    Larry, UGA games won't be the same without you. The crucial moments, big plays, and all of my memories of UGA football have your voice as the soundtrack.

    When my brother moved away from the South and before the advent of ESPN, he could not get UGA football on TV or radio. He would call me at game time and I would place the phone in front of the radio at my house and he would listen to Larry call the games. One of many football Saturdays he enjoyed thanks to Larry Munson!

    I remember when I would watch a UGA game on TV and would turn it down and turn up the radio to listen to Larry. He was a part of all of our lives for those of us who are UGA fans. RIP Larry and make sure you give a dog biscuit to all of those UGAs up there with you!! You'll be missed tremendously!!

    Larry Munson made me a Bulldog. I was not a Dawg fan when I started college at UGA in 1992. I didn't care about college ball. but I used to deliver pizza in my freshman year, and would listen to Georgia games out of boredom. His calls. his obvious passion. the way he painted each play with emotion and desperation made me care about the games. it made me care about every snap. He turned me from just being a student to a Dawg.

    I am a Diehard Gator, born and raised. I tell you, even with all of our rivalries in the SEC and the Southeast, we are all blessed for having heard Larry Munson. I lived in an area of Florida where I was able to tune in to Florida (Mick Hubert), Georgia (Larry Munson), Florida State (Gene Deckerhoff), Auburn (Jim Fyffe, Rod Bramlett), Alabama Eli Gold) and if the weather were clear even LSU (John Ferguson). Now, I live in Tennessee and I have developed a special admiration for Tennessee play by play for both the Vols and the Titans. Its amazing to me that there are generations of kids who will never experience what so many of us did who were able to listen to these men. We didnt have internet. We had to tune in on radio if we wanted to hear the games. I would be outside working or sitting listening to my truck radio. I had them all on preset. If Florida was home, I would tune in the best that I could on the way home from Gainesville. Where I lived in Florida I was right in the middle, right below Alabama and Georgia so I could get everyone. Some of the calls I remember Larry Munson make, especially the Auburn game on a last second throw to either Hines Ward or Andre Hastings. I still remember Georgia going into Auburn and Will Muschamp was playing his butt off. Sure, I hate Georgia because this is what Im supposed to do as a Gator, but when it comes to the great Larry Munson and the others, all of that so called hate goes out of the window. He along with a few others I mentioned belong to the ages now. When I moved away from home I wasn't able to listen in anymore. I truly miss these men. They are the ones who make the memories of these games so very special to so many, regardless of which university we attended or root for. Thank you for making this video. It brings back so many memories of great games. Go Gators.

    I'm a big UT fan, and even I admit that Munson was an amazing announcer and is a tribute to the great tradition of SEC football. Some of those calls, particularly the first one with Walker, make me shiver.

  • @andergriff
    @andergriff 17 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The quality of Munson's voice was particularly special. He had a resonant baritone that was pleasant to the ear, and moreover with his upper Midwestern accent, it was also crystal clear. Even with all the crowd noise behind him, you could hear every syllable he uttered. When he got excited, you got excited. When he described the scene, you "saw" it like you were there. And that is as much as you can ask of a radio sportscaster. God bless Larry Munson.

    He was one of the best. And I'm not even a Dawgs fan. For 40+ years he broadcast with passion the Georgia Dawg games. One of the best , his commentary ingrained in our minds. Who can forget "Run Lindsay Run" , "Hobnail Boot" , "My God a Touchdown" , "My God a Freshman"
    Enjoy retirement Larry. Truly one of the best.

    Sorry to see the waning of an era. Even as a kid in rual Georgia in the 80s, I remember listening to Munson on the radio. His voice was the most distinguishable that I've ever heard. I hate to see him not be able to travel anymore for the away games. He'll always live forever to me.

    I was a student at UGA 78-82, before these new fangled electronics. I used to have a transistor radio in my pocket under my Redcoat Band jacket with an earphone. When we sat in the stands, I would put the earphone in my ear to listen to Larry. Those were good times... listening to Larry call the Dawgs in Sanford Statium. HOW BOUT THEM DAWGS!

  • @rsclendenin
    @rsclendenin 17 ปีที่แล้ว

    I watched this with chill bumps and teary eyes recalling the many times I've sat 'tween the hedges watching the game live, but listening to Larry Munson on the radio. I've watched many Georgia games on TV with the TV volume off and the radio on to listen to Larry Munson call the game. And tonight for the first time in decades, we won't be able to listen to the Voice of the Dawgs call the game (Georgia VS Alabama).

    And I can’t even imagine how he would’ve reacted if he saw our Dawgs going to the National Championship.
    Rest In Peace Larry

We always would cut the sound down on the TV and get Munson on the radio. It just wasn't Georgia football without the 12th man. Larry Munson was one of the best. I miss the days where you heard the same legendary voice year in and year out for decades. You could count on that legendary voice as a constant throughout your child hood, through your teen years, and into your adulthood. There are still a few left, but they are a dying breed. That's to bad because they were as much a part of this nations sports fabric as the athletes themselves. Growing up in Los Angeles we were lucky. We had Vin Scully of the Dodgers, Chick Hearn of the Lakers, Bob Miller of the Los Angeles Kings…Thats almost a combined 150 years with one club. So their voices were synonymous with their franchises. Tom Kelly was also at USC for roughly 4 decades. 4 hall of fame voices you could count on throughout your life through every season.
