    Yikes! Speeding up the footage as you weave between the trucks, scooters, buses and the rest is giving me heart palpitations. Vinod may not like driving, but he looks super chill about it. Only one hand on the wheel. As you say, Johanna "Whooh!"

    • @JohannaNorth
      @JohannaNorth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I get that! Even watching it myself feels a little bit like being on a rollercoaster 😂 thankfully Vinod is indeed relaxed even though he has to be very alert every second of driving. Makes me feel more comfortable too. He’s the safest driver I have come across. Even though unfortunately driving with two hands on the wheel is not something that’s specifically stressed here in India 😁

      @@JohannaNorth when i was learning to drive,on day 1,my instructor told me to keep hands on 10-2 position,as time passed i always had good grip on steering,in last days , he told me to use single hand every here and there,so that you also become good at driving with single hand (especially ur not dominant hand)...this is because,say for some reason u find a situation where u cant use ur both hand or say u loose grip ,u should single handely steer the vehicle...so driving single hand here n there is not a bad thing,especially if it is a clear road

    Very lively interlude from your Kerala life. The drive is scary. You can see the tension in Vinod's actions, he doesn't like to drive in Motorways, that's why he is driving so fast; so that he can finish the drive sooner. Good idea. I like his comment about having to borrow God's (any) help to have a safe journey in India. That's why India got so many Gods and religions for the common people to rely on, because Indian/states Govts are all corrupted and common people won't get any justice from them. And no laws protects the so called common people. Anyways goodluck to you guys. Stay safe and enjoy this life as much as you can.

    • @JohannaNorth
      @JohannaNorth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes he always wants to get the drive finished as fast as possible 😁 unlike me, he doesn’t get to enjoy these little roadtrips and the scenery during driving. Our deal is that once we get to visit Finland, i do all the driving there

    Call it coincidence, but I'm a younger guy from Gorakhpur, U.P. & last week I got a decently specced SUV as I was enthusiastic about driving (especially, cross-country touring) and began learning to drive.
    I hated riding (bikes) in city traffic & after purchasing my car, I scoffed city commuters thinking on highways there won't be much congestion & traffic will cruise smoothly & I'll get to enjoy driving my new SUV.
    Took my car on the nearby 4 lane highway yesterday for the first time:
    1) First thing there was still substantial traffic rolling on it.
    2) Road rules & driving etiquettes though more respected than in the busy city traffic, yet still were broken frequently. Big wheels bullying (buses, trucks) is common. Might has the right.
    3) All the problems Vinod mentioned applied TO THE WORD here too...especially, the unnecessary foliage along the dividers which can sometimes hide a full grown livestock let alone children & adults. Also, like Vinod said, I have seen black buffaloes laying on the dark tarmac, casually regurgitating their dinner. Soon natural selection will lead to evolution of a new human species with night vision, in India.
    Needless to say, due to the higher speeds involved, it was a more of a stressful 😣 & tiring experience 🥱 (due to constant attention required), so much so that strangely I felt more relaxed back in the city traffic 😒. Now I have significantly lost my long nurtured enthusiasm for driving & just want to be chauffeured around. Yesterday I realised that the best place in a car ON INDIAN ROADS is in the rear seats.
    After yesterday's experience, I was getting PTSD seeing you doing higher speeds with a swollen tummy 😝 in that MARUTI SUZUKI (I don't know if you or Vinod knows how unsafe Maruti cars are. Barring one or two, all are literal tin cans (the entire portfolio has 0-2 stars in Global NCAP). I was scared even in my TATA Harrier, kudos to you for riding that Maruti.
    Lastly, after watching Vinod speak I was like: "Aaila, ye to bolta hai" 😁😆. I'm beginning to think he's somewhat like me....a rather calm, sensitive, intelligent 😉 & introvert guy who has his occasional fits of "extroversion" , but I could be wrong.

    • @JohannaNorth
      @JohannaNorth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Haha yes you do sound like Vinod a lot! :D
      I think he went through the same trajectory as a driving enthusiast. I'm sorry to hear that you got disillusioned with long distance driving. But I'm more surprised by people who still manage to enjoy this stressful activity.
      Also, when choosing a car Vinod's only criteria was a cheap tin box that could save him from rain. And the Maruti does serve the purpose :)

    I am horrified of thoughts of traveling in India, every time upon my visit. But the way those drivers manure in traffic is just mind blowing and some how they put you at ease as they always bring you home safe. I even enjoy riding on back of my nephews motorcycle😃
    When my daughter had rented a scooter for volunteering in Aurovill, India it was nerve racking for me and it kept breaking too!
    In East Africa they have boda taxi so basically you ride on back of young driver on tortures roads but always had so much fun.
    Thank you Johanna for taking us on travel with you:) I miss that chaos😉 you are in a good hands of your handsome driver 😉 enjoy the ride.😍😘🤗

    • @JohannaNorth
      @JohannaNorth  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's truly astonishing how well most of the drivers are able to improvise so well in the traffic! For me it's quite impossible, because I just can't wrap my head around not following traffic rules, haha :D So I just rather let the handsome driver take all the burden, though I have sometimes driven a scooter in the Indian traffic! I wouldn't drive one in Jaipur though.
      I'll do all the driving once we get to visit Finland :)

    In America too we don’t have shops and residences on the highway. The freeways cut through these areas but are separated by walls and have entrances and exits with overpasses or underpasses. Pedestrians are not allowed to be on the freeways.

    • @friendlyatheist7711

      India has two systems "highway" "expressway". They took highway which goes through cities and towns while expressway are just like your US system. Nothing can come on the expressway no shop no house. Food plazas every few hundred meters for that you have to cut from the expressway come to seperate lane downwards. And later as you get what you need you drive toward expressway.

    • @JohannaNorth

    Sorry Ma'am @Johanna but it is truth of our paralyzed road traffic system...Here more accidents happen due to others rash driving or saving others or animals...Driving licensing laws are also very poor.... Big vehicles drivers and rich gangs consider all road their own... Hope your trip would have been nice and safe...and by the way you have a wonderful and highly skilled Driver Husband Sir @Vinod...😉...Loving & caring...all these things put a bad impression of my lovely and diverse India😠 and as an Indian it gives us pain and sorrow...hope someday we'll also accommodate & enjoy abroad like Road rules, facilities and security...but in all of these ur Egg breaking technique was very special and unique...someday I'll try it.😂😂🌷🙏

      I think all countries have their good and bad qualities, I mean just look at the US! 😂 In Finland we have a lot of alcoholism and depression. In India it’s the roads and traffic among other things. It’s just a matter of trying to improve on those things that aren’t as good as they could reasonably be 😊
      Hoping to see the egg breaking method spreading! 😁

    Hi Jonanna! I am an Indian who was born and raised in Tamil Nadu. However, I have been living in the US for more than 40 years with a lot of driving experience including driving on black thin ice on the road. I used to think that if you knew how to drive in Boston and Los Angeles you could drive anywhere in the world. But this is not true. Every time I re-visited India I have never driven there like you. Sometimes I think that Indians (from various states) are not united in anything except on only one thing, i.e., first come first served type of driving rules on the road!

    • @JohannaNorth
      @JohannaNorth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I can definitely relate to this! Well ofc, the traffic isn’t as crowded in Finland as it is in India, but I know really well how to drive in any weather conditions and would have felt confident enough to try driving even in big European metros. But uffff, India is a whole different car game without any rules 😂😂😂
