  • For 39 years, Cawood Ledford (April 24, 1926 - September 5, 2001) was a radio play-by-play announcer for the University of Kentucky basketball team. Ledford's style and professionalism endeared himself to many sports fans in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and he remains among the most popular sports figures in the state.
His last game as an announcer was in 1992, when Kentucky fell to Duke 104-103 in overtime in the NCAA East Regional Final, widely considered to be the greatest college basketball game ever played. In a gesture of appreciation, Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski walked to the broadcast area immediately after the game's conclusion and congratulated Ledford on his career.

I played College Basketball, I refereed College Basketball, and I have watched every college game I could get my hands on. This without a doubt is the most ELECTRIFYING moment in the history of the game. And the class of Mr. Ledford in calling that last play (with everyone listening, knowing that he was a career Kentucky guy) is the most remarkable sports commentary I have every witnessed ...

And " That is Why They're #1 " .... the classic call of Mr. Ledford still rings thru my head. And to think, 32 years later, we're on the doorstep of more College Basketball History ... can't wait !!

Some of my favorite memories with my dad are listening to Cawood call the games on the radio while we watched them on TV.

Hearing Cawoods voice in this video brought back some memories! I was 10 yrs old at this time.
Also, Coach K’s words seemed so sincere. Don’t know much about him but I have a newfound respect for him.

Also, the way Coach K got on the radio and consoled the Big Blue Nation immediately after the game is still the classiest thing I've seen in sports.

I’d only “heard of” Kryzyzewski coming on during the post game, but had never heard the audio. Great moment.
Also, this is the first time I’ve heard Ledford’s fine work.
Man he was smooth, and he was a pro. Cut from the same cloth as Vin Scully.
