did not care for his tone. I have always enjoys Zancanaro voice along with Capucilli, Bastianni and Hrostovosky (yes, I misspelled it :). THose of us who are true opera lovers love Zancanaro....

I share your enthusiasm for Giorgio Zancanaro as well as you lack of enthusiasm for Sherrill Milnes. One of the things I love about Zancanaro's voice & technique is the relative openness of his sound. Milnes' voice, like that of his idol Leonard Warren, was much too covered.

I agree about GZ! He is the most satisfying of those baritones. Can't bear Bruson, Capucilli I find boring, and Wixell, just ok. Milnes impressed, but not crazy about the color. Zancanaro had all the right attributes for a Verdi baritone, and the voice just so beautiful. What an artist!

Heard both Cappucilli & Bruson in Carnegie Hall in the '80's. I was not especially impressed by either of them. Heard Wixell & Milnes at the Met many times. Wixell was a solid singer with a well integrated voice. Milnes voice sounded too manufactured for my taste. Regrettably, I never heard Zancanaro live. Love his recordings, though!

This is top-rank singing by any standard! In response to other comments, I would say that all singers have strengths and weaknesses, and I am not inclined to criticize great singers of the past. It is pretty difficult to find a weakness to point out in Mr. Zancanaro's singing. Perhaps the only things to complain about are that he did not record much (at least by comparison with some baritones), and was not a prominent figure on the opera stages of the USA. I must say that Zancanaro is a joy to hear, demonstrating a voice of ample size, very evenly resonated up and down the range with beautiful chiaroscura, great line and phrasing, and clearly, a fine dramatic sense in his singing! Thanks for this post! It is a virtual textbook for young, aspiring baritones in addition to it fine qualities for pure listening!

@@emailvonsour You have a point here, he sang on the thinnest edge of his vocal cords and occasionally there was just a tiny bit too much air, and the higher notes at the end of the aria would have a very slight hoarseness to it. Not a big deal but if you listen to Bastianini you wouldn't have that little issue.
