I was also confused at that scene, but in my opinion it could be very well that Mary's soul was unrested, as Fred points out that she died unjustly. It's possible that Alice is seeing Mary's avenging soul as a hallucination if not Fred. The drugs are already pointed out as being hallucinogenic, and that took an effect on Journalist, making her see Mary's soul as running towards her but she was actually long dead. Also, if I'm not wrong, the drugs also make participants hostile to each other, which could be another reason why Alice saw Fred as Mary and these are, in fact, all her delusions.
