Laurie I want to thank you for your videos. My husband and I are currently in Italy. As much as I have traveled in the past I never ever used a carry on suitcase much less for 10 days!! I took the challenge. I bought much of the items you have suggested in your videos it made packing less stressful. And I did it! I packed for 10days compression bags a must! I purchased the umbrella as well. Thank you so very much for all your videos and yes! You can travel with a carryon for 10 days. Amazing! Will never go back to full size luggage unless traveling for a long period of time.
Hi Laurie, you recommended some pajamas recently . They are wonderful, soft and easy to wear. Many (35) years ago I spent 6 years traveling for work. Not many women were on the road at the time. One year I was gone 49 weeks out of 52. I’m 79 now and don’t travel much anymore but I enjoy watching your advice. It’s excellent, right on the money. If you follow Laurie’s advice you will save aggravation. Also please remember to be kind, polite to people on the road. Those who provide services to you all day long don’t need anyone’s abuse.
When I travel to somewhere rainy, I spray my walking shoes I spray them with Kiwi boot protector. I love my Vessi waterproof boots. They introduced more styles of waterproof footwear. I also found Niki Polar Proof that will waterproof your polar fleece. This is magic, it waterproofed my fleece without affecting to texture. Thanks for all you do, I love your tips.
I traveled to Japan with the Quechua MH500 sneakers and they were perfect. Completely waterproof, comfortable, non-slip sole and after I changed the laces for a gray one, they became more neutral and good to combine with more clothes.
Love love my Teva Tirra sandals! They have 3 straps on top, so more secure. They were recommended to me by a foot/shoe specialist for travel in Europe on cobble stones. I used them and my feet did not hurt! I have been using them for years. Just get new colors. Amazon also has a knock off brand that is very similar and costs less, Viakix Acadia Hiking Sandal. They are waterproof also and I just wipe either of them down with an antibacterial wipe if they get a “foot” smell. Highly recommend both sandals.
If you haven’t tried Merry Boots they are amazing. They come in many colours and can be ordered on line. I wore them every day on my Iceland trip where the temperature went down to 0*
Hi Laurie, I love when you recommend shoes because I have a hard time with my feet. I bought the beige sandals with the little heel that you recommended and they are the most comfortable shoes I’ve worn in a long time. Thank you so much.😊
Thanks for all your hard work! I would recommend buying a pair of water resistant or waterproof running shoes. They're definitely meant to go the distance. You want to make sure they have Gore-Tex in them. I've bought two pairs and they're great for being in the wet weather. Once in a while if I step in a really bad puddle I have to change my socks but other than that, they work great! Well worth the money. Go to a store that sells running shoes.
Laurie - your videos are chock full of amazing tips! Thank you so much for them all. Do you know of a tiny umbrella that is auto open/close? It makes it much easier when dashing into a building, etc. my favorite umbrellas are clear - I seem to look up at the architecture when I travel and they help keep me from missing anything. On is a Swiss brand - we saw them everywhere in Italy among both Europeans and Americans.
I got a pair of full zipper rain pants from REI for the iceland trip and they worked perfectly. the only day it rained was the day we were driving back from Hofn to Hella, so were in the car instead of out in it.
Hi Laurie. Your videos are great. I retired earlier this year and spent months watching your videos (and others) in preparation for our river cruise in Sept. We got totally drenched (had to change ships after the Danube was closed). Your past travel tips are spot-on, and the tips in this video are equally great. I am curious about your Ecco shoes. I didn't find any issues with mine on the cobblestones or walks in Budapest, Vienna, Melk and several other Germany cities. Did you find Ecco's challenging only when wearing on wet cobblestone (that is, if walking on dry cobblestone, they work well for you)? Thank you.
Hi Sally-only in Regensberg when the stones were far away. I got rid of almost everything we packed but I cannot comment about that. So I bought new ones-they’re the same link but solid black with a silver thing on the tongue. Wow so comfortable. I think the base is somewhat wider or something. Seems like it has extra padding too. We were drenched in sept too!
I really enjoy your videos. I have taught overseas so I have to pack for a year--not exactly travel :). Perhaps you have done this video, but how about a video on documents and updated credit cards etc. that a person must have, or should have, before travel. Last year I discovered that my bank ATM card had expired ! I could not withdraw even a penny and my famly had to send money via Western Union. This year, I just discovered that one of my credit cards expired. During covid, I know people were careful to carry immunization documents, but other items are important too. What all do you make sure to travel with? Also, another reminder about keeping your passport safe is good.
Hmmm, I know that when getting gas overseas that sometimes it'll ask for a credit card pin which I need to learn how to access. But I guess just checking to make sure that stuff isn't expired is good. Thanks for these suggestions-I'll make one for 2025.
Hi Andrew, I do have a video called Packing Tips for Men. For rain gear my husband bought a jacket at H&M there in Regensburg! He loves Merrell shoes. I would recommend golf pants that are water repellent.
We were just in Rome and outside a lot for a few very rainy days. But it was warm and I have very hot hot flashes all over so I didn’t want to wear nonbreathable clothing. I got wet some but an umbrella and sandals that allowed my feet to dry when out of the wet were most comfortable. 😅The day I wore sneakers and my feet stayed wet was the worst. We traveled very light (3 week trip) so I couldn’t bring special stuff for rain. Any ideas?
Ooh wet feet are awful especially with socks! I would recommend waterproof sneakers like the On Cloud I showed. They are more like slip ons if you look at them-just a few laces. The black pants are super thin too and in my hot flashes they were fine. Here are the shoes: bit.ly/3Ufk832 Hope that helps.
Per your advice to "always check the weather before you start packing," I start packing months in advance and cannot find any useful weather forecasts.
We find the lightest, cheapest rain ponchos, carried in our tiniest back packs, work just fine in rain. WE ONLY need deal with rain occasionally since we’re just cheap tour travelers and there is always the bus If it rains hard OR there is always a coffee shop or site nearby that features a ROOF. THESE COMMENTS DO NOT APPLY TO OUTDOOR HIKERS. Obviously.
Thank you Laurie, great tips but I hate to say it what Americans wear does not make them stick out, it’s their attitude. As someone who is from York (UK) originally we always disliked the American tourists as they were rude, thought they owned the place and were downright dislikable, I realise not all Americans are like this as I have met a few who are lovely but that is the impression we have to American tourists.
Yes, not all are like that thank goodness. My hair makes me totally stick out. So I have stopped trying to blend in but to pack in only a carry-on suitcase while having enough essentials for that trip.

Oh I am thrilled for you! Takes strategy but worth it for waiting in lines at baggage etc.

try the premium shoe insert from SAS Shoes. Like walking on a cloud
I love Baleaf!! I wear their vest, hiking pants and joggers.

They make all the difference in the world for walking on dirt or wet ground.

Fun rain gear! Thanks Laurie!
Sadly, we had to pack it.

Yes the ones I showed are awesome!
Im sure you could sew on similar type straps to other jackets and use it like that backpack style when you get hot
Please try it for us.

Not yet! The umbrella I showed is easy to use as is the spf one. But with Amazon if you do not love it, you can return it for free too.

This is informative 👍🏼
Glad it was helpful! Rain in the forecast when trying to pack in only carryon luggage can be hard. Hope these tips help many travelers.

Hi can you see it in the pinned first comment of links? Here is what I think you’re talking about: amzn.to/4134iwS
Do you have a link for the water replent gloves? Im somehow missing that.
I do this every video-leave out something. So sorry. Here are the water-repellent gloves:

Hi 👋, Laurie! What recommendations do you have for us gentlemen? I’m Andrew.
Hi Andrew, I do have a video called Packing Tips for Men. For rain gear my husband bought a jacket at H&M there in Regensburg! He loves Merrell shoes. I would recommend golf pants that are water repellent.
Where did you get your loafers you had on with the blush color block sweater?
Hi they are super old from Nordstrom and sold out super fast back then. These are very similar (I put both for you to see): liketk.it/4ULuV
We were just in Rome and outside a lot for a few very rainy days. But it was warm and I have very hot hot flashes all over so I didn’t want to wear nonbreathable clothing. Laurie, Going on Alaskan Cruise june 25 3025..
what daypack would you recommend..
could be wearing rainjacket?
thx Rhonda
2025..sorry
Do you mean to tour through the day with? Do you want a crossbody bag or backpack?
Per your advice to "always check the weather before you start packing," I start packing months in advance and cannot find any useful weather forecasts.

Too bad the inseam for the Tall pants is only 31". Too short for me.
How important is it to pay attention to the color of your clothes in Japan?
I have seen all colors in their clothing.
I can hardly ever find narrow shows. I have a very narrow heel and will walk right out of most medium shoes. My arches don’t need support.
I think Munro at Nordstrom make narrow sizes.
Thank you Laurie, great tips but I hate to say it what Americans wear does not make them stick out, it’s their attitude. Excellent rainwear for travel. Information: you walk on concrete, not cement. Cement (a powder) comes in a bag; concrete comes in a truck!
Thanks for the tips!
Rain and creeping bugs on that river cruise? 😢

the pants you talk about are both water resistant, not waterproof. otherwise, thanks for the ideas.
I can guarantee that those black pants are waterproof lol. No pouring rain got through them.
