In outback Australia we use these evaporative aircons alot. Ours look different with the wood pads. We use a netted wood shave that looks like a pillow. One thing my unit had was a small water discharge hose that was around 30 metres long that drained when the water pump was running. It prevented any hard buildup inside the cooler and watered trees in our yard. Had it around 10 years and never had any calcium or scale inside.
Thank you so much for this video! I've got the same exact cooler on my roof. My landlords haven't been over here since before the pandemic ever started so I pretty much do it all myself. Problem is I completely forgot to go up and put the winterized cover on the cooler this last winter and when I went up there to get the cooler up and running the other day the big blower isn't working so there's no air. I'm assuming it needs to be oiled and was already assuming that and went up there last night to oil everywhere I could and couldn't figure out how to get the blower side of the cooler open in order to reach it even though I know I have accessed that side before. Now after seeing u lift that 1st panel off the blower side I feel stupid 🤦♀️ lol. In my own defense though I was up there in the dark so that's probably why I wasnt able to see that it came off like that lol. Anyway , after watching you video I can see Ive got alot more work to do up there. Wish me luck and thanks again lol.
Yes, they are! I live back in AZ, but I did live in Colorado for 6 yrs, and that is all you really need there for cooling. Same for Utah, where I've also lived and have lots of family there that have evap coolers
That was the best informative video I've seen on our swamp cooler pads we have to punch them down a little bit on the top so that the tube will fit in and I'm wondering on the tray where the pads sit how far should the water be below the bottom of the cooler pads or the top of the tray where they sit I'm not sure which thank you
Not difficult when you start with a unit well-cared for and easy to prep. Most homeowners neglect their evaporative coolers. Have worked on several hundred, and the only units as clean as the one you showed were basically new.

you forgot to mention that the media pads face a certain way. the painted stripe faces you and is closer to the bottom of the cooler. it appears you installed them correctly, which is good.
Good video I use shop vac to clean water pan after scraping loose all dirt / crap. Water distribution tube -remove cap at end , tap w/ screw driver to loose deposits and take sharp point to unclog/clean holes. Leaf blower to clean pads of dirt. Dont forget the corrct way to position pads back in. Oil bearings again.
Evaporative Cooling is different. Direct cooling as in video adding moisture to the air. Indirect cooling from industry leaders with Wet bulb temperature. Dew-point regenerative indirect evaporative cooling from Maisotsenko Cycle.
I would just get this swamp cooler removed and dumped in the bin..lol. Get a self clean unit,with auto weatherseal..Auto dumping. like a Brivis, Breezair,Bonaire,Braimar just to name a few Aussie Brands.
Distribution ductwork from the cooler, and exhaust ductwork with a central exhaust fan sucking out the warm air, should at least help with the problem at 6:30.
I think if I had this and the AC unit on that it probably wouldn't work the AC unit so hard. it's like having two AC units but one with less power. takes forever for the central air unit to cool the house. especially on super hot days. replaced the motor and upgraded the fan and cleaned the whole unit. blows super cold but house stays hot until night
are these worth it in your opinion on really hot days 100 degrees also if 1 hp motor would be better than the standard 3/4 hp motor? in terms of more cooling
I just bought a wet section to my 16yr old Mastercool evap as the old one rusted too far to fix. $324. I see that aerocool has a plastic insert to the wet section. which means no rust out and possibly lots cheaper to replace/repair. I wonder as I can't find one for Mastercool but the same design.features. You know of any plastic inserts for the Mastercool with 8" pads. 42" wide and 17 inches deep. i'm 5 weeks out from a Phoenix summer.
The new wet section comes painted and sealed. My old old one with real hard water lasted 16 years. My problem was I got too old to really climb up on the roof and empty it at seasons end. and so the water would just sit and rust the unit. It pays not to be lazy. But on any new house that AREO cool sounds like the cats meow being plastic inserted. What I should do is produce a aftermarket plastic insert for the mastercool and sell it to people who don't want to pay the $300+ for a new wet side.
I'm in Phoenix too just rebuilt my 10 year old master cool 6500 down draft this year I hadn't run a bleed or drain pump for last 5 years build up was so bad had to use pool acid to clean the wet section I tossed the pads out they were hard as a rock. The pool acid was harsh but it got the job done wasn't as bad working with then I thought gloves and goggles all I needed. I was surprised wasn't even any rust under all that buildup I had even bought a can of rubberized paint I returned the pool acid cleaned so well the bottom looked new. There is a local evap cooler store here they sell a stainless Steel wet section comes with new pad, pump, and everything in wet section little high priced $600 I was about to get it but changed my mind after seeing how clean mine was. It's like new now replaced bearings, belt, pulley, and installed new electrical box and thermostat getting 78F in my house 111 today 8% humidity. I wired in a purge pump to my new electronic thermostat has a purge pump feature turns on 2 times a day. I plumbed the drain line so it drains into a 5 gallon bucket has a hose at the bottom goes on my lawn. When the season is over ill just remove the bucket I had it running onto my lawn but from the roof it makes a hole in the grass plus I like the option of letting it run into the rocks if I drain some cooler cleaner out. This video didn't see purge pump or bleed line he must get lot of build up that pad needs cleaning. I plan on running a bottle of cooler cleaner once a month keep the new pads really clean.
I've got a MasterCoolin Tucson and was wondering the same thing! Why don't they have plastic inserts. Mines about 13 years old and is just starting to rust on the sides

Not sure how many years the single pad lasts. We only lived in this rental for a year, but the pad had been in for at least 2 or 3 years according to the landlord.
I would disagree that, "the problem with evap coolers is they tend to cool the rooms closer to them..." More so, the problem with the people who run evap coolers in their home is that they do not properly control the airflow/pressure inside the home so that the evap cooler can be most efficient. Not only does proper airflow allow for the best temperature drop in the home, it also is much easier on the cooler parts. The motor will last longer without a pressurization to work against or lack of any resistance to over work itself. Also, less water will be used (cause of less use altogether), therefore, less buildup to clean off. Less wear on the bearings, too! Of course, this is coupled in balance with proper belt tension, which should be set by the correct amp draw of the motor (while the unit is closed up).
@@lenoregorman4688 the flux of air pressure can be increased slightly at the beginning to help push out the hot air. Windows closer to the swamp cooler do not need to be open as much as Windows further away from the swamp cooler. Ideally, attempt to minimize the pressure inside the house without losing that pressure. This can be easily checked by holding a flame up to each window. Aim to achieve a slight, constant, steady pull of the flame.

Can they be scrapped and cleaned and reused? Mine do have what looks like some calcium deposits but it's not rock hard. I can break them off with my hands. Again I ask. What do you mean steam? There is no steam associated with an evap cooler. Why do people get so perplexed about how an evap works? It's very simple. The pads get wet by the pump. The blower blows air through the wet pads through the house. That's it! It's the same concept if you lick your arm and blow on it. Very simple.
Opening windows to exhaust some air outdoors on an evaporative cooler is not an option. It needs to be done for proper operation and best results. I know of two air balancing methods. 1. Window Area/CFM Method. 2. Tissue Suction Method. Refer to the manual for your unit for proper air balancing steps.
No cost if you do it yourself, unless you decide to buy a new filter. If you hire a plumber, the last plumber I hired to do work inside the house was $125 per hour.
Is there a video for adjusting if water goes in the cooler or not. My swamp cooler's water is connected by my hose. And i'm sure i turn the water of so my cooler is just pushing hot air. .
my water distribution tubes are filled with what feels to be sand and it's not allowing to wet the pads so it's just warm air coming out of the vents.. how do I clean them out?
You could try pulling the hoses off one at a time and flushing them out. Also check the slits at the top of the panels and make sure they're not plugged. You should be able to run the pump only setting to saturate the pads.
@@Iscaper Thank you. We converted it to an AeroCool so we don't have a pump option anymore. I did disconnect and clean one tube, but the other is connected in the drain pan but to nothing on the other end. is that right? sorry, new to doing this myself! :)

There are holes on top of a pvc pipe that spray up into the hood and they plug with minerals and have to be cleaned out with a drill bit or properly sized punch.
I believe I have the same cooler, it had the same decal and looks the same. How do I know what pads replacement to buy? I bought some from home Depot but they are short in height. Can anyone help?

The only way I know how to fix a noisy motor is to replace it. I would double check that the belt or blower isn't partially responsible first.

Evaporative coolers are the way to go! Save much more money on utility bills than running an A/C all day. They're great to have here in Colorado.

I have the same swamp cooler and I struggle to find these types of filters. The one I did find they had to custom cut and want like $150.
I put the whole freezer inside my swamp cooler,It worked very well and now I'm freezing to death inside my home.

Any cooling on a 100 degree day would be a help. A 3/4 hp motor should be adequate for most swamp coolers.

How do you operate it? Do you turn on the pump for a while before turning to cool? I can't find anywhere how to ACTUALLY use it!
Turn the switch to Pump Only for 5 minutes to soak the pads, then turn the switch to low or high cool.

Do you have to keep windows open while operating?
@@ShaktiJ Yes, for two reasons. One, it will get humid in your house, and two, it will put a strain on the blower.

Sounds like a wiring issue. The motor and switch have high and low terminals. Did the installer connect these correctly? I would give them a call.

I've sprayed mine out. I think if you're careful not to tear the element a bit of scrapping won't hurt. It's worth a try.

how much does it cost for a maintenance to get to cooler going ?
No cost if you do it yourself, unless you decide to buy a new filter. If you hire a plumber, the last plumber I hired to do work inside the house was $125 per hour.

No, just in the spring when you first start up the cooler.
Is there a video for adjusting if water goes in the cooler or not. My swamp cooler's water is connected by my hose. And i'm sure i turn the water of so my cooler is just pushing hot air.

Water in a swamp cooler sits in the bottom with a float valve that shuts the water off at a certain level. You could pull a panel off and check.
Is there a front and back to the media or doesen't it matter?
Yes. There is an airflow arrow on the sides of the pads. Arrow points into the cooler.

The cooler legs have been installed incorrectly and in the wrong positions.
my water distribution tubes are filled with what feels to be sand and it's not allowing to wet the pads so it's just warm air coming out of the vents.. how do I clean them out?
You could try pulling the hoses off one at a time and flushing them out. Also check the slits at the top of the panels and make sure they're not plugged. You should be able to run the pump only setting to saturate the pads.
@@Iscaper Thank you. We converted it to an AeroCool so we don't have a pump option anymore. I did disconnect and clean one tube, but the other is connected in the drain pan but to nothing on the other end. is that right? sorry, new to doing this myself! :)

How do you clean out the water distributor if you’re not getting even Saturation on the pads?
There are holes on top of a pvc pipe that spray up into the hood and they plug with minerals and have to be cleaned out with a drill bit or properly sized punch.

I believe I have the same cooler, it had the same decal and looks the same. How do I know what pads replacement to buy? I bought some from home Depot but they are short in height. Can anyone help?
You may need to measure the old pads to get the right replacements.
