When a loved one is dying, it can feel a little scary broaching the conversation with your kids. Most parents have no clue how to approach the conversation about death with kids because it's not something we've ever been taught. It's also normal for parents to want to protect their kids by not talking about your loved one's death or impending death thinking that this makes it easier on them. From all my experiences around kids and death, as well as all the research I've done on this subject, it's been shown time and again that talking to kids openly and honestly about a loved one's illness and using the "D" words (death, dying, died), is more beneficial for a child as it allows them a safe space to ask questions and learn from you.
In this video, I share one simple thing that you might not realize as you debate how to approach your kids about a dying loved one. You are welcome to use this as a way of explaining what death is and what it is not.
