    • @klx6265
      @klx6265 9 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Eros Exactly. Kubrick considered it his best work, and if you look at the incredibly subtle level of detail, it truly is his best film ever. Now, I love 2001 and would put it on the top of every list ever, but Eyes Wide Shut easily deserves to be in the top five, if not number 2.
      Many people discredit it because of direct sexual themes. Now sexuality is a powerful emotion. It takes a really objective mind to see through the distortion sexuality produces, and with the amount of sexuality that's present in Eyes Wide Shut, it's no wonder people don't look beyond the external aspects of the movie.
      EWS is not a movie about love, sex, betrayal and fidelity at all. It is so incredibly complex and layered, it looks normal. But when you start to look closely, when you see the small hints, the shining star in the background, in-your-face MK Ultra references, you can't help but wonder the genius of this man.
      It's a largely misunderstood film and I wish it garnered more attention.
      Also, Watch Mojo is just *plain stupid*. They build lists based on word of mouth, and many a times, just randomly.
      Please, *Watch Mojo*. Get your game right.

      I heard that Kubrick lived in Harpenden, So I thought I'd go and look at his house maybe be I thought from the road, a house just like anyone elses ... ! Urmm It had a gate house 1/2 a mile from the house after that there was an estate of staff houses on the estate, you can't go further and the next part was super walled, secured, and gated perimeter with the mansion so far, it's out of sight. See it you can't get near it. but hey, I did feel for a second. I might have been looking at a tree Kubrick had once looked at.

    Eyes Wide Shut is so underrated, probably because like every Kubrick movie, it will get more appreciated with age and it is of course, his last film. My top five is as follows:
    #1- 2001: A Space Odyssey
    #2- The Shining
    #3- A Clockwork Orange
    #4- Eyes Wide Shut
    #5- Full Metal Jacket
    Honourable mentions to Dr. Strangelove & Paths of Glory, but they just don't have that visual beauty that I need in Kubrick films.

    • @GeoffreyPicketts
      @GeoffreyPicketts 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Ryan Teney Paths of Glory doesn't have visual beauty? i think you need to rewatch the film. look at the composition of each scene, the patterns, the leading lines, the points of view. And if you truly appreciate his visual beauty Barry Lyndon should top your list.

    • @ryanteney5800
      @ryanteney5800 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** Paths definitely is a beautiful film, but I suppose I was referring to the "Kubrick" beauty that he refined in his films as his career blossomed. And as for Barry Lyndon, touche my friend, I acknowledge it as an ascetic masterpiece but I just do not appreciate films from that period, and can't put a movie on my top 5 that I honestly don't enjoy.

    2001 really is one of the best science fiction films ever made. Co-created by one of the best filmmakers of all time and one of the best SF authors of all time, its a masterpiece IMO.
    Re-making 2001 (as has been rumored) without Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C Clarke would be like re-painting the Mona Lisa without Leonardo Da Vinci.
    Full Metal Jacket is also an amazing film (the fact that R Lee Ermey had actually been a USMC drill instructor and brought his experiences to the film role helped with that I suspect)

      +Kyle Simmons It is a Stanley Kubrick production. He didn't direct the film but he handed over the project to Steven Spielberg well before his death (about 7 years prior). And at the very end of the film, Spielberg added an additional credit that reads - "For Stanley Kubrick". It was quite touching.

      Nameless Paladin I love A.I. on so many levels. It's a great story, great visuals and great performances. Some Kubrick alumni (Jan Harlan, etc.) were used or consulted for the film which gave it the flavor of a Kubrick film in some of the camera angles. It's time to dig the film out of my collection and watch it again. =)

      Steven Spielberg did a good job of capturing Kubrick's style. You can tell he was determined to honour his old friend and the ending was actually much darker than a lot of people give it credit for. One day. After that, Monica's dead and David will probably deactivate himself AKA commit suicide. I wish Kubrick was still alive. I learned about him through Nostalgia Critic and he makes most of the new generations directors, barring prodigies like Christopher Nolan, look like first year film students.

    I find it funny so many people don't like 2001: A Space Odyssey because of it's slow pace. In the times when it feels slow, you think harder and therefore see deeper. Watch the film again when you gain more brain cells please and then you will see why it's number 1.

  • @MrDrawingboard1

    Kubrick films tend to grow on you, you don't like them the first time, but if you watch it again you'll eventually love it.
    My top 5 Stanley Kubrick films are (in no particular order)
    1.) Dr Strangelove: or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
    2.) Full Metal Jacket
    3.) The Shining
    4.) 2001: A Space Odyssey
    5.) A Clockwork Orange
    I've seen others, Paths of Glory, Barry Lyndon, Spartacus, Eyes Wide Shut etc. and those are beautiful, amazing films, but these are my personal top 5.

    • @WalkthroughHorde
      @WalkthroughHorde 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrDrawingboard1 I think Lolita would be an easy 6th for yours, but personally I'd have (disregarding the "no particular order"):
      1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
      2. A Clockwork Orange
      3. The Shining
      4. Lolita
      5. Dr. Strangelove
      6. Full Metal Jacket
      7. Paths of Glory
      And the rest just kind of fill in in no particular order; they are great, but those 7 are my favorites in order.

    • @MrDrawingboard1
      @MrDrawingboard1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, even Strangelove I didn't love the first time around. I had to see that film about 3 or 4 times to like it.

      I know Spielberg is on the same page as me, but I'm not taking any line from him or anything. When he give examples, I often hear him talking about The Shining.

      It's just I agree with Spielberg, Kubrick films don't hit me the first time around. They don't seem to hit with many audiences the first time around either.
