I ran into the same problem with the drill press I have. It’s one from Harbor Freight. I removed the plastic housing on the front of the machine that has the on/off switch. The case is actually split and there are ears that have large adjusting bolts. You can tighten them to take up the slack on the quill. Hope this helps someone. Not sure if other brands are made this way.

Thanks! Just picked up a 20 year old drill press which turns out to have a noticeable runout problem. Looking forward to following your method.

The only way to alter deflection with the set screw is to remove the quill because it has a square head that fits in the keyway. You can tighten it a half turn which will push it against the quill firmly and reduce L-R quill movement. Grinding the head round like a pin that is perfectly fit to the keyway is actually FAR better for offering an adjustable control for quill wobble while still being an anti-rotation key.

What is the name of the solvent you used to remove the corrison from the arbor of the drill press?

Bought a 20" Taiwanese drill press third hand. As with other used drill presses, dirt, loose fasteners, and rotted rubber were behind 95% of the problems. It would be nice to know how to clean, lube and adjust chucks, too, wouldn't it?

Yeah right, if you don't fix it a bolt won't fit in the holes.

I would have liked to see if there would be any total run-out with the press extended out fully.

I’ve been trying to fix mine for a while. Mine is not new. And it’s second hand. But it’s what I’ve got for now. It used to have a little wobble. Now it has a ton. I cannot figure out where it’s coming from.

Where did you get that stand (dial indicator) for the gauge?

That is NOT the correct way to set that adjusting screw, It has a flat spot and you need to remove the quill to adjust it..

Can you describe the correct way to remove the quill and make the adjustment or provide a link?

Just how precise does a round hole gotta be ? Your building a nuclear reactor right ?

Ahhh, am I missing something here? Started out with 9 thou runout, then cleaned it all up and ended up with 9 thou runout which you were happy with. Thus the runout procedure accomplished nothing?

      Yes, you're missing something.

Watch it again. He said run-out improved from 9.0 to 0.5 one-thousandths/inch.

I think what you really want to show is .009, nine thousandths and .005, five thousandths. What you’re showing is 9.0= 9 inches and .5 is a half an inch.
Edit: After rewatching the video, he said he had it to one half a thousandths witch is .0005.
