If you're having trouble with moss taking over your lawn, it’s normally a sign that the condition of your lawn soil is not the best for grass to grow. As a result, moss is growing in places where you'd rather have grass grow.
Moss can be caused by one of several factors, including low soil pH, a lack of necessary nutrients in the soil, poor drainage, excessive shade, or a combination of a few.
If you’re wondering how you get rid of that moss that's in your lawn naturally, without harming your grass, you’ll be happy to know that as you change the conditions of your soil to prevent moss, you'll also be optimizing the soil to better grow grass.
Here are our favourite tips for getting rid of moss, fast:
Tip 1 The Baking Soda Method
Applying a mixture of baking soda and water to your garden’s moss will make the conditions more alkaline, and since moss prefers a slightly acid environment, this will help to kill the moss. This method works best on small patches of moss. As it’s completely natural, it won't hurt the environment. Just make sure to wear a pair of gloves to prevent skin irritation.
Just make as diluted of a mixture as 1 tablespoon baking soda to 1 gallon of water, or, if the moss is really bad, add dry baking soda straight to the moss. For small patches, start with 3 tablespoons of baking soda to 1 quart of water. Then gradually increase if the moss doesn’t respond.
You can apply this moss killing solution almost any time of the day and any season during the year, but it’s best applied during the late afternoon when the grass is dry during early spring. You might need to apply it two or three times over the course of a week or two to get rid of the moss completely and kill it at its roots.
After the moss has died, rake it up carefully and discard it in your gardening bin.
Tip 2 The Soap Method
The baking soda mentioned might be effective as a short-term solution, but you can achieve a longer-term success by mixing 3-4 ounces of dish soap with 1 gallon of water and spraying the mixture generously onto the moss patch.
As with the baking soda method, you will probably need to apply this mixture several times to kill the moss from its roots. Once the moss is dead, follow the same steps to remove it, carefully raking it to avoid the spread of spores, then disposing of it in your gardening bin.
Tip 3 The Lime Method
Unlike baking soda and water, lime doesn't directly kill moss very quickly. Instead, lime helps to balance out the pH of the soil and make it slightly alkaline, and since moss prefers a slightly acidic environment, applying lime regularly over time can help to kill off moss over the course of several months. It’ll also make the soil more inhabitable for grass.
Tip 4 Increase Your Garden’s Exposure To Sunlight
As moss prefers minimal sunlight, you may notice the mossiest patches in your lawn are those that are in shady areas. If that's the case, make sure to trim any trees or other plants that could be causing excessive shade. You could also replace your grass for a more shade-tolerant grass type, which may help to curb your moss issue.
Tip 5 Don't Water Your Lawn As Often
If you're someone who regularly waters your lawn, the growth of moss is probably a sign that you're watering too much. Decrease your quantity of watering and see if that stops the moss from spreading. If it does, simply carry out the baking soda method to remove the od moss, and providing you stick to a less frequent watering schedule, no new moss should form.
Tip 6 Improve Your Lawn’s Drainage
If your lawn only gets water from rain, and yet it still seems to be unusually damp, you may need to improve the drainage in the lawn. It’s simple enough to create ditches or canals to direct the water into a larger ditch or a pond, but when your lawn is too small for this solution, you can try aerating it instead.
Tip 7 Aerate Your Lawn
As any groundsman or gardener would tell you, simply poking holes in your lawn can dramatically help water to drain properly, if done right. When you create holes in the ground, it gives rainwater a place to go. It also prevents soil compaction due to foot traffic, which is another cause of poor drainage. You could even fill in the holes with sand to make the soil more absorbent.

Ultimately, if you have a moss problem in your lawn, you first need to figure out what could be preventing grass from growing properly in the first place. That’s the only way you’ll keep the moss away for good, after using the methods in this video to get rid of it in the short-term.

Moss is ground growers; mountain growers. It only grow where nothing else wants to grow and needs clear ground space without leaves or othet debris. I love my moss patches under huge trees in front of my property and are going to give them a rock border. Usually cant wait for the rain to watch them open up and have a carnaval of greens as they dine on air nutrients with the sun. They are getting higher and higher as the grow the ground beneath them. Beautiful, misunderstood beneficial builders of nature, habitat of anything that would hide in them. And they dont need mowing at all.

I put baking soda on moss. It works very well thanks. But now after removing the dead moss, I see dirt instead of grass so should I put grass seeds to grow it again?
It depends on where you live and what kind of grass you want to grow. A good general rule though. If you plan to use cold season grass that stays green year round you'll want to seed in the fall, if you want warm season grass that goes dormant in the winter months, plant in the late spring early summer. However, you need to prepare your yard, use the baking soda trick as you have, then spread some lime, let that sit for a week, like again, sit another week, then aerate, seed, and spread some straw lightly over the seeds to keep them in place. Water in the mornings only, Scott's makes a watering tracker that can help you terrifically. Scott's also making a fertilizer called starting food that is meant to be applied along with your seeds in a granulated form. This will help put nutrients back into your soil.

I actually want moss instead of a grass lawn so I’ll try doing the opposite of this video haha. It makes so much sense to me. Moss is great because you don’t have to mow, saving time and avoiding the noise and air pollution of a mower. Plus moss feels great barefoot.

Or just...keep the moss? Why strive for a boring, monocultural grass desert? The biodiversity moss provides is environmentally beneficial. Mix in some white/dutch clover, and you have a pollinator-attracting, healthy lawn that requires very little mowing/maintenance.
It is probably a terrible thing to disturb moss. Pretty sure it balances the ecosystem in ways that other organisms can not which means you are preventing a valuable aspect of nature. Also moss is better than grass where a bunch of dangerous insects will hide.
I haven't seen lawn full of moss before. And I will get trouble with my community policies if it's full of moss

Makes sense. Moss also produces lot more oxygen than grassm But when it comes to vegetable gardening for better outcomes you would definitely want to get rid of Moss.

@Queen Mantis why dont you try and plant in them. They keep the soil secure, moisture in and only need air nutrients.
So I have a backyard loaded with moss, thick moss. Going into the winter I used a Scott’s product to try to kill it (with the idea of seeding the lawn after). Well it’s spring, the moss is still green. If i lift it up there’s nice flat clear dirt.
Now all of that said, I’m not growing any vegetables & only wanted grass because I’m condition to like grass more than moss but... maybe I should flip completely and embrace the moss? Idk who I’m talking to here but if any die hard moss-lovers want to convert me, I’m all ears
