    I bought a first press mint minus UK Vertigo of Paranoid about 10 years ago before they got crazy pricey
    Oh my God it sounds so much more dynamic. Sabbath is in your room

    I've owned both the 1st press and 71 repress of BS BS and they sounded identical. So I sold the 1st. My Paranoid is a WWA and nr mint. These can be found cheap in the UK. Sound fantastic!

    I too have a listening room with lots of glass, a 10' window on the right side and a sliding glass door on the left. The previous owner would have lived in a glass house if she could have. GIK free standing acoustical panels are your friend if you can stand the appearance of them. I've got 4 of the 4" bass trap panels at the speaker first reflection points. They've done wonders to clean up the sound, getting rid of most of the haze and shimmer in the midrange. (Treating the ceiling reflection points got rid of 90% of what was left.). If you can't fit the 4" they also make 2" panels although those won't help with bass bloat.

    The German pressings with the spaceship label are really really good if finding UK's is too much of a hassle. The color tone on the label is a bit different from the UK spaceship, which has really bright and sparkling colors. I have a few UK swirls of the 1st Sabbath as well as a UK spaceship, and to me they are just as good. And that goes for the German swirls as well - a bit cheaper and at least to my ears, excellent sounding pressings.

      I have a German Vertigo of “Paranoid” and I agree-it sounds phenomenal. And although I do hope to have Vertigo’s of the first four Sabbath records some day I have to say my domestic green label OG Warner copies sound pretty awesome for filler in the mean time. The US originals were cheap when I got them and are actually not bad player copies til I eventually can upgrade.

    I have a genuine NM UK Vertigo first press of Black Sabbath's Paranoid. After going through my multi-stage cleaning and preservation process, I was completely blown away at how this album sounds. I had to pick my self up off the floor after hearing it, just absolutely spectacular. It is probably the best sounding album in my entire vinyl album collection. There's a reason why the first press of this album goes for big money. I seriously doubt your second generation version can match it, but it's perfectly fine to buy in at whatever price level you want or can afford. 👍👍👍

    • @poetryonplastic
      @poetryonplastic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Genuine question, for most of these records, they are made using the same metal stampers as the first pressing; What audible differences have you heard between these first pressings and second pressings with the same matrix numbers? Is it a factor of the quality of the pressing job? Surely the vinyl formula didn’t change much from 70 to 71 on the same label?

    • @audiophileman7047
      @audiophileman7047 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@poetryonplastic Stampers wear as you use them. For example, to maintain the best quality, Analogue Productions/QRP limits their pressings to "less than 1,000 copies per stamper". Ever use a razor knife with a fresh blade? It cuts much better than one that's been used for a while. The edge wears down. It's the same idea with the stampers. Though your second issue may sound very good, it's the first press that'll sound the best as long as the first press records were pressed well. I have an AP/QRP pressing of Sabbath's Paranoid album. It's not as good as the first press UK I have. Everything is there on the first press and it packs some really nice punch. I'm just so impressed with the fidelity of it. The guy I bought it from said that he didn't play his records very much, usually less than ten times, so the condition of it may also be helping the sound too. All I can tell you is that it sounds absolutely fabulous! 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

    • @poetryonplastic
      @poetryonplastic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@audiophileman7047 yes your correct the stampers do not last forever, but I assume that these companies weren’t using overworn stampers for the repressing. But being able to compare probably helps, I’m sure the parts were not as pristine, but I also have to think that they probably made so many stampers that there’s also a chance they had unused extras.

The first 3 albums did cost a lot.£££ My Master of Reality box is flat also but came complete with the poster still seal in its polythene bag. I have the UK first pressing of Heaven and Hell but have not heard any other pressings of that album to compare it to. I had all the NEMS pressings of the early albums back in the 1980’s but didn’t take care of them when I first started buying records. I can only find NEMS pressings of Sabotage but still have to buy one.

    Thanks for your thrifty thoughts.
    I have a mint first USA press of “Black Sabbath”, that I personally bought the first week it arrived.
    Many years later, after hearing that first UK pressings were the way to go, I found a EX first “Phillips” pressing for only 20 dollars.
    I was expecting the UK to sound better, but to my surprise, my U.S. green label Warner sounded warmer, fuller and more dynamic.
    A few years ago, my feelings were backed up when Bob Bradley, on TH-cam, had a round table discussion, where he and one other, also felt the US first press was better.
    They also felt that the other early Sabbath, U.S. pressed albums, sounded better.
    The only other B.S. I have, is the very first UK press of Paranoid, which I think sounds swell, but haven’t yet compared it to a first U.S. press.
    p.s. I was also surprised that the UK had a different tune to start side two:”Evil Women”.
    I’m glad that Warner used “Wicked World” to start side two!
    I still have the UK first press, but keep it only for the gatefold.
    One other cool thing about the US first, is the different way they list the names of the band, for side one, on the label: all selections written by Toni Iommi, John Osbourne, Terence Butler, William Ward.

    Do any of you check the waveforms of what you're listening to? Most CORPORATE "remasters" since 1994 have been compressed and clipped (distorted) and presented as a 'fresh new remaster', or a "50th Anniversary special deluxe edition" of the music. The resulting music is fatiguing to listen to, all the tracks have the same volume, and all the life has been crushed out of the music. Vinyl original pressings are fine. Just saying, because I look at music waveforms ALL DAY for the last 21 years, and CDs after 1994, plus ALL '50th Ann', 'remastered's, and all the rest, are crap for the recycle yard. Ciao! Love from Italia.
