It's a timesuck. One second it's 9:30pm, the next second it's 3:58am.
Kidding aside, if you want more followers, if it's for your business, you have to think of it as a hustle. You have to evolve, go with the flow, keep up with the algorithm every quarter, and post every X amount of days at exactly X hour.
I don't want all that. It sounds incredibly exhausting. I shoot for fun and post whenever I get a good one. I got a regular job to pay for my hobbies and I have zero desire to make my hobbies my job.
With that said, much respect to you and all the other artists out there posting and sharing their work. The world still needs artists.
100% and for those who do it as a hobby - have 0 expectations for IG. It didn’t ruin it or make it better for hobbyists in my opinion. It just is. Thoughts?
In my opinion, the issue isn’t necessarily that Reels exist, it’s that you can’t turn them off, get rid of them, or filter them out. They’ve taken over and they’re all competing with one another and for our attention. Still photography requires the viewer to slow down by necessity in order to see the photo at all. Short-form video encourages us to speed up, to consume and create as efficiently as possible in neat little packages. They both have their place, but when shared on the same platform I wholeheartedly believe that still photography takes a back seat to short form video which is training us out of the habit of pausing and lingering a while.
You can tap and hold to pause a reel
100%
meta should have create a separate app for reels like they did with threads.
Instagram is a trash platform in general now. Sadly there is nowhere for photographers to find refuge. Sadly, my Insta will remain dormant as I see no greener pastures in the future.
One persons trash is another’s treasure. Genuinely, hope you all get your photographers platform one day 🙌🏽
Glass is pretty good
I know Japanese photographers use twitter instead
I treat my Instagram as my portfolio. I don’t care about followers. The goal is to take pictures. Have some money from it. Be happy, customers are happy. Everything is all good.
What’s your goal for being on instagram?
They don't ruin photography, but they ruined instagram. Whole app's a joke now
I’m sorry to hear
100%. Can’t wait to see TikTok reels that went viral 3 months ago and miss the photos of my family and friends that they posted 😂 I much prefer TikTok now because it’s not like Insta is giving me the content I want anyway
Most photography related content is about creating gear fomo and fuel consumerism for views. It’s not about the photos anymore.
100%. and it's driven by the audience, not the creators.
yes. next question!
I've always loved photography and making quick videos with a gopro. Combining them has been a bit of a struggle for me. Just haven't quite figured out the workflow and meshing the ideas together yet. Definitely need to get better at my video making and editing. Still working on it and will hopefully get better at it.
Practice makes progress when it comes to video editing.
The good news, you dont need nice gear because the majority of people are viewing the content on broken phone screens while doing something more important like driving. No one cares what gear you have when viewing on a tiny phone screen; while outside at a once in a lifetime event for their child.
What does this have to do with gear?
@Reggiebphoto Well Much photography content was devoted to gear and gear review. Moms scrolling reels dont care if you film it with a pixel 4a or a GFX. Just saying. Dont waste time with gear reviews if you just do reels and tik tok. Quality is trumped by meme ability.
I never said make it about gear.
Yes. Yes it is.
I hate reels. So damn much.
I hear you
I agree!.... My proposal to Instagram... Split the platform into two separate formats. One for photographs, one for videos. Let the users choose what they want to see.
If that happens, and you still don’t get the reach you desire what happene next?
@ I don't know
Everyone feeling the need to share and monetize their shit is ruining photography.
Technology in cameras these days whether it be on your phone, entry level or professional camera and sosial media platforms as Insta has put the creative control into people. The once world space of being a professional photographer diminishes everyday as people have infiltrated the industry just by buying a camera and begin shooting and anyone with some ability begins to call them self a professional or a digital content creator. These days the only professional photographers and videographers are in the corperate world who have a degree, experiance and portfolio to match. Good news is although mobile phones killed the point and shoot camera peoples interest and purchases have still generated demand and revenue for major camera manufactures to invest in R&D and continue to produce new cameras. Even todays technology with mirrorles cameras and Instagram Reels will look strange and outdated in years to come as our world continues to evolve.
Thanks
Great breakdown. Hope people listen if their goal is to grow in these spaces instead of just complain.
Appreciate you Dee. Yeah… complaining is the easy way out.
