In my view, I think the video was loaded from a different concert. It was NOT the real time performance of Butterfly Lovers. The background music was just the original CD sound track. It was not a live concert in China at all!
Are you sure this melody was initially composed for the famous movie you mentioned and the legend of butterfly lovers originated in or started to become famous for the famous movie in Taiwan?
He looks like he only played it a few times if at all. The way he was looking back and forth between the music tells me there was a high chance he was sight reading.
I think it's because many Chinese grow up knowing this song/listening to it, so they have all the dynamics/variations in tempo/right feeling all engraved into their memory. From personal experience, I had a grandfather who played violin and he always played this song at family gatherings (birthdays, Christmas, etc). This version may be lacking feeling, but I don't know if it is that. I think it's because he does not slow down at places most Chinese know you ought to. (end of intro)
