I still remember getting excited about the California Zephyr being temporarily rerouted through Wyoming when I first read about it in Trains Magazine or elsewhere around age 11, mistakenly thinking that meant it would also make stops in Cheyenne, Laramie, etc. (clearly knowing nothing regarding the minutiae of, e.g., ADA platform height regulations for Amtrak). When I got my family interested in taking the train from Denver to Laramie, and we called to book tickets, I was quickly disabused of that idea.

Wow. 145 in Phase V until being repainted as a Heritage Unit in 2011 in Phase IIIB paint.

Interesting! The detour you caught over Sherman Hill (With the 4 private cars) is actually on a DVD that is called "Fall Colors Express". All footage was shot from the train from the varnish on the rear. It is a rather nice movie to watch!

The train could not endure the 2007-'09 recession. Its last season was in 2007. My guess is any cars that could be auctioned off were and the others placed somewhere in storage. I know that sleeping car "Berlin" was sold to a private owner.
