  • This is my implementation of a parking sensor I saw here:
    • How to make an Arduino...
    It's the same idea with the same basic parts, I've just made a few tweaks and made it a permanent fixture in my garage. The plastic parts were designed in fusion 360 and cut from 2.5mm acrylic on my K40 laser and superglued together.
    Link to the thingiverse page:

    These are the parts:

    LED ring: www.amazon.com...
    Nano: www.amazon.com...
    Ultrasonic Sensor: www.amazon.com...
    Lamp socket adapter: www.amazon.com...
    The low voltage electrical box and decora faceplates I had from a previous project.

    This is the nicest garage parking sensor project I’ve seen to date. Well done! 👍🏻

    I like it! But do you think the strip led would be a better visual?

    • @ReiniGrauer
      @ReiniGrauer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Any kind of led indicator would work. It could even just be a stoplight sort of thing with a green/yellow/red arrangement. I liked the way these ring leds looked so that's the route I took.
      Certainly there would be easier ways to fit a smaller indicator in the electrical box and faceplate.

      @@ReiniGrauer thanks for the reply Reini, I do like your 5v jumper from the light lol. We have the same issue, longer vehicle now in the garage🤔 I might just copy yours minus the fancy printed parts☹️ no 3d printer here. I will say you have knocked it out of the park with the adjustable sensor reset which I have not seen on any other video yet. That option just opens up a world of adjustment without having to reprogram the unit each time. We automator house with using nodeMCU and home assistant but I'm thinking this will be good as just a stand-alone device and I do have an Arduino Uno sitting around not doing anything so be a perfect project. Quick question how do you made any updates to your code then what's uploaded?

    OK i have it up and fired it up, but is there a limit to the number of leds that this can sync with, Im using a Strip led and testing went well with the 24 led count, but i bumped it to the 71 count and now nothing works. humm any sugestions?

    • @ReiniGrauer
      @ReiniGrauer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mind sharing the code? You just bumped the number of pixels up to 71 and it doesn't work?
      I had an issue where when the ring was at full brightness, the more pixels I used and the more colors I used, the power draw would cause weird stuff to happen to the little ultrasonic sensor and the whole thing would bug out. That's why I'm only using red/green/blue colors and have the brightness turned all the way down. I think the neopixel stuff is designed to run off a battery because of the high current draw, and you're supposed to wire it up with a capacitor or something, which I didn't do.
      You can try reducing the number of pixels and see if the behavior improves. Otherwise I think you might need to increase the size of the power supply driving it. I was using standard 5v-1A phone chargers to run it, and the voltage drop was enough with 24 pixels to cause problems unless the brightness was turned down to like 15%.

    Reini, love your implementation of the parking sensor. A few questions for you. Would you mind sharing the code you created for the button for learning the new distance? Also, have you had the chance to create enclosure designs for 3d printer. I wanted to replicate your design and see if you had any more information to go on with. Thank you for sharing this.

      I made something similar, I made a Chevy emblem enclosure and used actual LED. I’ve been using it for about 2 years now and it works perfect every time.

    How visible are the lights in the day time?

    • @ReiniGrauer
      @ReiniGrauer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are very bright. And since you are looking at the leds from straight on, it's still very bright, even with the brightness turned way down. To give you an idea, I've got the brightness setting at 10 of 255 on the FastLED API.
      My garage uses 6 70w LED stick lights so it's almost as bright as daylight in the garage with the lights on, so the LED ring is plenty bright as it sits.

    • @ManCrafting
      @ManCrafting 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's definitely bright enough. ;-)

    Hi I have downloaded your code for version 4 from thingiverse but I am new to this and you have a button in your design (#define BUTTON_PIN 5 #define BUTTON_SINK_PIN 6) so do I put one end of the button on pin 5 and the other end on pin 6 sorry if this sounds stupid but this is my first try at Arduino. Thanks

    • @ReiniGrauer
      @ReiniGrauer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Connect the button across it. It might be named incorrectly, it might actually be a source pin technically. Basically the button has to be pulled up for the pin on the arduino to detect voltage when it's pushed.

    Thanks for this video. I have it working like I want it and now just need to figure out how best to mount it in my garage. I have a friend with a 3D printer who can print for me. I see the .ai file in the Thingiverse link you provide, but neither I nor my friend are sure what program to open it in. What software should I use to open that? Thanks!

    • @ReiniGrauer

      That file is for a laser cutter. At some point I should probably design an enclosure for 3d printing and put it on thingiverse. I'll spend a little time on it when I get a chance.
