They just need a side dressing of compost after flowering, deadheading and an occasional cool morning watering during the nagging dry days of late summer and the leaves won't yellow and the plant won't stress. An unstressed plant and no yellow leaves means the helpful slugs won't come around to clean up. I just love that Acanthus! Cheers.

Great info! I live in Northern California and was just able to ID this. Have it growing in my front yard.

Thx for the info. Heat wave here in Los Angeles area has wiped mine out. I now know that's just the way it goes.

Nice video. Just wish you had told where you live and what exposure the plants have (north, south, etc.). I've had one in the shade for a few years, and it has only put out three little leaves. I will be oving it to an area with more light.

Sorry about that, usually do. I am in Northern California, inland, gets in low 20sF in winter, 90-100 summer. These don't like our summer, really suffer past 80s. They like shade, these are on the north side of a house so they dont' get afternoon sun, and would burn if they did where we are. If coastal they could handle more sun.

can these be placed in a shaded area even though its summer? just got these to go up against my south fence thats shaded by large trumpet trees and maples . gonna give this a shot in central florida here.

Keep them out of direct sunlight and you'll be fine is my best guess. Mine are potted in an outdoor atrium (Southern California) that is half direct sun and half shade during summer. I keep these in the shade and they've done well.

Its pretty drought tolerant, these plants are too much in the sun it tolerates dry conditions in shady spots.
