      That is a reasonable expectation, that God should take care of it. Because it was God who commanded people and designed us to multiply. But we should do what we can, to take care of our growing families. And in other cultures, maybe children and large families are more values, and accumulating material wealth, not as much. Also, huge numbers of people have objections to birth control, so all the more reason why they feel no obligation to somehow "limit" their rising family size.

      Are you talking about your own children, or about other people's children? Government welfare is wrong, because charity by definition has to be voluntary. We are supposed to help the poor, but the Bible does not provide for a civil penalty for failing to do so. Government is not to use its "power of the sword" to force people to be charitable, but rather we have to answer to God for that failing.
      And if we are talking about your own children, many people believe that God may indeed take some financial responsibility and financially bless people who have faith to accept his children. I certainly believe it is okay to pray something along this line, "God you gave me these many children. Would you please give me some ideas or some job opportunity or tell me what business that I should start, so that I can better support them?" For many people, it somehow works out. Even if not, who would sell their children for money? Children are valued regardless of whether there is a big house for them, great education opportunities, and all that.
      BTW, many large families in other countries, are not receiving any sort of government assistance. So how are you supposedly paying for them? And all the wealth of the world, truly does belong to God. Back in the time of the kings, the king pretty much "owned" all the land, supposedly. Even now, the corrupt government pretends like they own most all the land, and you have to pay your annual land bribe "property tax" if you want to go on pretending like you own it.

Asteroid coming, The Super Thaw, complete with a rise of both meters and degrees, has been bumped up to 2030, Mass migration, Earth signals reach the first known possible inhabitable planet in 2029. Europe is suffocating, Switzerland, France and Italy have about 10yrs left until people start flooding the alps looking for water, then Canada will see the largest population shifts in human history as probably a billion+ people will flock there, enough to overwhelm the gov't and disband it, then set up new nations. Same will happen to Russia. China has already started on both countries, give em about, mmm idk, ten years, lol.

    Not to mention that overpopulation will cause many people to live in poverty. More people applying for jobs then jobs are available. I am 23 years old and am struggling because there are over 1,000 people fighting for the same position that I want. More people consuming makes food and gas prices skyrocket. Because there isnt enough to sustain everyone.
    But I'M the selfish one because I dont want kids. Who would bring kids into this world when you know that in about 20 years it will be even harder for them than it was for me to get started? My 1 bedroom apartment is $900 a month and I dont even live in a nice area. But I had to fight for this because I didnt want to live in the street and someone else take it from me. And in a few years, it will be even harder for me to survive. A degree means nothing nowadays because EVERYONE has a degree in my field, making me useless because someone got to the job first. Someone who was 10 years older than me and has the right to survive just like I do. Degrees mean nothing because there are 1,300,000 who have the same degree in computer engineering as me. And we all know there isnt 1.3million jobs open for everyone to work.
    We need to stop reproducing. We need to start adopting. Why bring a child into the world and consume the resources that someone already born could use?

      yep. why people don't understand basic supply/demand economics is beyond me. 1 million people living in the Bay Area = decent housing costs. 10 million people= reallly high housing costs. I don't understand how the same liberals fighting for reasonable housing prices are also totally in favor of immigration and the increased population that goes along with it. Or why conservatives who don't believe in social welfare can't figure out that birth control/fewer children will help keep people out of poverty.

And admittedly I would always think to myself, well if everyone starts dying from overpopulation, won't it just correct itself by doing so. 7 billion to 10 billion and back to 7 billion. But climate change effects on crops, soil, and water are also an issue that would compound with the overpopulation, so I feel it's better to be concerned about it than not be concerned. Heck if there are less people, we get a bigger slice of the pie, so why don't we take action to reducing it though having less children. If overpopulation will just lead the the unnecessary death of those who are born into a planet with 10 billion people, why don't we just take a course to correct it. Prevent deaths from preventing people from choosing to have no more than one child, or adopt one of the millions that want a home. Seeing as climate change and overpopulation compound each other's effects, I say let's take course to correct it. Getting rid of fossil fuels is good, but many machines like planes and etc. physically can't do so. So if we wan't to counteract both issues at once, it would be great. Most of them are low-income and typically on government benefits. My experience e over the last twenty-plus years is the government offers cash incentives to States who foster and adopt children. There is no abuse or neglect in most of these cases. Elders are taken from their families and forced into state-funded facilities and their assets are seized from the family's inheritance and given to the states. It is all about the money! The Bible says that a person's soul is of greater value than the entire world.
      Use some constructive imagination. Billions more people can fit or be made to fit onto the planet. And nature is resilient. Nature is not at all worried about the huge size of the world population. In fact, nature wants for us to grow even huger. We see in nature, that life seeks to spread into almost every niche that it can. Why not all the more so, with supposedly intelligent human life?

    a few things to note
    my understanding is that growth is slowing and population will peak in the next 50 - 150 years,
    most of the current growth is because people are living longer.
    most of the environmental degradation is driven by us greedy consumers, not poor third world families
    finally, if we didnt waste so much food and if we ate less meat there would be more than enough food to feed 10 billion people at current production levels

    • @AyeCarumba221
      @AyeCarumba221 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      You are missing the point completely sir or madam. The point here is not CAN we feed 10 billion people, or 15 billion or 20 billion. Probably we could feed that many if we needed to. But whether or not we can feed them is a moot point really, because environmental degradation will occur, whether or not we can successfully feed those people. Also your point of the degradation occurring because of western consumption, is also really not relevant. For example, say we cut our consumption in half. But then the population triples. In that case, you were still behind. You can continue to cut your consumption, and recycle all you want, but unchecked the growth of the population will eventually outstrip the savings you have gained. You are not looking at the big picture, but you’re doing what most humans tend to do is looking at only a micro picture that doesn’t tell the entire story. Humans must connect the dots. Unchecked, or uncontrolled growth is not sustainable indefinitely.

      Many people still believe children to be wondrous blessings from God, and how do people conveniently forget that huge numbers of people have objections to birth control?
      I very much agree with people having large families, because every human life is of immense value and sacred. Human life is beautiful and amazing, and human life should grow and spread however much possible, however much that God may allow for us to grow.
      As a pro-lifer, I also have many objections to birth control, so I do not at all expect people to keep their natural family growth to be more so "under control", since God deliberately commanded and designed for people to multiply. Also, big families better socialize children to thrive in the increasingly populous world to come.

      Well at least somebody still loves their children enough to have 8 or however many children. We should respect our natural reproductive rhythms and welcome our children to freely push out of the womb, no bizarre or unnatural birth control needed.
      But it is *OUR* Bible that commands us to multiply, so why aren't Christians and Jews having as many children as the Muslims? They are not not having too many children, but rather we are having too few.

    • @yosefmacgruber1920

      You have 3 children? Why so many? Lots of people have 3 children, and that also adds to the growing population size. But because every human life is of immense value and sacred, and I am a pro-lifer, I am fine with the population size naturally growing. But with 3 children, couldn't you have an "unexpected" child or two, and then I am having to defend you having had 4 or 5 children, as families come in all sizes, and like so many people out there, I am pro-life and I do not expect for people to somehow "control" their family size. Many people are fertile and their families can become big easily sometimes. And I very much understand and agree with people's objections to birth control. Many large families do a great job at making sure that they give their many children good attention. And their siblings help as well.
      I live in my own country, but why should that matter? Relevance? Would or should my pro-life arguments change if I was a migrant or immigrant?
      I watched the video a long time ago, and I do not agree with the actress at all, whining pathetically about how the world population was just 3 billion and has now naturally pushed up to 7.8 billion. Well a pregnancy swells the belly also. To be expected. Sure, the world population is becoming "really big", but so what? Wouldn't that hugely benefit humans? And wasn't it our proper destiny to become someday huge in our population size?

    • @yosefmacgruber1920
      @yosefmacgruber1920 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not at all. It is good to have 4 or 5 or even more children, because more and more people would be glad to live. What is wrong with parents so much loving their children, that they naturally tend to have large families? And what of the huge numbers of people who have objections to birth control? As a pro-lifer, I very much agree with most objections to birth control, thus I have no expectation that responsibly married couples should somehow control their fertility. I am quite fine with people giving birth to baby after baby after baby, well because God commanded and designed that we should multiply. We humans get no break at all like the animals that have a very limited "breeding season". Humans remain "in heat" year-round, thus do we need any more signs that humans in general should have large families?

    For me there are two main points that stop anyone from being able to tell me "Overpopulation is not real": 1. Earth is a finite amount of land, which isn't increasing and won't be increasing. Only way around it sooner or later will be for everyone to start living in skyscrapers. 2. Our demand for food has drastically outran the natural ecosystem around us. Every other animal (except captivity animals) survive based on a natural ecosystem: they do not consume at a faster rate than the ecosystem can produce. We started breeding animals not because of the ease of not having to hunt, but because there wouldn't be enough animals out there to feed us naturally at the rate with which we demand it. That to me doesn't make us smarter for figuring out a solution, it makes us unable to coexist with natural resources, which will ultimately bring extinction.

      To point number 1:
      - Standing shoulder-to-shoulder, the entire world's population could fit within the 1,300 square kilometers of Los Angeles.
      - We could fit the entire worlds population of 7.75 billion people on the state of Alaska giving every single person around 220 square meters to live on. That would be enough for a small house and a backyard.
      To think that we could ever reach a point where there is not enough space for more humans to live on the planet is wrong.
      To point number 2:
      Our demand for food has not outran the natural ecosystem around us. That is just wrong. I would like to see some evidence for the claims that you are making.
      We did not start to breed animals because there are not enough animals out there to feed us naturally. That is untrue as well. Did you know that we eat less meat today than we did 60 years ago? Do you have an idea of how much food we waste nowadays? Do you have an idea of how many tons of meat are thrown away every day?
      We started to breed animals because of other reasons. One of them being that in the beginning of the industrialization there was a high demand for factory workers. Therefore, instead of becoming a farmer (which was a common job at that time) a lot of people began to work in factories and we started to have a lack of farmers. That’s when the big companies developed and it’s almost impossible to make a living now as a farmer because of those big companies.
      Another reason is that as we developed and became more educated, people decided to choose other careers. Becoming a farmer just isn’t as popular anymore.
      Another reason is that people used to have their own animals back in the day. That’s just not the case anymore.

An unrelenting obsession for endless growth, indifferent to the constraints that material reality imposes upon the "flights of fancy" those same psychopathic megalomaniacs beat over our heads, trying to make us conform and fall in line along our fellow slaves: reproduce (consumers/workers), BUY, reproduce, BUY! These are the results of a planned, deliberate, artificially-produced dysfunctional anti-society.

    I am glad we are finally addressing this "taboo" issue, but the idea that the speaker believes the problem can be solved primarily via a population reduction in the First World is quite puzzling.
    Population growth in the majority of advanced, educated countries has been declining or levelling out in the last 70 years. The biggest problem is the Third World and the solution is likely access to knowledge, schooling and contraception. The situation will sadly get worse before it gets better.

      The issue must be global. The point is about resources that sustain humans on Earth.
      One USA kid uses 270 gallons of water a day, an African kid uses 5 gallons a day, this means that though USA population growth might be slower than Kenyans, the very ones produced in USA are still too many. On carbon footprint, USA person emits 9 times more carbon than African..... This could imply that maybe s country like USA might need to bring down it's population down to less than 100 million.... And Africa needs no more than a billion people too to have sustainable continent.... India grew from 80 million people to billion plus in under 100 years 😭😭😭😭....
      My point is not about who's supposed to slow down child birth. That is the problem when someone thinks they're not the problem,,,, but instead everyone on Earth must focus on population reduction.... We need to drive back the population down to at least 2 billion people and never increase it beyond that.
      My opinion.
      I'm African. I'm 34 and no kids, I don't plan on having any kid

      Don't try to lay the blame for people jumping into bed on the "system." This is one problem that comes from the loins, not from the economic system. Of course churches and governments and industries will take advantage of that growth idiocy, but they are not to blame. It starts with the individuals... who just can't stop pumping out babies like a river. So the Club of Rome's predictions will stay on course. The beginning of the end has already begun and is clear to see. By the mid twenties it will be (according to the models) pretty clear where this is taking us. There may even become a time when nuclear war is the best strategy for survival. Sounds nuts, but no more nuts than denying the population growth is driving us to our collective doom and on the way will deny all that brood from appreciating the way life could have been if their parents had any sense.

      China and India both are not raising their populations. China has a birthrate of 1.70, meaning more people are dying than being born. India has a rate of 2.20, which means the children born are enough to replace their parents and nothing more, ie their populations are stable.
      The United States are literally in a population crisis right now because not enough people are having babies.
      The outright fact is that overpopulation was thought of during the baby boom of the 1900s when everyone thought people would just keep having babies until poor people overwhelmed the rich (that was a genuine fear). That never happened.
      As it turns out, population growth naturally declines until it evens out due to advances in medicine and first world practices. Every single first world country has met this mark.
      The only way you could continue to believe in overpopulation is by listening to outdated, incorrect data and are blatantly ignoring the facts or refusing to do any research for yourself.

    Thank you. Excellent job. Overpopulation has tugged at my spirit for decades. Yes, it's the topic that few are ready to embrace. This may be changing, but I'm not sure. Overpopulation is connected to the larger and deeper issue of consciousness. When food and water become scarce for the masses throughout the world (including the so-called first world), this will be the wake-up call for a shift in consciousness for the vulgus. An appropriate consciousness takes into account the needs of all Creation. We share this planet with plants, animals, and the rest of Nature. The Creation - plants, animals, and Nature as a whole - is groaning under the weight of human abuse and misuse of the environment. While the many debate issues of race, class, religion, and politics, a more critical issue surrounds us. WE ARE THE ISSUE and main problem for this planet. The question is, WILL WE BE THE ANSWER? Again, thank you . Your talk is a brave and timely offering.

    Nothing puts as big a strain on the environment as much as the increase in population. The more people you have, the more trees you have to cut down, the more roads, houses, cars and everything else you need. This means more traffic, and more fossil fuels being burned. It's nice to say that we should educate people about it, and hopefully they'll keep their families small, but it's such a drop in the bucket with the world's population increasing by a billion people every 12 years or so. Immigration rates into the US have been at historic high rates for decades now. We, here in the US., are behaving as if we need more people, not less. Where are the environmentalists on this issue? It's taboo for them, that's for sure. We seem to think we can do whatever with this earth, but Mother Nature will have her way in the end. The wildfires get worse out west every year, and the flooding in the east gets worse every year, too. As Spirit said, it's Nature's Way of telling us something's wrong!

Having babies is not one of them. More men should get vasectomys.

      I care, however, I believe that every human life is of immense value and sacred, and so we ought to naturally increase. We need a human-denser world, because there is just so many of us humans now, and most people see little means or no need to somehow "control" the growth of human numbers. In fact, human population growth is still commonly a "given", not something that is expected to be controllable.

    Western nations aren't overpopulated. Africa, India, the ME, Latin America, China, and Indonesia are overpopulated. If population control is not established in those areas it wont make a difference. The common argument against overpopulation is that nations would face a shortage of youth laborers but fact is that the current social-economic model of infinite growth is impossible to sustain. Eventually nations will have to deal with the fact that there are more old than young. It's inevitable.

    I took an introduction to environmental science in the early '70's and the take away for me was that even with the emphasis on air pollution, water pollution and loss of biodiversity, the underlying problem was TOO MANY HUMANS on the planet. The planet probably can't sustain more than about one billion humans while supporting most of the rest of the other species we depend on for our survival. The mass extinction of the Anthropocene started about the time human population reached one billion. I just hope the human species can survive this population bottle neck before our numbers begin to drop to a sustainable level. By the way, I decided on the no children option myself as a favor to the planet.

    Let's be honest, the West isn't causing overpopulation. Westerns should have more children, up to the replacement rate of 2.1 at least, Africa needs to control their growth. We're talking about 7 per woman in sub-Saharan Africa. Their generations are also shorter, thus their population grows even faster.
    If you actually care about overpopulation, help Africans curb their birthrate.

    • @AloofObserver
      @AloofObserver 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      dyodoublej I agree that we use too many resources but we aren't causing overpopulation. Instead of telling Westerners that we need to stop having babies she should be telling how to address our rampant materialism and wastefulness. That would have a much larger impact.

    • @yosefmacgruber1920
      @yosefmacgruber1920 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is wrong with African generations being shorter? By most every reasonable standard, adulthood really comes at age 13 still, and not the arbitrary Western age of 18. Human beings come "in heat" at about age 13 or so, and not age 20 or 30 or 40. So it makes sense that people should pair up and get married younger, if they are ready or able to.
      And a higher birthrate allows more people to live. Huge numbers of people have practical, cultural, philosophical, and religious objections to birth control. As a pro-lifer, I know that I do. So why should I have any objection to loving parents having more than 7 children in a family, if they are able to? We should more respect our bodies' reproductive rhythms, and stop fighting its attempts to get pregnant. Why not, as people in less Western-corrupt cultures often do, just let babies freely pump out of their bodies? Human reproduction is a vital life process.

    A long time ago, I read "The World Inside" by Robert Silverberg, a "sci-fi" short novel that posits a possible mode of existence when humanity gets to the point where there's only enough space if everyone lives in city-sized skyscrapers while genetically modified tasteless food is mass-produced in mysterious areas the vast majority of humans will never see. It's a dystopian future in the guise of utopia, where the "quiverfulls" have succeeded and continue to succeed in their mission to breed at an astronomical rate. I highly recommend it to everyone, whether or not you think overpopulation is a "myth," and try to consider what life would be like if that was how we ended up. And that's assuming we DO find a way to produce enough food for so many humans.

      @@georgesteffey8375 Science shows that population growth is already reversing, primarily due to urbanisation. Bangladesh, which she used as an example, already has a birth rate of 2.04 children per female. A birth rate of 2.1 is required to replace the current population, so already Bangladesh is effectively reversed in its ability to grow. (It's a little more complex than that, as there is increased longevity as well, so there will be a 20-year lag before the actual population statistics decline.) So, contrary to what she is saying, Bangladesh is starting to struggle to replace it's current population.
      Most of the West, and many developing countries, have already moved past this pointsome 20 - 30 years ago.. For example, China (1.69), USA (1.78), South Korea (0.98), Italy (1.29), Brazil (1.73), Europe (1.53), Japan (1.40), and many more. In fact, apart from Africa, Indonesia and parts of the Middle East and Central Asia, the world has moved into a post-growth phase.
      And that has significant implications. Because all of the systems of governance, capitalism, communism, fascism, etc, are predicated on continuous growth. And that growth has been possible because the population has been growing. Until now.
      So the major problem of the future is how we manage population decline, not population growth.
