Hi Lewis, in the early 70's I was an engineer for Shell Tankers, only got as far as Stanlow on 12,000ton tanker. There was a ferry across the canal to the ship discharge berth on the island from the Stanlow side of the canal. If the small ferry was not on your side of the canal you had to ring a large bell to call it over to pick you up. Those were the days haha. Many thanks for another very interesting video.
Absolutely brilliant as usual Lewis, this video taps into my great passions radio, canals and history. As a very old Irish person we as children used to sing ‘the big ship sails through the illy alley oh’ and I only found out recently from a local folk singer that this was about the Manchester ship canal, we Irish and particular us from Dublin had geat affinity with Manchester so, many memories and thoughts. Thank you 👏👏
The ship traffic on the MSC is a mere shadow of its former self, most vessels being quite small. The docks are almost all closed now, although there is a proposal by the Peel Group to open a container terminal called Port Salford. Peel Group were the original developers of the Trafford Centre, by the way. So far little seems to have happened. The site is at Barton Moss, south of the aerodrome, but a proposed later phase would extend the terminal to butt up against the M62, and almost surround the aerodrome. The aerodrome is a grass field for light aircraft, and was originally the pre-war Manchester Airport !
Loved that video Lewis. The pace of life is so peaceful and tranquil on the canal. The ship looks really incongruous tied up beside a road with a row of houses beyond it. I have the marine channels on my baofeng radio and like to listen to Belfast vts on marine channel 12 when I get the chance to travel down to Belfast Lough which is my nearest large port. Great video Lewis. I'm in the Great Lakes region of the US and occasionally listen to the lake freighters coming into and out of port and interacting with the drawbridge controllers, along with river barges and their tugs. But I especially enjoy USCG comms from the nearby coast guard stations. Between marine VHF, air band, and our P25 network I can pretty much listen to everything they've got going on, so there's never a dull moment.
Lots of Marine comms here on Halifax Harbour. Cruise ships Royal Canadian Navy and Various container ships. Always something to listen to! Thanks for entertaining video!
We had something similar in California with inland deep water ports in both Stockton and Sacramento. It was always odd to look up from a farm field 50 km inland and behind the coastal mountain ranges to see a large freighter moving along. The Port of Sacramento was 150 km from the Golden Gate Bridge by waterway, in the middle of a large agricultural region. We had to monitor marine channels 9, 12, 13,and 14 to keep up with all the traffic and bridges. I remember watching the single barge lock in Sacramento operate in the 1980s but it might have been one of final times it did. Great job on the music by the way.
Swami - that is an interesting name. In South Indian languages this is a term of respect. Like Sir or Respected Elder or Guru. Happy to see and hear about a Swami in the UK.😊
Fascinating to see an inland waterway in the UK still being used for its intended purpose and not just tourism (which has its place, of course). I spent a weekend in Salford last year, and was intrigued to see just how extensive the docks there are, even to this day. Amazing when you consider that Manchester is quite far inland (in GB terms).
Cool video. I knew rail fanning was a big thing but I never thought about chasing ships. Not too far from where I used to live there is a canal that connects the Delaware River to the Chesapeake Bay and there is frequent barge traffic there, and a bike path that runs alongside the canal. There is also a gigantic railroad lift bridge over it, which only closes for trains infrequently, but it's amazing to see up close when it does. Might be interesting to get a radio and check that out.

Gooday Lewis, A while back I was flying a float plane in the north of Canada from a lodge to outposts , little shacks on beautiful selcluded on their own little islands on very private lakes with incredible fishing. On top of each shack was a long pole and on top a Marine Band radio antenna .These were used for coms back to the lodge. The operator did not have a clue about radios, they purchased the cheapest and used decades old coax. But you could that unusual chatter on a marine band channel a long way from the conventional marine channels.
We have a canal nearby here too (Amsterdam-Rijn-kanaal). The maritime radio is about the last service still using NBFM. Still it is not easy to receive... the locks and canal traffic control here use 3-el yagis or 2 phased dipoles in front of a grid reflector, pointed along the canal and at less than 10m elevation, so at a random location near the canal the signal is often quite weak. Of course near to a lock it can be easily received. I have sometimes biked along the canal and listened on a Baofeng.
I spent a week camping by the Rhine this summer, one thing i wasn't expecting was the sheer scale (in terms of the number and size of the ships) of active cargo shipping that still happens on it even 100s of miles inland. The ship canal must be the only place in the UK that comes even remotely close to it!
Nice coverage. I can sometimes pick up comms from the ship canal here in Bolton. I've never jumped in the car and gone ship chasing, but I'm tempted to do that now.
Some realy nice video😂😂😂😃. Brings back many memories of my more youthful days living in Eccles. Particulary Barton swing bridge which I traveled daily to MetroVic (AEI) Trafford Park. In 1964 I traversed the canal from Liverpool to Salford I still have a photo record of the trip digitised. The canal looks a lot cleaner than in 64, the canal had a different acrid smell to every mile and there was folk law stories of the water being able to dissolve a nylon stocking. Still it was a great and interesting day out and the weather was kind. Back then at certain points on the Warrington road you can see a ship sailing mysteriously through a wheat field. I believe the same trips are still organised on a seasonal basis.
Other channels are also used. Pilots, tugs, port and such, That ship carried a good number of antennas including HF, which is still used, mostly as backup on the open ocean and third world.

As I type this I am watching "Swami" on MarineTraffic approaching Limerick, clicking on the past track I can see her voyage from Manchester, across the Irish Sea and around the bottom of Ireland. Pretty cool. I receive and upload AIS info to MarineTraffic, it's a fantastic service.
I live in the San Joaquin Valley of California in the United States . Stockton is a town in the middle of California and they are famous for their Commercial Port and ocean vessels it services. Yet the Pacific Ocean Ocean is many hours away.
really respect the captains of these massive ships - used to enjoy watching the big ships sailing down the Rhine in .NL - more amusing was the Germany private boat/yacht owners at Leischendam who always failed so badly at navigating the lock there :) I live near the sea in South West England these days - will have to take a radio down to the coast and see what I can hear - nothing like the big ships from Hoek van Holland or Amsterdam, but still some nice traffic coming in out to France.
Might be worth mentioning, Channels in the USA are Different to a lot of other places around the World on VHF Marine Radio's, that's why VHF Marine Radio's have a setting USA or International.
Another excellent one from you Lewis. Great camera work. I consider myself to be very lucky being a coastie. VHF Marine is the only analogue service of any merit worth listening to. I've not heard much OBS UHF recently. Maybe I am not looking in the right places.
Can you do more videos about the Mersea and Manchester ship canal, absolutely fantastic viewing along with the great ambient dub music! When I was a student living in Didsbury, the Mersea practically ran past our back garden. Didn't get the opportunity to see ships on the canal, so this video was fascinating 😊
Love these vids. Programmed some marine frequencies on my UV5R. But with some being simplex and others duplex it gets really messy like you said in another video. Tempted to get a marine handheld.
You must have a big telephoto lens to shoot these images! The compression in the distance is really serious! As a professional photographer I must compliment you with you compositions, really stunning at times!

Lovely bit of video sir, I pass the ship canal on twice daily bases from Irlam down to Warrington, and never seen any vessels on the water, are they a rear event, and what do these ships carry?.
If you know the right frequency you can also listen to the Coastguard and RNLI Emergency channel, which is hidden on a marine VHF radio but is not encrypted. Because of this they have to talk in quite generic terms and wont talk in detail about the casualty often you will hear them asking to back-fall onto mobile phone calls which often will have poor signal under the cliffs. This to me all seems horribly inefficient and most likely they need an encrypted channel. Maybe even the use of the ESN but the suitability of that to be extended to a marine environment is very unlikely given its current situation.

Yes, on my Icom, I had to choose the channels code prior to listening. Our code in 🇬🇧 GB gives us M1 and M2 marina channels.

Don't know the canal was still in use by these vessels though was was only in use by the Manchester Ship Canal tour boat.

Google marine frequencies, it’s not hard. Also, I gave the ship canal frequency in the video!
Don't forget mostbig ships have the 457 467 mhz on board comms, some are analogue some dmr and large port you should get some activity
