Coteries of New York, IMO, was the best onboarding media for VtM. It provides a good introduction without being too heavy-handed with the exposition.
Totally agree. That and Night Road was great for explaining things. Also the first and third stories of Walk Among Us were great
I’ve only played cotories and shadows, but shakes completely overshadowed cotories. It also kept the news to the lore friendly introductions.
Coteries character is good really! All of them well writing expect our bot, sorry I mean ••playable characters•• which personally I seen them simply empty and lifeless, and more importantly weak willed and dumb. If there’s only two true choices of that game that player can actually make it for themselves is either die . Or thanks their coteries or That rude Nosferatu. That’s it. I low how we see the true mastermind behind the plot as simply creepy . For fun.

Started there too, but my favorite hobby of the past few years of watching new VTM fans playing Bloodlines for the first time taught me that for them, it can be a great second step, but not necessarily the first (if you're a ~20 year old trying to get into the new hobby by playing an older game you need to patch and get through many hoops with, it can be a bit discouraging). Gotta ease the way in, hence the idea for these videos, too. Hoping for second game to be a great first step for both older and brand new players, though!
@@Outstarwalker Agreed. Bloodlines was a great introduction to this universe 10-20 years ago, but a young person who's used to more modern games might find it hard to engage with something so dated. It's still my favorite though.
@@Outstarwalker Quite a few older games can need patching to get to work. So if they are discouraged with Bloodlines on that level, then they will be discouraged with a lot of older games.
Not to mention the fact that all of the games they love to play now will, at some point, need to have patches and workarounds to be playable in the future. This is the simple reality of gaming.
@@Outstarwalker As for second game to be an introduction, that would likely have to be Swan Song at this point. It's the only game like Bloodlines that is on the path of release.
So if you want it to be a great introduction to V5 and that era, it has to be very good off of the bat. Because if it is buggy, like Cyberpunk 2077 is, then you will have a problem selling it as an introduction to newcomers.
Also, making it Epic Stores exclusive for a year means that the rest of us have a year to sit back, and see what the reviews are, and even watch gameplay on Twitch and the like. Which is what I like about this Epic Exclusive release model. With Earthbound, I had a year to watch others play, and decide if I wanted to buy it or not.
Just putting thoughts out for consideration.
I'd also suggest the comic book Vampire the Masquerade: Winters teeth which has two volumes so far. They're pretty good and capture the Vampire atmosphere well.

@@HandofOmega it's by Vault comics. Also if you read/enjoy Winter's Teeth there is also a 3 issue Vampire/werewolf series called World of Darkness Crimson Thaw that follows up on Winter's Teeth.
Cannot recommend Night Road enough if you want to sink your teeth into this world (pun intended). It gives an excellent sense of what it's like to move in this world, including the risks. Parliament Of Knives, also from Choice of Games, is an excellent followup.
And most importantly, remember the Golden Rule, do what is fun, and it’s better to do some nonsense game where everyone is some clan hybrid thing, than not play at all.
Oh, and the answer to the question of, “do I need to know all the lore of the world” is a solid, “no”. It’s better to start playing, and if you need to know more learn it along the way than to simply never play because you don’t feel prepared. But you should, defiantly at least read the section on your clan, it’l help you get a feel for your character, after all, why would a clan embrace outside their archetypes? (The answer is your sire needed someone who doesn’t fit their clan so go ahead and buck stereotypes)

Paradox took the golden rule to the heart, that they're doing exactly that with the 5th Edition books.

Bending stereotypes is cool, but I don't know how much times i heard idiot stuff like "Rockstar Nosferatu who wants to get famous", "ignorant tremere", "vampire romance" or "good hearted vampire".
Don't get me wrong, exceptions are cool, but pourpusly trying to bend clan stereotypes just for the sake of doing it, seems like beeing a special snowflake to me. What's the point of playing a mobster lone wolf nosferatu killer when at least 4 other clans fit that archetype better?
Ugly, violent non charismatic Toreador? why? why?! play a damn brujah or gangrel instead ffs.
Having the need to completely break character stereotypes seems like a very cheap way of trying to make a character interesting (yeah, trying, that doesn't work most of the times)

You just gave me a narrative reason for that to happen.
I agree with that, you can justify everything and it's fine.
My point was: it is boring to see characters who are totally different from their clan archetype because, more often than not, people playing that way are trying hard to be special.
Take Brujahs, you can make them social, intellectuals, brutes and every combination of those three aspects (Black block, university professor, Antifa, Human right activist, philosopher, rockstar, mobster, hacktivist, phreaker, social engineer, ex special force soldier).
There are so many interpretations to those three themes that you can write an only brujah campaign!
Now, imagine a player who comes at the table and says "I wanna play a brujah who likes animals the most and is not interested in violence, people and studying. Oh yeah, he's also good hearted and not prone to anger in any way".
That's fine as long as (as you said) the player is fine with his character being thrown inside-out to eventually embrace one of his clan themes.
My point is, it's a very bad idea to chose a clan that deals with themes you don't want to explore in any way and I would not recommend that to any player

I’m a Demon Hunter X fan. Especially the Shih. Those hunters are undersold glass cannons! At character creation, if you stack your dots right and pick the Thousand Star Shower ability, you can pull off a move that lets you do, at most, 72 AGGRAVATED damage in 2 actions! There’s a reason why the Keui Jin start to piss themselves if three or more Shih are in one town working together.
If you manage to boost your Shih’s Qao of the Mo Kung and Qao of the Shi up to 5 dots each, then you can pull off a supreme glass cannon combo, at the cost of your character dying at the end of combat from exhaustion, in which you can deal out a game-breaking (maximum potential) 120 Aggravated damage PER ROUND! If you use Thousand Star Shower in one of those rounds, then you could potentially dish out a maximum of 220 Agg in a single round!

C’Mon. I know Outstar would’ve recommended we install _Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines_ and install the latest version of unofficial patch which the Steam page links us to. But Paradox wants to promote their new stuff and seems to be embarrassed by how they’re handling Bloodlines 2.

If you hate the formating of V5 book, don't worry. You are not alone.
But If I have one book I would recommend to anyone who would ask about VTM, it would be VTM 20th Edition. Go ahead and try it.

Unless they change the story and they adapt it to their "Paradox edition",
they probably won't do that, since Paradox are invested on their own "true" edition mainly.
Big majority of products they made and including this video are made to promote that 5th Edition.
A lot of rights ownership issues to handle for that to ever happen, but never say never!
Do a coteries of New York remake and make it like swansong and then shadows of New York something about playing as a newly made kindred sounds very appealing. Even though I will be buying swansong and playing it

If you are really feeling overwhelmed you could try to do a game focused on Mortals and just follow that until you really understand the rules system.
AKA play Out For Blood from Choice Of Games.
I know she have to advertise the new visual novels, books, virtual novels BUT, missing Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines from this little list was a mistake. Probably the best thing in the Vampire stuff, right after the TTRPG of course.
Honestly, i still think the best way to enter the world of darkness is the original Vampire Bloodlines. (I know, it isnt V5, but honestly, im not that of a fan of V5 and prefer V3/V20.
What about 5e don't you like? Based on what I have seen in LA by night the only REAL change is how blood and hunger work and theme wise I think it works well.
@@videogenics86 v5 is like requim in a sheepscoat. They have bloodpotency, the disciplines and clans are weakened down. It has its good things, i finished the london has fallen campeign recently , and i really love my character. But i think this also woul have worked in v3/v20
@videogenics86 Late / long reply here…but wanted to clarify just a few differences between V20, V5, and LA by Night!
LA by Night clearly has A Lot of personalization going on! Nowhere is this more evident than the fact that the Tremere characters, such as Eva and the Sisters, still having access to Thaumaturgy! In actually, all disciplines dealing with Blood Magic have been severely nerfed into the Much Weaker ‘Blood Sorcery’ which Cherry picks from Path of Blood and the Assamites former ‘Quietus’ discipline.
These were not the only abilities to be lost or combined either. The Setites (Ministry) had Serpentis taken away with the powers hidden behind combos of other disciplines. Malkavian’s lost Dementation. Lasombra and all Necromancy users had their disciplines combined into ‘Oblivion’. Plus said Necromancy users have mysteriously set aside age-old revenge vendetta’s against the Giovanni for overthrowing Clan Cappadocian and merged into the Clan Hecata. Including the Nagaraja…whose history is more Tremere-like than anything else (mortal mages become vampire). They have zero Cappadocian ties, but because of the Necromancy discipline they’ve been lumped in with Hecata for simplicity’s sake…😒
Also, you no longer get freebie points in character creation. An age higher than 15 can grant you 15 experience points, but otherwise you have just 7 to spend on backgrounds and advantages. So, making a successful character like Victor with all his Resources, Contacts, Retainers, Fame, etc…best case scenario you spend all your 7 advantage points on those + all you 15 experience…but that only grants 5 more dots in advantages since they cost 3exp per dot. Pretty sure Jason Carl either gave our fav Venture some leeway during creation or the characters were made with V20 in mind and the game converted to V5 rules as it progressed/ got picked up by WOD’s TH-cam…cause I need to begin with a Ancillae (35exp points +2 added advantage points) to make anything close to Victor and that’s assuming you’re willing to forgo any + all Merit advantages. The catch? My character’s embrace is then set between 1780-1940, and generation is 10th or 11th. Much older than Victor given he still has 2 living children…😓
Plus you are forced to take 2 additional flaws on top of the 2 you’re already required to have. Flaws in V20 came with the upside of granting up to 7 added freebie points to spend on character customization. Here, no such luck.
V5 very much wants you to start out newly embraced, like Annabelle, or as a baby Thin-Blood. In V20 you were granted a guaranteed 5 Background points, plus 15 freebie points, which had special purchasing regulations (Backgrounds = 1 point, Attributes = 5, Disciplines = 7, etc) and you’d sometimes be awarded additional points with ST permission. Like if you were running an Elder Game, which V5 has no options for.
So yeah…just a few differences that makes me sus about LA by Nights intended origins / house rulings. Feels like, best case scenario, it’s a mix of V20 + V5. Which sounds like an, admittedly, pretty cool concept! Just wish they’d own up to that and let us know exactly what home-brew they came up with so I can run my own!
Clearly access to V20 disciples was put into place but there must’ve been, at minimum, added exp awarded to at least Victor if not other coterie members as well.
Where to start? V20th edition hands down, V5 if you want a watered down version of the WoD.

If you like that and in case you didn't, you should read the introductory story in the VTM Revised Edition, that's what inspired the tutorial part in VTMB.
Unfortunately, it uses Revised's rules so it's the best introduction to the setting but not to V5.
There are also a couple of very good (imho) playlists of VtM V5 on the Roll4it channel...

You have plenty of them personally I simply recommended you to go to the word of darkness discord, there’s channel of server and their world setting and their game system as well , best one so far was “Bloody London!!!”” Discord which took system of v20.. apologies but I haven’t being in other server much . Bloodlines 2 has apparently been handed over to a new (as yet unknown) developer to complete and/or change the game. This is why there's no release date yet. Let's hope this changes soon.
@@paulappleton9666 I'm aware of this. I'm also aware it's ove 2 years since the game was supposed to be released. While I'm thankful for the change in direction, because let's be honest, it wasn't looking very good previously, I still feel we're owed some sort of update by this point.
