Altra Experience Wild Review

  • The Altra Experience Wild is a new model that differs from most of Altra's other shoes. It has a 4 mm drop and rocker geometry that should appeal to more runners. It feels lightweight yet cushioned enough for long runs, potentially ultra distances. The best way to describe this shoe is that it's fun to run in. The wider toe box is welcome, and the shoe feels secure from the mid-foot through the heel. It resembles the Brooks Cascadia, Nike Wildhorse, & Hoka Challenger. I'd even go as far as to say it can compete against the Hoka Speedgoat. Let me know what you think.

I’ve been running with this shoe for 2 months now and absolutely love it. It grew on me and are my current favorite.

That's great to hear! I still need to try the road version (Experience FWD). I'd love to try the FWD VIA, which is coming out in October. It's their max cushion with the same drop and geometry.

Great review and feedback! I also ran and reviewed the Experience Wild shoe on my channel. I liked the shoe (it's not a bad shoe) but it also wasn't an inspiring shoe. I think the tongue is too soft, making it hard(er) to get a proper lockdown fit without over tightening, and while the midsole did fine on the road and trails, I felt that it didn't encourage me and it didn't make the run memorable. For $145, I'd rather run in a few other brands/models (Puma Voyage 3, Topo Pursuit 2, Topo MTN Racer 3, Salomon Genesis, even the Mammut Saentis TR Low trail shoe). Also, the Experience Wild holds on to water, so hopefully you don't need to do any river/stream crossings. I will say that if you like the FWD Experience/Experience Flow, the Experience Wild will feel at home. Cheers!

I haven't tried any models you mentioned since we don't stock those in our stores. We do carry some Topo, and I'm hoping to review a model in the future. Your experience with the tongue is interesting, as I didn't have an issue. I was just testing out the new Mizuno Neo Vista, which has a knit upper and no padding on the tongue, and I had a little issue with it.

I've done probbaly 300km in the shoe since start of May, the last couple of weeks I've been in kyrgyzstan trail running mountains, gorges, canyons, flat road and for everyday use around town. It works so well I find never any blisters, foot pain it feels very reliable and it has been very reliable, but it doesn't excite me, I don't love the shoe but I'll probbaly buy another pair

It's rare when a shoe excites or motivates someone, but it's great when it does. What's better is a consistent shoe that makes running more enjoyable. It shouldn't be about the hype. It should be about comfort. Glad to hear it's working for you.

Thanks for the info, I used to love Pearl Izumi’s. They were what I started running trails/ultras in and I was disappointed when they stopped making trail shoes. I switched to Altra after that, so I’m excited to give these a try!

That's great to hear. I was wondering if anyone would remember the Pearl Izumi shoes. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Are they very warm ? Like you sweat a lot during running ?

I don't think they are warm. The upper seems consistent with other trail shoes. That being said, everyone is a little different. I think a darker color will feel warmer, especially if running in the sun. This color option, in open sun and shade, feels fine.

    so it feels really good?

They've felt really good for the short time I've been using them. I didn't find anything I didn't like about them. Since I have both models, I want to compare them to the Speedgoat and Challenger from Hoka. As I've stated, they feel good for me, you should try them on and judge for yourself.
