- In this episode of "The Way I See It," Janna Levin brings her celestial expertise to Vincent van Gogh’s star-filled vision, in conversation with senior curator of Drawing and Prints Jodi Hauptman. Levin helps us see how certain features of the night sky, including “turbulent air,” the light from a star, and the planet Venus, are rendered visible by Van Gogh’s brush. She also points out that her approach is not so different from Van Gogh’s: “People who observe the world, whether they are artists or scientists, are always on the cusp of what they see and then what is internal.”

I don't think I've heard a better critique of Starry Night. I love it when science and art dance.
The universe is not stagnant or stale, it is alive and glowing.

Van Gogh studied colour through the analysis of precious stones and in this painting he carried out research into blue with lapislazzuli , ( Blue of the abyss ).
This is a wonderful concept and well executed! It’s so refreshing hearing another perspective, I love how cerebral she is and I’m truly grateful to all those who took part in this 🙏🏻
On a side note I’m enamored of the Rousseau in the background...my mom made a mosaic of that for our shower wall when I was a kid, I’d kill to still have it 😂

With respect in this piece Professor Janna Levin, in fact the three of them, bring little to one of the most profound paintings in art history, if anything, they dull it down. Vincent Van Gogh’s painting is cosmic, it touches both heaven and earth, it encourages us to consider the eternal in the temporariness of our earth bound day to day existence, to contemplate another world, the next world.
Not as in this case to trap ourselves in the mediocre and mundane when faced with such profound work.
Over analyzing what Vincent’s intentions were 😁
Emotions can’t be put in words
I feel like I understand the painting. Like I saw something like that once inside of my dream. I was looking out the window and the sky looked soooo beautiful.. Colours I’ve never seen before. And I saw the sky moving in circles just how the starry night is, although it was sunset, going dark. And I saw this huge star the brightest star, it looked like it was falling down to earth and these asteroids coming down as well. They sky looked so alive, and it kept changing colours.. It was so beautiful I could still see it in my head. I wish I could paint it but I don’t really know how to paint, and if I tried to I don’t think I would be able to find the right colours unless I have to mix two colours or more together just to try at least get the colours I seen. I swear the sky looked so beautiful. There were colours I’ve never seen before. I immediately thought is this heavens sky? Lol
I highly recommend the movie “Loving Vincent”. 🎨

I was 6 inches away from that painting "Starry Night" looking at it.
The paint is VERY thick. It's not like paint on the walls of your home.
If you were to cut the painting in half, I would say the paint is about half an inch thick. I understand that is oil.
But at 0:40 you see the Postmaster. MOMA paid $100. million for that one.
The only way to see this painting without a million people around it. Also Vincent was connected to the cosmos in ways that ordinary mortals can not comprehend!

I think i might have solved the message behind this magnificent painting. I will take it to the grave with me and I will ask Vincent if i were right :)
Millions of people today like his art but do not understand today's self-taught artists. This is exactly how the art advisors, art dealers and art collectors react.

Sky no more belongs only to the artists ; at that very moment every artist in the whole wide world knows that they are always men in the ISS staring at the earth, such a painting couldn't be painted nowadays according to me
It is a shame an astrophysicist to miss mentioning that today's science sees very similar patterns of swirls looking up the sky.
