Around here (Massachusetts North Shore) what you called zeppoli we called fried dough. We also flatten them out to about 1/2 inch thick so that bubbles would form in the dough as you fried them. Our zeppoli were made from cream puff dough.

Its different wheb u get a regular square grandma pie, it doesnt flop like that and its cooked well enough that you dont have to request well done. Give it another try with regular size square pie (well, rectangular technically)
