    I would LOVE to see more of these weeks where directors call the film choice shots. I didn't like Drive too much the first time around years ago. Recently I saw one of Winding Refn's choices on MUBI, Brian de Palma's Body Double and I haven't stopped thinking about it. Last night I rewatched Drive, and suddenly it clicked for me. That glittering gaudy aesthetic, and a kind of voyeuristic sensibility with extreme violence, the hitchcockian wide shots that give that omniscient narrative... I could see clearly how de Palma had influenced, and it was exciting. Please MUBI, more of this sort of stuff, it's really interesting to find connections between an auteur and their inspiration!

      James Patterson that's a great suggestion. He would fit that perfectly, visually the gang colours would burst from the screen.

    NWR refers to the actors as 'friends'.
    For a guy with aspergers, that is understandable, but wrong. Gosling et al. are all moving ahead fine without any regard to the Danish director.

      what a bizarre statement. you don't know their personal lives. who's to say he doesn't grab lunch on occasion with gosling, mikkelsen, etc. when they're around? besides, i've plenty of friends through work and school who i met over the course of a few months, then separated due to distance, but we still keep in touch. weird that you'd just assume that the actors he's worked with have no regard for him anymore.

    "If everybody likes something it doesn't penetrate deeply" makes literally no sense. 2001, do the right thing, Goodfellas, Rashomon, Schindlers List and so on. there are so many films that are beloved and penetrate deep.

    • @blatherskite3009
      @blatherskite3009 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I understood it, he meant whether a film gets strong reactions from audiences, i.e. some love it, some hate it. If everyone "likes" it then it didn't push far enough. "Like" is a weak response; faint praise. He seems to want his films to get more polarised reactions from viewers. And, judging by the comments here, they do...
      At the time of writing, the next 2 comments below yours are "God, that Drive movie sucked so much" followed by someone else saying "Drive is one of the most amazing films I've seen in my life". Strong reactions, see? He'd be happy with that :)

      you think everybody in the world likes or would like 2001? Really?

    • @blatherskite3009
      @blatherskite3009 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marcogianesello6083 2001 is a fair example of what Refn was talking about. People tend to either think it's a majestic and deep philosophical work of art or it's the most boring thing they've ever seen. Hardly anyone sees 2001 and says "It was OK."

    • @marcogianesello6083
      @marcogianesello6083 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@blatherskite3009 i know what he means by that and he's right, the guy before argued that 2001 is so well regarded that it invalidates his point, but while cinephiles worship the film the average audience would hate it completely, thank god the passage of time makes reactions of that stature irrelevant, refn is working today so of course he's referring to the broader public reaction of his work

    The fact that Tarantino doesn’t like Drive makes me think less of his taste in film.

    • @KaizerMan
      @KaizerMan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve grown to love Tarantino less and less over the years. Reservoir Dogs to Kill Bill was his prime. Inglourious Basterds was great.
      Everything else was self indulgent immature fodder and hearing stories about his on set antics + stuff like him not liking Drive...it just really makes me less interested in what he says/does anymore
