With speed the horse will naturally close in on the size of the pocket, by making it bigger at a slower gait you insure that in faster work it will be the right size

Why is he making his pockets so big through slow work? That doesn't make any sense to me.
Slower the work the bigger the pocket. Always give bigger pockets when doing slow work - faster the work smaller the pocket.
