  • Eighty-five runners from fourteen countries and twenty American states ran 135 miles non-stop from Death Valley to Mt. Whitney on July 24-26, 2006 in the 29th 135-mile Kiehl's Badwater Ultramarathon. Placing first for the second year in a row was Scott Jurek, who was nearly beaten by a previously unknown rookie named Akos Konya, a citizen of Hungary who resides in Oceanside, CA.
The start line is at Badwater, Death Valley, which marks the lowest elevation in the Western Hemisphere at 280' (85m) below sea level. Following 135 miles of paved roads, the race finishes at Mt. Whitney Portal at 8360' (2533m). The Badwater course covers three mountain ranges for a total of 13,000' (3962m) of cumulative vertical ascent and 4,700' (1433m) of cumulative descent. The Portal is the trailhead to the Mt. Whitney summit, the highest point in the contiguous United States. Competitors travel through places or landmarks with names like Mushroom Rock, Furnace Creek, Salt Creek, Devil's Cornfield, Devil's Golf Course, Stovepipe Wells, Keeler and Lone Pine.
The race began with the traditional wave start, with 26 runners beginning at 6am, 28 at 8am, and 32 at 10am. This is done because of lack of parking at the start line and, even more so, to minimize congestion of runners, crew, and vehicles on the roadway in the National Park. Because hosting food and drink checkpoints along the side of the road in this forbidding environment is impossible, each entrant brings their own support vehicle and at least two support crew members to tend to all their needs.
Chris Kostman, Mike Schafer, Chris Ragsdale, Rachel Schmitt, Kai Norwood. www.badwater.com

Scott Jurik is the Tiger Woods of Ultra running, but his 24 hour Badwater personal best was crushed by Akos Konya who finished in a record breaking at 23 hours 41 minutes the very next year in 2007 Badwater.

I agree conclusions can't be drawn from Jurek alone as you would need a group even though runners have set world records eating pasteries but this[alkaline foods, water] is what will ultimatley prolong life and endurance over the long term. .

Besides his enormous ability as an endurance athlete and multi winner of Western States 100 and this tough(est) race, his diet proves that Alkaline foods such as sprouts and sprouted seeds, grains breads and oils are the best superfoods (all alkaline forming foods).

With that type of rational, football teams field better athletes than soccer teams do.Offensive linemen are super strong with incredible balance.Defensive linemen powerful and fast.Linebackers and runningbacks are the best "TEAM" athletes in the world. Many close to world record speeds and strength.Pound for pound in my humble opinion best athletes in the world.Soccer players only do one thing, they don't need other types of training to become stronger!!!

the word athlete comes from athletics which is all kinds of different sports, including running. So he´s an athlete in the correct sense of the word. You also need a lot more mental power to run 135 miles through the desert in 110° degrees temperature than to learn to lift some weights.

anyway, back to the topic of what constitutes an athlete: a decathlete is an athlete ten times over, right? three of the events in a decathlon are pure running (100m, 400m, 1500m), plus you cannot possibly excel at javelin, pole vault, hurdles, high jump, or long jump without being at least a well-practiced runner. so that leaves only two out of ten ATHLETIC events (the shot put and the discus) that don't absolutely REQUIRE the ATHLETE to run.

@hattube I don't think those conclusions can ben drawn. Scientifically speaking you need averages, but even then everyone has a different body.

for the sake of argument, i'll ignore how boring and stupid i think golf is.
first of all, i never said you HAVE to run to be an athlete. discus, shot, and hammer throwers(to name a few) can be incredible athletes without running or even jogging. now i've never talked to tiger, but i'm confident that his training regime consists of more than just practicing his swing. i'd be very surprised to discover that he does not do a whole lot of core strength, weight training, and at least some jogging.

i'm not sure what your point was; are you saying motocross is a sport because it's hard? how about coal mining or field plowing? guitar playing? i'm just kidding; i recognize motocross as a sport, but your post seems irrelevant and like it's only here to insult me and to brag that you're into soccer and motocross. good for you; i encourage you to seek fulfillment more through athletics and less through trolling and putting down strangers on the internets.
P.S. i'm taken, so keep dreaming.
