I know these videos are quite old and you probably will never read this comment, but thanks so much for this series. Brought back my whole childhood from that first MechWarrior game (MW2 on PS1 lol) under the Christmas tree that got covered in melted peanut butter. I don't think my parents understood the lifelong mecha obsession they created in me that day.
Any chance you revive the series to cover the new entries like BattleTech (PC), MWO and MechWarrior 5? Could probably make a couple of videos just on the *mods* available.

I know this is just my nostalgia talking, but I totally remember playing this as a kid and absolutely loving it.
I also remember taking Arrow IV every mission I could and hating the underwater level. But it was also a time where we didn't really know much about any of the other Clan's cultures other than Wolf and Jade Falcon, so I do remember this game making me fall in love with the Ghost Bears. Even to this day, the Ghost Bears are my favorite clan.
    (IS for life!)

I always found it weird when the Kodiak swerved around randomly but then I thought maybe it was the small tactic of swerving your torso to distribute damage and make it hard for the enemy to hit a single segment of armor.
Also, I like the usage of "Ghost Bear 3" and its frantic tone to show how angry you were getting about some of the things.

This. It was never intended to be a "spin attack. When a Mad Dog/Vulture is unloading a full salvo of twin LRM 20s in your face, the last thing you want to do is stand there and take it straight to the face. Then again, most of the complaints about GBL in this video are based upon looking back two decades and complaining about small bits of functionality. In the mid to late 90's, these games quite an achievement.
Of course the underwater mission & fighting on the dropship were brutal. This game took those of us who looked at ourselves as seasoned 'Mech pilots and dialed up the difficulty to 11. There weren't as many missions, so the arduous campaign & unique settings gave the game replayability, which used to be important before DLC was a thing. To nit pick about a lack of rendered forest canopy is a frivolous thing.

When you're a kid, even cheat codes seem fair, balanced, and fun. I remember being very young and thinking a game without cheat codes wasn't very good. :)
I never use them anymore, but I still go for the cheeseball weapons like the Arrow IV, or a 6 stack of Inferno SRMs in Mercenaries.

I found GBL to be alright and enjoyable, only because I enjoyed the story progression a little more than the detached story in the original 31st Century. Yeah, the water mission is brutal and almost requires exploiting the AI to win. The final mission is also insanely difficult until you master jump jets and realize there is practically no heat problems. Even with 20 years of experience with this game, these missions still kick my butt from time to time. The bugs are also insane. But at the end of the day, I still love it, because it's hard to say no to more mech 2.

  • @spectre111
    @spectre111 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yeah Ghostbear was unpolished but it had some nice touches. Having multiple voices was nice, there was a bit ore variety in missions and the story was tighter. In the original you just seem to go from random planet to random planet, without the cinematics there is almost no coherence.

I actually beat the last mission without cheating today by taking out the turrets first. Used Stone Rhino with 2 Ultra AC 10s w/ 10 tons ammo each (which is max it lets you). Also loaded 5 medium lasers for good measure.
The secret is to immediately use the forward & up jump jets when you get control at the start of the mission and shoot the turret in front with a 1-2 mouse clicks (group fire) when you launch in the air. Then do a 180 turn with jump jets and take out the two behind you while still in the air. Usually the one on the wing stops firing at you at this point so you don't have to bother, I actually think my position in the air when i take the turrets out causes it to be hit by another turret and takes out it's guns?! Its happens like 50% of the time. After that you just fall back on your dropship and fly up to the hole do the rest of the mission by blowing the legs off the mechs. Real fast with this ammo load out. Only problem is the ammo limit. You have to get good hit % or you run out. I used all my ammo and took out the last leg of the last mech with lasers then blew reactor and dropped back down to my ship.
Actually pretty peaceful ending with no turrets bombarding you on your dropship lol.

Not that Zion aren't evil, they definitly used horrible tactics. But considering the actions that made them turn to violence, I almost can't blame them and I don't understand how the creators could paint them as the only villains.
Thankfully later Gundam series fixed that, like Unicorn.

7 years late to the party, but I think this review was a little harsh and way too opinionated. As someone who grew up with MW2 first and later discovered GBL almost nearly a decade later, I must say it was extremely fun and enjoyable. Alot of ways I did enjoy it over MW2 like the underwater mission (which I really wished was explored more imho). GBL did have alot of flaws but they can easily be overlooked. I'll go over a few timeframes in the video that are just purely objective opinions:
2:07 The new male "bitching betty" computer voice is not as bad as you are making it out to be. Sure it doesn't as rememberable or nostalgic as the original bitching betty voice, but it's not bad either. It should have been a togglable option imo which would have made way more sense.
2:34 Ironically I loved this mission because I love defensive based missions. This was very enjoyable to me since my favorite mech is the Rifleman IIC, which is in theory a walking anti air heavily armored turret mech. This gave the mech a little more purpose in GBL since that is what the mech was meant for.
2:53 You are bashing the forest level based on the limited polygonal geometry when MW2 is a game made from purely just that?
3:00 Never had a problem with the Executioner's loadout for the underwater level. The only real complaint that I personally had with this level was the extremely frustrating cave section where your mech can get heavily damaged and/or stuck on the cave geometry. That should have been playtested better and fixed initially. Other than that I loved this mission.
4:28 Uh, that's called torso twisting. It's a way that experienced pilots in the universe can evenly spread incoming damaged across their mechs. It's a common practice among mechwarriors that know how to engage other combatants in the universe. This is just downright ignorance from your behalf and proof that you have little knowledge of the franchise.
Some of the other things pointed out are valid criticisms (Stone Rhino's arms being too fragile was a big deal and a pretty bad glitch with the engine), but I don't really have to list anymore timeframes since after 4:28 it's useless nitpicking from a very one sided point of view. I get that GBL was nor will ever be as good as classic MW2, but if you can manage to overlook the flaws of the game it is still a very enjoyable experience.

Really nice to hear now that game basically is broken. Just bid MW2: Mercs and this GBL for the price being 25€ on local internet auction website. Guy was selling them separately so if someone bids more for GBL do you suggest to leave it be and just go for the Mercs?
Both were bigbox versions in CiB condition.
I got the ATI Rage edition of the MW2 and I'd like to get my hands on to as many MW2 copies/expansions I can but is GBL worth getting like even for that price?

Still incredibly nostalgic for this one; brings back my childhood. Though I do remember thinking, in anticipation of this review,
"Man, I loved GBL, the locations were more interesting, plus THE ARROW. Okay, the underwater level was sadistic, but still, the arrow made up for it. The arrow was the best thing ever. It made the game easy! if you could target a guy, him and his entire lance was dead, so it required no effort... no strategy and uh ... wait, doesn't that make it a *bad addition?*"

When you crank up the details etc in options menu nothing actually improves. The only good about it came over from the original Mech 2 31st. I liked the different mechs at first until I realized they sucked. The water level is just stupid. It's cool in concept and i admire the expansion for having really different environments. But they are not backed up by the atmosphere of Mech 2 31st's worlds.

Personally, I don't get why people act like liking Gundam Wing is a bad thing. I personally preferred the plot of that anime over the main Gundam Universe, if only because I dislike how Zion is painted as unadultered evil when they are "freedom fighters" against an arguably dictatorial government that forced their ancestors into space, so that the upper 2 percent could comfortably live on earth, and then killed Zion's originally peaceful leader to prevent uprisings against the earth government.

your complaint on the "Kodiak spin attack" *[1] and your complaint on the Stone Rihno *[2] I do not think you know as much about battletech as you think. Including the HPG part, which can come in many ways and the Satellite ones are better at longer distances while the smaller ones is a shorter distance one. Images from cannonical books and manuals and readouts show the HPG to have a satellite dish appearance as seen here www.sarna.net/wiki/File:HPG.jpg
I think your knowledge of Battletech is quite small to mine and your judgement are just well. Assumptions based on the other BS in MW2:CGBL. Like the water levels and such. I really wanted to get CGBL but it seems like it's not worth it... Even though it's the only game to feature under water combat (besides MW: LL which is fan made)... ish.
I wish someone makes a remake or mods it. ya know. Modern modders can easily fix the issues in CGBL
*[1]: (which is actually the Kodiak using it's superior agility to "Armour roll" the incoming damage to disperse it across the mech.)
[2](it was one of the worst mechs the clan had, by this time period it was a secondary line mechs. It was based from an already dead mech that couldn't pass into service, the "Omega", it was a 150 ton SLDF mech with 3 guass rifles and 2 LBX 10's, It had so many problems like actuators failing and stuff and it was very slow that even an urban mech will out run it. The behemoth/ stone rhino was also a BATTLEmech, not an OMNImech, so any clan mech can replicate it's build if it was an omni mech, only difference is it's "quirks" which no MW game so far did besides the newer one MW: O)

Now this argument might be valid if the setting was based on the same planet. This isn't the case though, it's a whole galaxy, and Clan Ghost Bear controlled a wide variety of planets, from icy snowglobes to desert wastelands. I think the problem with the game is that the ice planets all feel awful. I remember playing them and they're seriously a strain on the eyes after a while, with your entire screen being nothing but bluish white.
