  • What is a coronavirus, how many sorts are there and are they all dangerous? Why are there several tests to detect SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19? How do the tests work and which one is to be used when?
    If you have plenty of questions around COVID-19, if you want to find out what the difference between molecular and antibody testing is, watch this video for answers!

    How many times the virus has to duplicate in order for the swab test to come out positive?

    • @roche
      @roche  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Evelyn Crissi, thanks for reaching out! The analytical sensitivity of the Roche PCR Test was established both with the live SARS-COV-2 virus and with a synthetic construct. When testing for sensitivity of the test was able to detect as few as 25 copies/ml. This means that if a patient has 25 copies of a virus in only 1mL of sample the test is able to detect the presence of virus. Kind regards, Your Roche TH-cam team

      Thank you for this information. I read that the test that was available at the beginning of the outbreak will not detect the virus unless it copied at least 3000 times. So my common sense tells me if so, this is why they think that a person can be asymptomatic for about two weeks. But if a test can detect at 25 copies then how long we are looking at? How long it takes to the virus to copy itself 25 times? I assume it depends on the host, but is there an average result?
      Thank you for the education.

      Evelyn Crissi ...The PCR-Test can’t detect infection or confirm that there is a replicable viral load in the body !!!! It‘s only a nucleic-acid-Test...

      @@roche What stops the primers annealing to non-target RNA in a contaminated sample? The number of nucleotides in the primers are extremely small (just 20-30 bases long) compared with the lengths of non-target RNA lengths. The probability that primers will anneal to their composite RNA strands in genetic material, deactivated viral RNA fragments, (INFLUENZA A & B, broken/de-activated SARS-cov-2 RNA strands from previous infection) is very high.
      The specificity of SARS-CoV-2 primer protocols in the presence of contaminants within the unpurified snot sample is very small. Temperature cycle numbers are pushed > 40. Mass false-positives.
