Making Simple Craft Foam Wings

- Recorded my progress on how I made my craft foam wings. Pretty simple since it was my first try, but they came out better than I expected! They held up well at the event I made them for (through lots of wind and walking through large crowds).
Materials:
- Craft Foam (bought at Micheal's)
- Hot Glue/Hot Glue Gun
- Ribbon
- Clear Tape
- Wire
- Scissors
- Pencil

trying to find a template like your wings but can't find them...
april garcia I looked up photo references of eagle wings and made my own template based off that. I drew it onto the foam a few times until I thought it looked right and then cut it out. Once I had one wing done, I traced that one for the other pieces.

alex h. Hi! Thanks for checking out my video! I don’t have a template to share since I drew directly onto the material and made the wings. But before I did I googled eagle wing references and then practiced drawing on plain paper. Hope that helps & happy crafting! 😃

What kind of wire did you use? Where did you buy it?
Craft wire that I purchased at my local Michael’s craft store. I don’t recall the size, but it was on the thicker side.

What materials are used?
All items used can be purchased at your local craftstore, possibly even Walmart (I got my supplies at Michael’s). I used 2mm craft foam for the wings, black ribbon, hot glue, and bendable craft wire (I don’t remember which brand).
What is the size of the Craft Foam? 12x18? Looking to make these for a cosplay meetup in December and I really love how simple and affordable this tutorial is!
Thank you! Honestly I don’t remember since it was so long ago, but after checking Michaels website it must be the 12x18 since it’s the largest they offer! It was just the basic craft foam and not the EVA/specific cosplay stuff they carry now. Though I’m sure those would work too!

Shirshu Kun I don’t see why not! 😊 The wings would just be less flexible. And make sure the wire you use would be strong enough to hold the cardboard in place.

I don’t have a template unfortunately! I drew the design directly onto the craft foam. I used a pencil and erased a few times till I got the look I wanted.

What gauge wire did you use?
Mie Shayla Castro I honestly don’t remember. This video was done so last minute I didn’t think to document the exact specifications of all the supplies I used. Sorry I can’t be of much help on that part :(

Dita Aypra For this project I just used the basic craft foam sheets at michael’s, which are 2mm. This tutorial should also work for thicker foam (like 3mm or possibly 5mm) if you wanted to make some wings that are sturdier.

Demonix Bomb Lilith I haven’t used cardboard for wings before, but I have used it in other projects and essentially did the same thing. I cut out my design and then used wire to make them more sturdy. They won’t be flexible though so you’ll have to take that into account if you’re walking in a crowded area. And since it’s heavier than foam you’ll need a wire to match it as well. Good luck with your costume!!
