When I was studying economics in college (it was my major) Robert Reich was Sec. of Labor, before leaving to take up his post at Cal. (UC Berkeley). To me, even in grad school, he was a "rock star" among economists. His lectures are so concise and "watchable", that they should be req'd viewing/reading for anyone wanting to know what's going on in our nation and our government.
I really regret that during the Reagan Administration, I was working on Wall St as a banker (one of the "honest ones"), yet could see that the winds of change were ramping up in speed and strength. The absence of any attention paid to the huge monopolies being formed, the breaking of unions (the Patco-air traffic controllers union was one of the first) put the nation's flight routes in danger from over-worked and tired people in the towers. And that was only the beginning. So when are the powers-that-be going to start enforcing the anti-trust laws??? Those monopolies (in a nation that idolizes "rugged individualism", no less) are harmful to the middle-class, which, as Dr. Reich reminds us, is at the core of our democratic society. What happened???

The best path to that is an amendment, and since Congress is highly unlikely to get the 2/3 needed to propose an amendment to deal with Citizens United vs FEC then we have the limited Convention, and most organizations fighting money in politics agree it's a good idea to use the Article V limited Convention, Common Cause does not, they've been misinformed about the realities of using a limited convention. Reich left out a key piece of the economy: energy-economics. Almost no economists cover this aspect, and yet it is absolutely vital for climate mitigation and improving the quality of life.
It will happen, and is in individual homes all over the place. We must push for it though. Tesla’s dreams will come true, and we’ll have a pollution free power grid.
But it doesn't really conflict with the solution in this video so no reason to add it in and make it needlessly complex

I am really glad I found your channel, for a long while I have felt completely hopeless about being able to do anything to help fix issues that are affecting the world. I felt extremely depressed and stressed about political issues that I felt I couldn't do anything to fix but stand and watch.

Capitalism is based on freedom ? Capitalism is based on on money and failure
Wealth is fueled by debt, and debt grows faster than the economy. When I have asked a few simple questions
of the investor types, not a single one will answer my questions. This leads me to believe that A) they never
even looked at how capital gains are generated, or B) these investor types are perfectly willing to siphon off
the wealth of the bottom 90% or get bailed out by the U.S. Treasury in order to get capital gains.
Either way, capitalism is not the great freedom giver and poverty annihilator that the propaganda makes it out to be.
Here is how I addressed my unanswered questions to investor types:
For those of you who are commenting one way or another on the merits of investing, I would like to ask
a question or two. When the sum total of financial assets ( "investments" ) in the USA top $90 trillion
and the economy as measured by GDP is around $21.5 trillion, how do "investments" make 6 to 7 percent
while the GDP only grows by 2.56% annually? With wealth being larger and growing faster than the
economy, how does the economy pay off the dividends wealth earns?

Monied, influence pedaled, and revolving door lobbying, on the other hand, is the problem. If political leaders give much more credence to those who walk in their door with thousands or millions in checks, that is legalized corruption.

GDP measures the "retail value" of what's produced (and sold) in the US economy in a given year, roughly speaking.
Profits usually result from creating a good that greatly benefits people, like the iPhone, valued for instantly connecting people anywhere. Profits don't appear effortlessly. iPhones are expensive, but are produced using the cheapest available parts and labor, from around the world. Some products are not yet profitable.
Dividends/Profits - Not all companies pay dividends. Not all companies are profitable. Tesla isn't actually profitable, and doesn't pay dividends, but lots of investors see a bright future for Tesla and bid it's stock up to a high valuation. They may be disappointed in the future, as competition intensifies in the electric car market.
Financial assets: Stocks are valued by their future expected cash flow, profits, or dividends, discounted to the present. Stocks like Tesla are valued by what-ever investors expect it's stock to be worth in the future, discounted to the present. Bonds are similarly valued by their bright (or dismal) future, i.e., expected future interest payments, discounted to the present.
Conclusion: Wealth is based on a judgement call of the present value of future expectations. Population growth, political stability, scientific break-throughs, the discount rate, etc., are some of the many factors in the valuation of the present value of a stock or bond.
This is brilliant! More people, especially conservatives, needs to watch this. I wouldn't mind having this guy as my prime minister (I live in the UK).

@@thedadyouneverhadchannel3544: All "republic" means is that power is vested in its citizens instead of a monarch; which is the case for the U.S. So, yes, we are a Republic, but that's not all.
Do people vote in this country? Yes, they do. Hence we are a democracy, too. People vote for representatives; they vote on referendums; etc. Democracy is a very broad term that covers many forms of civic participation: voting, redressing grievances, etc. Too many people that pull out the "republic" comment are focusing on Direct Democracy, which we aren't (well, most of the time; referendums, initiatives, and recall elections are forms of Direct Democracy). For the most part we are a Representative Democracy where we elect people to carry out public policies.
So, we are both a Democracy (broadly speaking or a Representative Democracy more specifically) and a Republic.

I've missed you so much! Thank you for making this video Robert. You're information has helped me explain us economics to my fellow (Union) road commission coworkers! Please keep making videos if nothing else to help me teach the history or unions and economics.
Hollady Drones Having done the Union thing, and being fully up to speed with the accidents and disasters that presaged the US Union movement. It is sad to see, but many off those trade unions have been more and more supportive of Republithugs in southern states and elsewhere but the last couple of decades have been about personal power- several of my trades unionists are sitting in the Texas Lege, voting with the RepubliCons who run the joint. Proff. Reich is also telling us that we need to make some deep decisions, we must walk arm in arm, to achieve this; I'm 67 years old, born in the south, raised in the south- I somehow miised the curse of racism, but am marred by it's existence every day- we all are- but it is coming closer to the Knight Riders of the '50s & '60s with each passing week. We have to quit buying into the divisive poison too many pols on both sides are spreading. Good Care, Good Luck and Vote!
I would remind you that most Americans are opposed to mandatory union memberships. This was another stand on which Trump based his Presidency, the right of the worker not to have his pay taken to support an organization he may not want to belong to or associate with, and another reason why he won.
@@purplenights1 I don't disagree with your statement re mandatory dues: that said, modern work rules. ie the 40 hour work week, overtime pay, disabling employers mandatory overtime- all these things and many more are "fallout" from unions. The sad state the union movement has become is why they have lost the faith of American workers- but they, like every complicated, large, old bureaucracy have become distant to their original stated goals, and corrupt would be an apt word to describe many present day officials today. The unions had a huge place in the growing of the middle class virtually all economists claim as the real power base of the American economy- I find it sad that they are so broken - I don't find their state one I any longer care to be apart of, though I and many of my relatives have been union members.

Robert, your "cocktail napkin" approach to complex issues is very enabling. This particular video should be required viewing in every high school. Students shouldn't have to wait until they get into Berkeley to hear your wisdom.
I learned everything Professor Reich said in this video, and most from his other videos, while studying political science at the university. And all that knowledge, along with many other things I learned along the way, is why I went in to college a die hard libertarian and emerged as a staunch progressive. Education provides more insight into the issues; makes you confront your biases; takes you out of your echo chamber and pops your isolated intellectual bubble.
I was stubborn for the first couple of years, but class after class kept shooting holes in the arguments and policies I once championed until I could no longer defend or support them.
It's frustrating knowing this stuff while knowing that most people have no clue about it and are often very stubborn and set in their thinking, while being reinforced in their echo chambers most of the time, and thus refuse to learn something new and challenge their views. It comes as a relief to see things like Prof. Reich's videos that make it easy for laypeople to understand.
And btw, no, college wasn't an indoctrination camp of leftists making you see their point of view. We were presented with both (or many) sides of every issue, as well as their pros and cons from critics and supporters. And I didn't get low marks on papers and assignments when I still held my libertarian mindset. As long as you can make a solid argument in a well written paper, you get good grades; regardless of your viewpoint.
I saw the merits of the Libertarian philosophy on certain concepts such as individual liberties and the like but the philosophy fell to pieces when it came to political policy and economics.
@@theQuestion626: Even a lot of the individual liberty aspects fall apart under scrutiny. Libertarianism is all about negative rights and liberties. They don't give much credence to positive rights and liberties because most believe that those require coercion to achieve. But it's awfully hard to live a "free" and fulfilling life when the deck is stacked against you (economically, socially, politically) as is the case for most minorities and the working poor in this country. It's also hard to pursue a free and happy life when you can't obtain good and affordable health care to make you a healthy and productive citizen; or if education and training is often exclusionary for a large portion of the population, thus not allowing you to be competitive in the labor market; or if child care is so expensive you either can't afford it and thus can't work to better your situation, or you do pay for it but now are nearly broke and must forego other necessities in life like nutritious food or decent housing and clothing; and many other examples of the fallacy of individual liberty under the libertarian rubric.
Life, society, economics and government are too simplistic and fantastical in the libertarian philosophy. It doesn't hold water in the real and complicated world we live in, plus I think it denies or ignores major aspects of the human condition (greed, selfishness, a lust for power, complacency, personality types, etc.) and life in general (i.e. that bad shit happens in life, even to good and industrious people).

I would like to see top economists get together and analyze proposed efforts such as the Green New Deal and Medicare for All regarding cost facts and benefits.
How about starting with people like Joseph Stiglitz, Jeffrey Sachs, Mark Blyth, Richard Wolff, James Galbraith, Stephanie Kelton and others. Can you get them to do something together?
Yes: I’m tired of political leaders, journalists, bankers, Wall Street speakers, and even us everyday folks speculating to ourselves about economics: we need panels of economists getting asked tough questions from small & medium business leaders, small & medium city managers (or maybe a few politicians), and everyday people.

This reminds me of Ross Perot’s infomercial from his 1992 presidential run: respectful, informative on how we got there, with data & graphs, and straight to the point on how we move to reform going forward.
I think this one, though, beats out any other I’ve seen from Sec. Reisch and Perot. I wish news reporters and politicians would all be forced to bring data & charts and numbered, written plan points to back themselves up.

That is a concern for me too, but I don't think it is a huge problem. I don't think that the vast majority of people would be willing to spend their whole lives at the edge of poverty to avoid work. Some would, of course, but it will be very few I think. I have some experience in this from several years working with community action agencies - usually with people on welfare. Most of them want a lot better and are willing to work for it but don't know how to get there, or far more often lack the resources to do so. Some have just given up and resigned themselves to poverty, and a VERY few, actually think society owes them a living no matter what. But there has never been a program that has not been scammed to some extent - it might as well be a law of nature. Unless you choose a society that does nothing to help anyone ever rich or poor (because the rich freeload probably more than the poor) because SOME will find a way to abuse that, then we might as well abandon civilization.

Thanks. TO me the best part of UBI (especially if we have universal healthcare) is that basically all the diverse bureaucracies set up to handle diverse segments of the problem can go away. Unemployment? No need. Social security? Not needed. Student loans? Forget about it. CHIP? No need! WIC? all covered. Medicaid? Obsolete. Welfare? GOODBYE! Sorry, workman's comp - don't need you anymore. To be honest, I cannot name all the different programs we support targeting parts of the problem, but I would bet it is hundreds at least between the feds and the states - ALL irrelevant with UBI and universal healthcare - I think we would save a bundle, get better results, and eliminate any excuse to hate on the poor for getting assistance that others don't.
@@pdoylemi An important point about UBI that needs to be brought up is, "how much?" Do you guarantee just a meager existence, beans and rice and a cot in a dorm? Or do you guarantee at least a semi-fulfilling existence? I think you could sell the former more easily, but I'm not sure of the point of doing so.

No he shouldn't. Professor Reich has a greater impact teaching the American people. It is up to us to take this knowledge and use it to reshape the United States. Those who are qualified running for local, state and federal government. If we are not running, working to get the qualified elected. The President is only one piece of the puzzle. Conservatives understand this and have worked diligently on local and state governments. To right this ship it will take 20+ years of hard work and voting in every election. We cannot afford to continue to have a purity test every election just move the needle.

I agree with many points you make! I do think that there should be some distinction between those who are wealthy due to some stroke of luck/skill or being in the right place at the right time and the ones who are born into the wealth and have just assumed that everything they touch is golden. I think that the ones who faced adversity and lived through some existential struggle have a better/healthier perspective in knowing that what they have is not just the fruits of their own labor. I also question whether the hubris some people exhibit is a grand delusion of their own devising to cover up for the inadequacies they face in the mirror each day.
This is one of the reasons why societies have traditionally had large estate taxes to prevent large amounts of wealth for transferring between generations. If you don't tax inheritances then the wealth gets too concentrated and a type of rot sets into the society after a while. You end up with just a bunch of spoiled rich kids running everything.
I think you forgot globalization... For this to work it should be an international movement, at national level you are subject to other countries competitiveness...

Forming a union is sadly difficult; I worked for an alarm company for many years where you would be immediately fired for any attempt to form a union or even conversing with reps or members of existing unions. Thanks "right to work" laws!

#5 is such a huge point. If you allowed unions and unions demanded/negotiated better wages,... you wouldn't need to raise taxes on the rich, to give to the working poor! If you didn't had stronger Anti trust laws that didn't allow companies like FB and Amazon buy up all their competitors, then there would more 'winners'. And yes, the whole thing would be less efficient (less economies of scales) but by that thinking the most efficient system is a monopoly (or close to it) and we don't want that either... efficiency is good but the most efficient system is not the goal. We want the most good for the most people.

Great explanation. Now we need to get these people to explain to us why an increase in worker wages is not important as we a huge see rise of living costs and health costs. So many of them want to parrot the talking points of the wealth deserving to have more money but can't explain to me why everyone should not be making more money. They kind of get a dumb look on their faces, and their eyes glaze over. Regulation? Most of them can't even name a regulation that is keeping the middle class from making money, while I can name several that have been repealed that are encouraging vast exploitation.
If the 'little people' have a piece of the pie, which they've earned, the riches benefit too. I'm confused why the riches wouldn't want this scenario. If nobody can afford their products & services, how will they benefit? Seems like a no-brainer, but huh, who am I ??
The basic economic standard that more money circulating creates a more robust economy has been buried in 'trickle down" economics that has been embraced by the GOP to the degree that they do not even see the negative results of that failed theory. Their defense, even after the disaster in Kansas by Brownback is that not enough time was allowed to correct the downward spiral and show the positive results they say will happen, I for one am not willing to go through another economic depression like my grandfather lived through and we almost had in 2008 just to prove or disprove that theory.

Which is why it's so tragic that the right hates education so much.
teaching critical thinking skills needs to begin in K-12, not wait until college. Using "common sense" is basically employing critical thinking and logic, they both can be taught if begun at a younger age.

What is necessary is for us to develop discernment. I'm talking about the ability to sense what is true and what is not true, the ability to know when we're being deceived. We need to mature as a society. There are reliable ways to do this that have been around for thousands of years.

Look up David Graeber's writing on "bulls--- jobs" ... basically, the idea is that capitalism will create enough meaningless work to keep enough people (precariously) employed so that they defend the system rather than try to overthrow it.

On the one side of the argument, there simply isn't enough American IT graduates to fill all the open positions, and second, the cost of College education makes entering IT impossible for a lot of students. What's the Corporate solution - It's to bring in 100,000+ H1B's to fill open positions. Progressive Democrats such as Sen. Warren have a long term solution - Remove the barriers to college education by making it affordable for everyone and at the same time it will help rebuild the middle class.

The man is/was a university professor. He's made numerous documentaries. He has worked in the government at the federal level. He's a recognized, peer reviewed expert in his field. So, yeah, he knows how to formulate and express his ideas at a very high, cogent level of quality. He's not sitting in his basement or living room in with a crap web-cam and Walmart microphone, using Wikipedia for his only reference between shifts at the local mall.
Plus, he's consistently put his own money into his own productions. He doesn't need "George Soros".
And so what if he did/does accept outside funding? Would that negate the value of his thoughts, logic, or message?
The Right has absolutely no problem accepting dark money in exchange for influence. To be honest, "moderate" Democrats don't have a problem with it either. In today's world, one of the only ways to leap the hurdles of inequality is to have the resources to make the jump. Most of us don't have access to those just lying around. At the very least, he's advocating for a fair level of equality and a viable, stable environment for individual freedom and success.
Disagree with his ideas. Make a logical opposition to them with solid facts from verified, documented sources. Buzz word, conspiracy theory distraction is just amateur.
There's another problem this won't fix.
