I heavily disagree. Many PhD’s in any of the natural sciences or engineering are geniuses. Ultimately it depends on the individual, but I’d argue that genius scientists like Einstein, Feynman, and Ed Witten are more geniuses than 99.999% of neurosurgeons.

When he coming a Neurosurgeon this will come up in one's head. The fear of accidentally taking a life, but as other comments have stated, it will take 15 to 16 years to become a neurosurgeon and by the time you are certified you will have plenty of experience. Now that doesn't mean that risk is eliminated completely. It will always be there but you must do your work calm and as you have learned to do it over all your years of training to put fort the best work possible.
I am going into high school next year and have always been very interested in medicine and especially the brain. Bro. I'm not trying to dissuade you but come on. Frankly nothing before highschool matters, but just chill with saying you'll be a neurosurgeon. You have to be the best in your high school, get into a top 15 college (not a requirement but makes getting into MD easier), be the best at your college (don't get distracted- so many do), kill your MCAT, get into a top 20 medical school (basically a requirement to get into Neurosurg), demolish your step exams, and then match into some of the most selective residency programs. On top of all of this you need a ton of EC, research, good bedside manner, interviewing skills, and a million other things. Not to mention once you get to the point where it's an option (my current predicament), you might think to yourself, hey I want a life outside work and to be able to live while I'm still young. My point is, enjoy your freshman year of high school, Neurosurg is so ridiculously far ahead that you need to take it 1 step at a time.
When I was younger I had to have surgery and all remember Is how nice that doctor was to me. He made me so comfortable, like I can’t express how much that stuck with me to this day and why I’m working so hard rn in college to become a doctor to do the same for everyone else!
The US Navy has a program where they will pay for ALL your college medical expenses (Tuition, Room and Board, etc.) and in return all you have to do is give them the same amount of time they gave you... be a navy physician for on average 5-6 years. making around 100k.
I looked into the military into paying for my medical school. Financially it's not a smart decision, but it definitely a viable path for those who are looking to serve their country. Especially if you intend to match into surgery or another high paying specialty, you'll net more money total by simply taking loans and paying them off (eat 400,000K+ in debt and then start making 500,000+ as a practicing MD post-residency), rather than having 0 debt and then making 100K for 6 years.
10 hour surgery?! Wow! That must have been a tough thing for the neurosurgeon to do, although I could be wrong, one of my friends is an ear, nose, and throat doctor and he one time had to perform a 14 hour surgery.

Surgeons do not take breaks while operating. They will only run to the restroom if the case is running over 12 hours. I’m an OR nurse and do Spine surgery. I have done 14 hour long cases and the surgeon never left any time.

I am pre med right now and working towards becoming an anesthesiologist. there is a wonderful neurosurgeon in my hometown who lets me shadow him in the OR and it is truly an amazing experience!

4 years of college, assuming its around $40k and assuming you don't go back for your masters. Then 4 years medical school, $280k taking out in student loans, plus interest. $320k in debt already. Then if you want to be a surgeon? 5 years of Internship (you will do surgery with real patients under supervision. your pay, since you're not a doctor just yet, you won't be 6 figures yet, $50k at most) after residency your salary gets an extra digit, you'll start off wih roughly $195k still in debt tho

I am 12 and this is now my dream job (thanks Grey's Anatomy) I am currently when not in school studying the brain and how it works I found this great TH-cam channel that talks about the brain (ASAPscience) and I also am watching Brain Games on Netflix which also talks about the brain, I find passion in learning the brain and hoping I will go to college to get my Medical Degree or Doctorate Degree which I think is about 8-12 years of college which I am ok with. This stuff is amazing and I hope it becomes my reality someday, I know it's stressful and you are on work for LOADS of hours but getting the satisfaction to say to a parent your child is safe will be all worth it. Nikki N Sorry but you definitely have to be smart. You can’t get into medical school without a superb GPA, MCAT score, shadowing, volunteering, research, etc. The prerequisites are hard classes. Many consider Organic Chemistry to be the hardest class in all of college. Once in medical school, you’ll be studying about 60 hours a week, every single week for 4 years, sometimes a lot more than that. You have to take two additional standardized tests like the MCAT that determine your ability to choose a certain medical specialty. Neurosurgery is by far one of the hardest to match into. There is simply no way to become a neurosurgeon on hard work alone, or on brains alone. You need both. And even then, people that have both can’t survive it. The residency is an additional 7 years working on average 88 hours a week (this is what programs aim for. Some go over). Assuming you survive ALL of that, congratulations, you are one of the most prestigious careers known to humankind and easily making 7 figures a year while having a lifestyle you choose.

Again, dermatologists make 350,000-500,000 a year, and often work half the number of hours the neurosurgeons do. There are a number of specialties that medical doctors can go into to make lots of money and not have to work nearly as much as neurosurgeons.
That’s your fault, if true. Work at a level 1 trauma center and yeah Neurosurgery is your life. Work in private practice and it’s up to you how much you work.

Anton ask a medical student what is the “luxurious lifestyle” specialty. They will all tell you it’s dermatology.
